India expands consular services with 8 new centres in US starting August 1
In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Washington, DC shared a video message by Ambassador Vinay Kwatra.
'Announcing major expansion of our Consular Services in the USA beginning August 01, 2025. Here is a message from Ambassador Vinay Kwatra about this expansion and the positive changes it would bring to our service delivery.'
Ambassador Kwatra said in his statement that the new Indian Consular Application Centres would be in Boston, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Addison, Orlando, Raleigh, and San Jose.
"In addition, we would also be opening another Indian Consular Application Centre in Los Angeles very soon. With the opening of these new Indian Consular Application Centres, our presence to provide extensive consular services and related delivery capabilities would increase and expand significantly. Besides, it would also make the delivery of these consular services faster and more accessible to our vibrant Indian diaspora."
The Ambassador said that starting August 1, all the Indian consular application centres would also remain open on Saturdays. He noted that this would help significantly enhance not just the availability of various consular services, but also their accessibility to the Indian diaspora.
The Ambassador also mentioned the streamlining of various miscellaneous consular services, which would be made available through the Indian Consular Application Centres, and a few of the important services would, however, continue to be dispersed and made available from the embassy premises.
"We firmly believe that people-to-people ties are at the heart of the India-US partnership. With the opening of two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles, which the Prime Minister of India had announced a few months ago, we would be able to further strengthen not just a relationship between our two countries, but also our people-to-people ties, particularly in the areas of Boston and Los Angeles".
Ambassador Kwatra requested the members of the Indian diaspora to keep visiting the website of the Indian Embassy, where detailed information about the opening of these Indian Consular Application Centres and the availability of various miscellaneous Consular services would be made available more regularly.
As per the Ministry of External Affairs, about 5.4 million Indian origin people (per MEA data; includes 2.07 million NRIs) reside in the US. Persons of Indian origin constitute the third-largest Asian ethnic group in the US. The Indian diaspora has been a catalyst in cementing closer ties between India and the US.
Earlier this year, in January, the United States held a dedication ceremony for its new Consulate in Bengaluru, which made it the fifth US consulate in India.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Ashok Kumar Mittal on Wednesday strongly criticised United States President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% additional tariff on Indian products, calling it "illogical" and accusing Washington, DC, of applying "double standards" in its trade policies. Aam Aadmi Party MP Ashok Kumar Mittal also suggested that the current situation could also open up new avenues for the Indian economy.(File/Sansad TV) Mittal defended India's purchase of oil from Russia and questioned the legitimacy of US criticism. Mittal said, "Yes, we are purchasing oil from Russia. Who is he to stop us? He himself is purchasing uranium, certain critical metals from Russia. His allies, European countries, are purchasing oil from Russia. China is purchasing oil from can't have double standards, double policies. He will have to withdraw his illogical orders, illogical tariffs." Mittal asserted that Indian industry is "competent enough" and will find "alternative ways to sell the products." He said, "The US has imposed a 50% total tariff on Indian products. Of course, this will hurt the Indian industry in the short term. But our entrepreneurs, our businessmen, our industrialists are competent enough, strong enough. They will find alternative ways to sell the products." He suggested that the current situation could also open up new avenues for the Indian economy. "We may increase consumption in India, we are 1.4 billion populations and we can find some more markets. Rather, it may give us opportunities. Indian economy is growing 6 to 8 % per year, and its effect on GDP will be maximum 0.2, meaning nothing as per our growth, and we will easily absorb this deficiency in our growth and find other ways." His reaction comes after, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United the order, the total tariff on Indian goods will be 50 per cent. While the initial duty becomes effective on August 7, the additional levy will come into effect after 21 days and will be imposed on all Indian goods imported into the US, except for goods already in transit or those meeting specific exemptions. The Executive Order also allows for modifications based on changing circumstances, including potential retaliation by other countries or steps taken by Russia or India to address the national emergency." Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 per cent," the order stated. India has termed the United States' move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable." Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi will take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests." In an official statement, the MEA said, "The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India." "It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," the statement added. We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests," the MEA stressed. (ANI)

DDA again plans demolition drive at Majnu Ka Tilla
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is working on a plan to undertake a demolition drive at Majnu Ka Tilla on the Yamuna floodplains, home to hundreds of Pakistani Hindu refugees. This was after a similar drive – slated for July 15 and 16 – was deferred due to the police citing inability to depute personnel as the Kanwar Yatra was in progress. In a status report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday, the DDA said the demolition drive is being planned again. 'The concerned officials and competent authority are in the process of re-planning and rescheduling the demolition programme, in coordination with Delhi Police and/or any other stakeholders, so as to ensure compliance with the orders of this hon'ble Tribunal and to facilitate ecological restoration of the Yamuna floodplains,' the report noted. The drive was delayed after the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) wrote to the DDA on July 14 stating that due to the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, 'adequate police protection for the demolition drive could not be provided on the scheduled dates'. The letter recommended a joint survey and a meeting with stakeholders to assess the situation before proceeding with the drive. After the conclusion of the Kanwar Yatra on July 23, the DDA had asked the police to propose a suitable date and time for a joint site inspection. '…the DDA proposes to organise a joint site inspection… to assess the ground situation and plan the demolition operation in a structured, coordinated, and secure manner,' it wrote. The demolition drive comes on the heels of multiple court orders directing the removal of encroachments from the Yamuna floodplains. On May 30, the Delhi High Court had dismissed a plea seeking protection for the refugee camp. It had ruled that the Pakistani Hindu refugees living there 'have no legal right to continue to occupy the area in question – the Yamuna floodplains at Majnu Ka Tilla'. It had added that safeguarding the floodplains was essential, 'not only from an environmental standpoint but also in compliance with the categorical and consistent directions of the Supreme Court, the NGT, as well as the hon'ble High Court.' Following this, the DDA had issued a public notice on July 14 asking residents to vacate the area the same day, warning that 'they will be self-responsible for any loss due to demolition drive' scheduled for July 15 and 16. In a recent order, the HC had observed, 'Even Indian citizens cannot claim alternate allotment as an absolute right, particularly in cases where the land they occupy falls under specially prohibited areas like Zone 'O' of Delhi.' Zone O primarily refers to the floodplain of the Yamuna.
