PM Modi praises 'limitless potential' of growing bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia
Jeddah/New Delhi, Apr 22 (UNI) As he visits Jeddah for bilateral talks with the Saudi leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the 'limitless potential' of India's growing ties with Saudi Arabia.
PM Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, his third since 2016, has described the Kingdom as 'a trusted friend and strategic ally', in an interview to Arab News.
He has emphasised how bilateral relations have expanded significantly since the creation of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019.
'Our partnership has limitless potential,' Modi said. 'In a world full of uncertainties, our bond stands strong, as a pillar of stability.'
He praised Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman's leadership, calling him 'a strong advocate of our bilateral ties' and a visionary who has inspired global admiration through the reforms under Vision 2030.
'Every time I have met him, His Royal Highness has left a deep impression on me. His insights, his forward-thinking vision, and his passion for fulfilling the aspirations of his people are truly remarkable,' he said.
Highlighting shared economic ambitions, PM Modi noted that trade between the two countries had grown even amid global challenges, with energy, agriculture and fertilsers as key sectors.
He welcomed deeper integration of Saudi and Indian businesses, particularly in emerging sectors like green hydrogen and technology. 'Indian companies have also maintained a strong presence across various sectors in Saudi Arabia,' he said.
Modi also congratulated the Kingdom for winning the bids to host World Expo 2030 and FIFA World Cup 2034, describing the dual successes as a matter of 'immense pride'.
He also pointed to growing defense cooperation and landmark joint military exercises as signs of increasing strategic trust.
On the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), launched during the G20 Summit in September 2023, Modi said the project would be 'a key catalyst of commerce, connectivity and growth in the entire region.'
'Our relations have been on an upward trajectory since 2014. I fondly recall that in 2016, I had the honor of receiving The Order of King Abdulaziz from His Majesty King Salman.
'I truly believe these are promising times for India-Saudi Arabia ties. And, I must say, the Saudi leadership has played a vital role in strengthening this partnership.
'India and Saudi Arabia will keep moving forward together — for peace, progress and prosperity, not just for our people, but for the entire world.'
On Crown Prince and PM Mohammad bin Salman, the PM said:
'I value the personal warmth and trust we share. And, yes, this personal rapport has naturally translated into how both countries give priority to our partnership. He is a strong advocate of our bilateral ties. He has been a great supporter of the Indian diaspora in Saudi Arabia and our people living in Saudi Arabia deeply admire him.
'When we talk, we focus on making this partnership future-ready. Jeddah has had a special connection with India. For centuries, this famed city has been one of the principal arteries for our trade and people-to-people exchanges. As a gateway to Makkah, for ages, our pilgrims have walked the by-lanes of Jeddah on their holy journey for Hajj and Umrah.'
PM Modi said the two countries are working on a Bilateral Investment Treaty. 'The proposed Free Trade Agreement between India and GCC has immense potential to transform the economic relationship between India and Saudi Arabia, and the region in general.'
Congratulating Saudi Arabia for being chosen as the host for World Expo in 2030 and FIFA World Cup in 2034, PM Modi said the mega events also offer opportunities for Indian companies. 'Our companies, as you are aware, have built a global reputation for their quality, competitiveness and efficiency.
'I understand that the Indian companies already have a strong participation in Saudi infrastructure and technology sectors. They are also creating value in various mega and giga projects as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
'I also invite Saudi companies to take advantage of the remarkable opportunities in India as part of our Viksit Bharat journey. They can participate in the growth of India's next-generation infrastructure, logistics, renewable energy, healthcare, utilities, innovation, start-ups and 'blue economy' sectors.
'Deeper engagements and two-way collaborations between companies of both countries will go a long way in strengthening the bilateral economic partnership.'

