Khabib Nurmagomedov hints at Jack Della Maddalena vs Islam Makhachev superfight for Madison Square Garden

Yahoo3 days ago
Jack Della Maddalena appears to have his first title defence already in the works, with the Australian on a collision course with former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.
The 28-year-old captured welterweight gold at UFC 315, stunning fans with his victory over Belal Muhammad. Now, a monumental title fight awaits at Madison Square Garden.

Makhachev is expected to move up a division for this bout after vacating his lightweight belt earlier this year.
His coach and mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov hinted at the matchup during a recent fan question-and-answer appearance in New York.
"This is his deal with the UFC," Nurmagomedov said.
"I don't deal with the UFC. This is his problem, but we have [a] deal with them where he's gonna fight at Madison Square Garden and they said yes."
The UFC is yet to officially confirm the blockbuster showdown, but looking at their schedule in years past, a return to the Garden seems likely to go down in November.
For Della Maddalena, the challenge is enormous. Makhachev enters the bout with the momentum of four consecutive title defences - two of those over Della Maddalena's countryman Alex Volkanovski.
The idea of the Russian stepping up in weight class adds intrigue, presenting questions over whether or not he can implement his dominant wrestling game against a bigger opponent.
If finalised, the event would put both men in the frame for fighter of the year discussions, a welcome achievement to their growing legacies.

Almost getting no-hit at home, lifeless Mets are swept by Guardians and booed by fans

NEW YORK — The boos began to cascade down from the peaks of Citi Field in the bottom of the sixth inning and continued with each passing Mets at-bat. None of the team's players could put an end to it through the eighth inning. Cleveland Guardians right-handed starting pitcher Gavin Williams was tormenting the home side and their fans. The Mets were no-hit for 25 outs against the Guardians before Juan Soto provided an abrupt jolt with a ninth-inning solo shot. Yet it was another lifeless performance for the Mets, who dropped a 4-1 result in front of 40,072 fans Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field. The loss was the Mets' fourth straight and eighth in their last nine games as they slipped to 63-52 on the season. They went without a hit for 15 innings between Tuesday and Wednesday's losses after they were held in check after the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 3-2 loss after striking twice in the opening two innings. The only baserunners for the Mets through the opening eight innings Wednesday were Brandon Nimmo, who walked in the second and third innings, and Cedric Mullins, who also walked in the bottom of the second. Soto saved this version of the Mets from a becoming a piece of unfortunate history. The Mets had been held without a hit five times in their history, with the last no-hitter coming on Oct. 3, 2015, when then-Nationals starter Max Scherzer struck out 17 batters with Yunel Escobar reaching on an error. They had a close call last season when J.D. Martinez broke up a Braves no-hit attempt with a two-out, opposite-field home run with two outs in the ninth inning on May 11, 2024. The only solace for the Mets came away from their home field, where the Phillies were taken down by the Orioles in Philadelphia to keep the margin at 2.5 games between the National League East foes. David Peterson had been the Mets' most successful stopper throughout the season but would have needed to provide a near-perfect performance to lift up his side on Wednesday afternoon. Instead, he allowed more than two runs for the first time since June 27 when he gave up a second-inning solo shot to David Fry and a two-run shot to Angel Martinez in the top of the third. The Guardians tacked on one more run off the Mets left-hander on an RBI triple by Gabriel Arias in the top of the sixth inning. Juan Soto spoils Gavin Williams' no-hit bid with 9th-inning home run, but Guardians hold on to top Mets

MLB is still seeking its first no-hitter of the 2025 season. Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams threw 8 1/3 no-hit innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday and had the green light to go all the way despite having the highest pitch count of the MLB season. But Juan Soto spoiled the party. The Mets slugger hit a deep fly ball to center field on a 1-0 fastball that Williams left over the plate. Centerfielder Angel Martinez gave chase and made a play on the ball at the wall. But the ball snuck over his glove and just over the wall for a home run before bouncing back into the field of play. The home run was Soto's 26th of the season and stood as New York's only run of the day as Cleveland held on for a 4-1 victory. MLB is still seeking its first solo no-hitter since Blake Snell no-hit the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 2, 2024 while pitching for the San Francisco Giants. Three Chicago Cubs pitchers combined to no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 4 of last season. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Williams finished the eighth inning having already thrown a career-high 111 pitches. But Guardians manager Stephen Vogt didn't hesitate to send him back out for the ninth to face the top of the Mets order. Vogt struck out Francisco Lindor to lead off the inning before Soto's home run ended the bid. Vogt didn't get the last out, but he finished the game with the win, having thrown 8 2/3 innings with six strikeouts, four walks issued and the single hit allowed to Soto. He threw 126 pitches. The effort lowered Williams' ERA to 3.17 for the season, which would stand as the best of his three-season MLB career. The Guardians are still seeking their first no-hitter since Len Barker threw a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays in 1981.
