MITI urged to boost anti-corruption efforts with business community

The Sun4 days ago
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has been urged to strengthen collaboration with businesses and investors to address corruption concerns affecting Malaysia's economic growth.
The recommendation emerged during a meeting of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) Special Task Force, led by Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abdul Bakar.
The task force highlighted the need for MITI to conduct engagement sessions with the business community, including the Special Task Force to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH), to gather direct feedback on corruption risks.
The sessions aim to enhance transparency and trust in Malaysia's governance system.
Key reform strategies identified include promoting integrity culture and leveraging technology to combat corruption.
Local authorities were also encouraged to lead by example in ethical governance.
'The CPI Special Task Force remains fully committed to strengthening governance and anti-corruption efforts through a whole-of-government approach,' the statement read.
Malaysia's improved performance in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025, rising 11 spots to 23rd place, was partly attributed to progress in the Bribery and Corruption indicator.
The task force hopes these efforts will further elevate Malaysia's CPI ranking, targeting a top-25 global position within a decade.
The meeting was attended by MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki and CPI task force members.
The group was formed to strategise improvements in Malaysia's anti-corruption measures and global perception. – Bernama

Teoh family reciprocates DAP leaders' bow, thanks supporters

The family of Teoh Beng Hock and members of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement bowing at a public memorial to Teoh Beng Hock organised by the association. KUALA LUMPUR : The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock bowed tonight in response to a public apology by DAP leaders on Thursday. Beng Hock's parents, sister Lee Lan and members of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) lined up and bowed at a public memorial organised by the association. 'We, the family of Teoh Beng Hock, and the TBH-ADA will return a bow of courtesy. 'We bow to every individual, every organisation, every party and person who have stood with us in this long struggle. 'We thank you for your unwavering solidarity. We believe your support was granted not in pity or charity, but in a shared expectation of justice,' said an emcee. The memorial marks the 16th anniversary of Beng Hock's death. On Thursday, DAP leaders bowed in 'respect and sorrow' to the family, acknowledging they had been let down by investigations into the former political aide's death. DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, vice-chairman Teo Nie Ching, Selangor DAP chief Ng Sze Han and Teoh's former boss, Ean Yong Hian Wah, bowed for about a minute at the end of a press conference at DAP's headquarters. The day before, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki apologised to the family and said the agency was prepared to provide them with a goodwill contribution. Beng Hock, who was 30, was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that the death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers. In May, former inspector-general of police Razarudin Husain confirmed that the investigation paper on Beng Hock's death was classified as needing no further action, after the Attorney-General's Chambers said it found insufficient evidence to bring charges.

Op Metal: MACC freezes RM332.5mil in assets, bank accounts tied to syndicate

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized and frozen assets and bank accounts amounting to RM332.5 million in connection with a scrap metal smuggling syndicate operating in five states. The seizures were made following raids conducted on Monday as part of investigations into the export of scrap metal using false declarations to avoid tax, Utusan Malaysia reported, citing sources. The amount includes assets and accounts belonging to individuals and companies linked to the syndicate, which is believed to have defrauded the government of over RM950 million in export duties over the past six years. A prominent businessman with a "Datuk Seri" title is among those under investigation and is expected to return to the MACC headquarters this Monday for further questioning. "The individual's statement was recorded yesterday after returning from overseas, but he was not arrested," a source was quoted as saying. The businessman is suspected of declaring scrap metal exports as other metal-based machinery and items, which are not subject to the 15 per cent export duty imposed by the government. The syndicate's operations came to light after the MACC's Special Operations Division launched Op Metal, a coordinated raid involving the Customs Department, Inland Revenue Board, and Bank Negara Malaysia. Assets seized include three bungalows, a penthouse, shop lots, plots of land, an oil palm plantation, luxury vehicles, and high-end watches, all estimated to be worth over RM183 million. In addition, authorities froze 45 corporate accounts and 82 individual bank accounts valued at approximately RM51 million. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki previously confirmed the seizures, which included real estate, luxury cars, and watches. The ongoing investigation is focused on offences under Sections 16 (bribery) and 18 (false claims) of the MACC Act 2009. Authorities are also looking into potential money laundering activities, supported by investigations under the Income Tax Act 1967 and the Customs Act 1967.
