Will Castro discusses 'Unique Academy,' famous clients, including ex-Chiefs All-Pro

USA Today17 hours ago
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to acclaimed car customizer and TV personality Will Castro about his new show, 'Unique Academy,' and the strong bonds he builds with his students and famous sports clientele.
"They definitely get excited. They know the history. Many of them (students) know the history of 'Unique' we work with: celebrities, sports, athletes, musicians, producers, and actors. So they know that they're working with high-profile clients. Still, I also told them that they're coming here to be able to talk to them and mentor them and give them their side of the story, because they're from the same cloth that they came from," said Castro, "Many of these guys came from underprivileged homes but were talented. We want to be able to give back this to the kids, a skill, a trade, and not even if they don't go into the automotive space, but at least give them accountability, responsibility, provide them with some guidelines, and how to handle life."
Castro, known for his decades of work customizing cars for stars like LeBron James, DJ Khaled, and Super Bowl champion Victor Cruz, brings his signature blend of hustle, heart, and horsepower to this powerful new format, mentoring the next generation. He notably did a special customization years ago for former Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro running back Larry Johnson.
"We just finished Larry Johnson's '66 Lincoln Continental from the Kansas City Chiefs," said Castro in a 2008 interview, "We're doing a lot of old-school for ball players. They're getting into them a lot more. I think what's different about them is they know what they want."
Former New York Jets safety Erik Coleman, a Castro client, shared his thoughts with Easton Jr.
"Will was one of the guys when I got to New York. I was drafted. I remember visiting the facility and seeing this building, which said 'Unique'. It was a Unique Auto Sports," said Coleman, "I asked one of the older guys, I'm like, yo, is that Unique, like the one? And they're like, that's Will Castro. I dropped in there, probably with one of my teammates, and started talking with Will, and immediately started a friendship. It was awesome because he educated you, and you didn't feel like you had to buy a bunch of stuff. He was like, man, whatever you could dream up, we could figure it out for you. So it was, it was really nice."
Acclaimed car customizer and TV personality Will Castro is back with an inspiring new series, Unique Academy, streaming now exclusively on Roku.

Shedeur Sanders Sends Clear Message About Browns QB Competition

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Cleveland Browns are just five days away from the start of training camp, and ultimately closer to an answer about who their starting quarterback will be in 2025. As things stand, former Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco, former first-round pick Kenny Pickett, 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, and 2025 fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders are all deadlocked in a battle for presumably two spots, possibly three. On the surface, Flacco would seem to be the frontrunner given his experience and Pickett the backup for the same reason. Many fans are convinced Sanders and Gabriel are battling for one roster spot, with their performances during training camp and the preseason the likely deciding factor. Many expected Sanders to have a much easier path to an NFL roster when he was projected to be a first-round pick in April's draft. But after a five-round freefall, Sanders now has his work cut out trying to force his way up the depth chart in a crowded QB room — and based on what he told reporters after the draft, Browns general manager Andrew Berry wants the path to Cleveland's 53-man roster to be a challenge for Sanders. Sprecher/Getty Images "[The] message is come in and work," Berry said, via "Come in and compete. Nothing is being given. We told him it really doesn't matter where you're picked. It's what you do going forward." While Sanders has his work cut out for him, he also seems to be game. The 23-year-old posted a video to his Instagram page on Friday just ahead of Browns' training camp, and he seemingly sent a message about where he stands in Cleveland's four-QB race. "You know, no excuses," Sanders said. "I'll put in the work and do what I have to do. About to be time to be legendary, whenever that time is. You know, mentally, at the very beginning, it'll be a challenge. But I like the challenge now." More NFL: Analyst Makes Bold Tua Tagovailoa-Zach Wilson Prediction Despite his draft misfortune, Sanders has maintained a positive attitude throughout OTAs and minicamp. Though most of his reps came with the second- and third-team offense, Sanders told reporters instead of looking at that negatively, he approached it as an opportunity to go out and show the coaches what he can do. If Sanders doesn't make Cleveland's 53-man roster, there seems to be a decent trade market for him. Teams that have been linked to a possible trade for Sanders include the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, and the Indianapolis Colts.

"It took time but I have come to realize I am retired from the NFL," James wrote on X. "7th round out of MTSU. I feel like I was just a ball player to last that long. Unfortunately my knee never healed properly. I was playing hurt since '22. Oh well. I gave everything I got to the game of Football." MORE: It's a big time for Shedeur Sanders in Cleveland James' NFL career began as a seventh-round pick (240 overall) out of Middle Tennessee State in 2018 by the San Francisco 49ers. For the 'Niners, James played three seasons and caught 38 passes for 689 yards with three touchdowns. He spent the 2022 season with the Giants, a career year with 57 grabs for 569 yards and four TDs. James joined the Chiefs for 2023 and caught 10 passes in the regular season. In the Super Bowl, he returned four punts for 12 yards.