In a conversation with European media network Euractiv, he was asked whether India could trust Trump. Jaishankar replied: 'Meaning what?'. The US President has often reiterated his claim of mediating peace between New Delhi and Islamabad, while India has asserted that the decision was made strictly bilaterally. Speaking at a campaign event on May 31, Trump once again said he 'got India and Pakistan to stop fighting' by linking trade talks to de-escalation. 'We talk trade, and we say we can't trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons… They understood and they agreed, and that all stopped,' he said. Earlier, on May 10, when the two nuclear-armed countries agreed to stop firing and military action, the United States claimed credit for brokering the ceasefire with Trump saying the two countries agreed on a full and immediate ceasefire 'after a long night of talks mediated by the United States'. New Delhi has dismissed such remarks in the past and maintains that the ceasefire following Operation Sindoor was the outcome of direct bilateral engagement with Pakistan. Indian officials have underlined that no foreign government, including the United States, was involved — and that trade negotiations with Washington were unrelated to any security decisions made in the region. Jaishankar, who is in Brussels to meet European Union (EU) leaders, also spoke about India's foreign policy priorities from counterterrorism and trade to multipolarity and global trust. On the recent clash with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, Jaishankar urged the West to see India's response under Operation Sindoor as an anti-terror operation—not a border spat. 'This isn't merely an India-Pakistan issue. It's about terrorism,' he said, adding: 'Let me remind you—Osama bin Laden lived in a Pakistani military town, right next to their equivalent of West Point. That very same terrorism will eventually come back to haunt you.' He also criticised the international media coverage for reducing the situation to 'tit-for-tat between two nuclear-armed neighbours.' Noting Europe's search for 'strategic autonomy,' Jaishankar said multipolarity is already here. Privilege motion against Suvendu Adhikari for remarks against Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata: West Bengal assembly speaker Biman Banerjee on Wednesday accepted a privilege motion moved by four Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators against leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari for allegedly making defamatory remarks against chief minister Mamata Banerjee outside the assembly house on Tuesday. The speaker told the media that the motion has been sent to the assembly's privilege committee for review. 'The committee will submit its report by the next session,' he said. The next session is likely to be held in September, according to assembly officials. On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that the Pahalgam terror attack had proved the Centre's failure to provide security to Indian citizens. She made the remarks during discussions on a resolution moved by the TMC government condemning the April 22 terror attack and hailing the subsequent action by the Indian armed forces against Pakistan. In the resolution, which was adopted unanimously, the name of the Indian action, Operation Sindoor, was, however, not mentioned. After the proceedings, Adhikari told reporters outside the assembly house that Banerjee batted for Pakistan throughout her speech. 'She batted for Pakistan all the way and also insulted our Prime Minister and Union home minister,' he said. Hours after this, TMC legislators submitted an application at the speaker's office seeking permission to move a privilege motion against Adhikari.

The former Chhattisgarh CM targeted the incumbent BJP government and said that in the past 11 years, the BJP leaders have made a lot of 'noise' but their every scheme has failed and gone up in 'smoke'. 'In these 11 years, BJP leaders are making a lot of noise, giving fiery speeches, but if we see what they have achieved in these 11 years, then every scheme has completely failed and gone up in smoke. Modi ji's entire politics has been of disintegration and division', Bhupesh Baghel told reporters. He attacked the BJP and said that they have engaged in the 'politics of disintegration and division.' The Congress leader added that all the communities in the country are feeling insecure, and PM Modi's speeches add fuel to the fire. 'Look at the history of 11 years, the ruling BJP has done the politics of disintegration and division, and people of all communities in the whole country are feeling insecure, and the Prime Minister is repeatedly adding fuel to the fire with his speeches', he added. Bhupesh Baghel accused the Union Government of atrocities against tribals and Dalits. He stated that PM Modi doesn't take any action against his party people who insult women, tribals and army officials. 'They are not perturbed by the atrocities on Dalits and tribals. They enjoy insulting people. Even if their people insult, torture Dalits, harass women-tribals and insult army officers, they do not take any action against them', he told reporters. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his completion of 11 years in office. Kharge criticised PM Modi and said he has never seen a PM who tells so many lies. The Congress President said that he has been in politics for 65 years, and alleged that PM Modi is deceiving the youth and taking votes by luring the poor. 'I have been saying this in Parliament for a long time, and I have never seen a Prime Minister who lies so much, makes so many mistakes, traps people, deceives the youth, and takes votes by trapping people. I have been in politics for 65 years. He has lied on everything and not even one has been implemented', Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters in Kalaburagi on Wednesday. (ANI)
