Court-ordered auction of 21 Husain works fetches ₹68.5 crore
The auction, conducted under heavy police presence, fetched a total of ₹68.5 crore, not including Buyer's premium and GST. The highest-selling works included a triptych that sold for ₹9.5 crore, and the Gandhi-figure canvas that fetched ₹8.5 crore, both of which were acquired by the same person, who was present in the room. The auction also saw sales made via online bids and by telephone callers.
Police personnel in plain clothes and uniform discreetly paced the premises of auctioneer Pundole's during the sale, and installed barricades outside its South Mumbai office, after a right wing group demanded a 'ban' on the auction and warned of 'strong public protest' if their demands were not met. The protest, however, was called off, and the auction proceeded smoothly on Thursday.
Earlier this year, the Bombay high court (HC) ordered the auction and directed the Bombay Sheriff to oversee the sale on the instance of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED). The federation secured these works in 2008 as part of a case involving an unpaid loan of ₹236 crore by industrialist Guru Swarup Srivastava's Swarup Group of Industries. Srivastava had bought these paintings from Husain for an eyebrow-raising sum of ₹25 crore in 2004. The news made a splash at the time, as Srivastava valued each canvas at ₹1 crore, far higher than what any canvas of Husain cost at the time.
The collection titled Our Plant Called Earth or OPCE, depicted Husain's documentation of the 20th century through icons, symbolic figures and significant political events. Made using acrylic on long stretches of canvas that Husain later cut to individual works, they offer an important insight into the varied inspirations that shaped his global, cosmopolitan and culturally secular outlook. Husain also announced his plans to make a total of 100 such works, but abandoned the project eventually.
The artist soon became the object of ire of right wing groups who protested against his depiction of Hindu gods and goddesses. He eventually left India and died in 2011 in self-exile.
Last week, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, which has protested against Husain's works before as well, submitted a memorandum to the office of the Maharashtra CM, Mumbai Police Commissioner and the District Collector, demanding a ban on the auction, and warned of a 'strong public protest' if their demands weren't met. 'The sale exceeded expectations,' said Dadiba Pundole, and added that the works were an important part of India's cultural history. The money will be deposited with the Mumbai Sheriff, who will then entrust the money to the HC, a court-appointed official, said.

HC orders screening of CCTV footage of Nainital poll counting
Dehradun: The Uttarakhand high court (HC) bench of Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Subhash Upadhyay on Wednesday directed that CCTV footage of the zila panchayat president election counting in Nainital be screened. The court was hearing a petition filed by Poonam Bisht, one of the 22 voters in the election, who alleged that a ballot was tampered with during counting on the intervening night of Aug 14-15. The bench ordered that the footage, preserved in the treasury locker, be shown at 11 am on Thursday at the district magistrate's (DM) office. DM Vandana Singh will arrange for the screening and ensure videography of the process. Bisht's counsel has alleged that an officer tampered with a ballot paper, adding to the controversy surrounding the result. The HC directed that the petitioner, govt counsels, the State Election Commission's advocate and both presidential candidates -- Deepa Darmwal and Pushpa Negi -- be present during the review of CCTV and video recordings. The bench clarified that only nine individuals will attend the screening: three advocates from the petitioner's side, three from the govt, the SEC advocate, and the two candidates. "The tally was equal, so a lottery was conducted to decide the winner. I saw the entire process, as did the observer and it is recorded in the CCTV footage," she told the court. Singh added that both candidates were given two opportunities to examine the process and review the ballots, once during the counting itself and again on Aug 19. Boy stabbed to death On Tuesday (August 19) afternoon, a class 10 student named Nayan packed his bags to leave for home after the school bell rang. The incident took place outside the premises of the Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad's Khokhra at 12:30 pm on Tuesday. The accused minor is said to have then fled the scene. The victim was taken to a private hospital. However, he died of his injuries at 3 am on Wednesday. A CCTV footage shows Nayan walking inside the school with his hand on his bleeding stomach. As per Indian Express, the attack was allegedly the result of a scuffle between the students a week ago. Massive protests due to student's death in Gujarat A large number of protesters gathered outside the private school in Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning, hours after Nayan's death. The incident flared up anger as the victim and the accused minor were from different communities. While Nayan belonged to the Sindhi community, the accused student comes from the minority community, reported India Today. Around 2 pm on Wednesday, the family took out a procession with the corpse of the deceased student and kept it outside the school gates. They were joined by members of the Sindhi community as well as activists from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal. While the primary accused juvenile was placed under detention yesterday, another juvenile is being questioned in this matter.' Gujarat Education Minister Prafulbhai Panseriya condoled Nayan's demise and urged protesting parents to maintain peace. He assured justice in the case and proposed conducting a study on rising crime among children. School to be probed Parents of the deceased student and Hindu groups have also filed complaints against the school principal and management, demanding accountability. The District Education Officer (city) has served a notice to the school management. Rohit Chaudhary, DEO (city), told Indian Express: 'The school management has been asked to submit their detailed response on how this incident happened, where the security was placed; if the incident did not happen on the campus but close by as revealed in the primary investigation, how did the victim student soaked in blood come inside the school premises after the attack, and what action the management took."
