‘Proud to have you': Anand Mahindra celebrates Kush Maini's F2 breakthrough

Mint25-05-2025
Kush Maini scripted a watershed moment in Indian motorsport on Saturday, becoming the first Indian driver to win a Formula 2 race at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix. The 24-year-old clinched victory in the Sprint Race with a commanding lights-to-flag performance for Dams Lucas Oil, sending a strong message to the paddock and delighting fans back home.
Among the first to congratulate Maini was business magnate Anand Mahindra, who took to social media to laud the achievement. "You are standing tall, @kmainiofficial, and the country stands tall with you," Mahindra wrote.
"Kush Maini making history as the 1st Indian winner of an F2 race in Monte Carlo… We are proud to have you on our team at @MahindraRacing."
Maini started the Sprint Race from pole position courtesy of Formula 2's reverse-grid rule, which flipped the top ten qualifiers for Saturday's event. Having originally qualified 10th for the Feature Race, the Bengaluru-born racer seized the opportunity with a faultless drive on the notoriously unforgiving streets of Monte Carlo.
From the moment the lights went out, Maini remained composed under pressure, defending his lead with clinical precision across 30 gruelling laps. The narrow confines of the circuit, where overtaking is a rarity, left no room for error—a challenge Maini met head-on to claim a milestone victory.
Speaking after the race, a visibly emotional Maini described the win as a 'dream come true' and thanked his team and supporters.
'We kept believing, and it paid off,' he said on the podium, as the Indian national anthem rang out across Monaco.
Now in his second full season in Formula 2, Maini has been striving for a breakthrough in what has been a challenging 2025 campaign. Saturday's result marks a turning point and comes at a critical juncture as he aims to build consistency and gather points in the races ahead.
Among those celebrating the win was Gautam Singhania, who was present at the circuit and met Maini in the pit lane following the race. Singhania's JK Racing and TVS Racing have long supported the young driver, playing a key role in his development through the junior categories of international racing.
Currently serving as a reserve driver for the BWT Alpine F1 Team, Maini's progress is being closely followed by stakeholders in Indian motorsport. His Monaco victory not only elevates his stock but also raises hopes of a full-time Formula 1 seat in the future.
Maini will now turn his attention to Sunday's Feature Race, where he will start from 10th on the grid. With momentum on his side, he will be aiming to deliver another strong performance before the paddock moves to Barcelona next weekend.
Regardless of what lies ahead, Maini's maiden Formula 2 win at Monaco has already cemented his place in history—marking a proud moment for Indian motorsport and igniting inspiration for a new generation of aspiring racers.

PCB issues ban on ‘Pakistan' name in private cricket after WCL 2025 fiasco: Report

Following the embarrassment faced by the Pakistan Legends side in the World Championship of Legends, the Pakistan Cricket Board has reportedly decided to ban all private cricket leagues from using the country's name, according to a recent report. The decision by the PCB comes shortly after India Champions refused to play with their Pakistani counterparts in the semi-final of the tournament in Birmingham. Prior to the semi-final clash, Indian players like Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh had also opted out of the league stage match against the arch-rivals. The cricketers attributed the decision to the rising geopolitical tensions between the two countries, especially in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing Operation Sindoor launched by the Indian armed forces. With India boycotting the semi-final clash against Pakistan, the neighbours had qualified for the final match. If a report by Telecom Asia Sport is to be believed, the Pakistan Legends side has been allowed to play the final match against South Africa on Saturday, but the PCB has made it clear that no future teams or leagues will be permitted to use the 'Pakistan' name without formal clearance by the cricket board. The decision was reportedly taken by the PCB after an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors after India Champions refused to take the field twice against Pakistan. 'The decision was taken after a detailed discussion in the Board of Directors meeting on Thursday. The high-level authorities felt Indian players refusing to play Pakistan in the WCL's second edition twice was hurtful to the name of the country," quoted a source as saying. 'Going forward, no private organisation will be allowed to use the country's name in any capacity unless the PCB verifies the league's legitimacy and reputation. All violators will face legal action,' it added. Mint could not independently verify the report. After the cancellation of the semi-final match, WCL had issued a statement writing, 'At WCL, we have always believed in the power of sport to inspire and bring about positive change in the world. However, public sentiment must always be respected — after all, everything we do is for our audience,' the WCL statement read. 'We respect the India Champions' decision to withdraw from the semi-finals, and we equally respect the Pakistan Champions' readiness to compete. Taking all factors into consideration, the match between the India Champions and the Pakistan Champions has been called off,' it added.

Irfan Pathan Hails Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna For Brilliance With Ball In Oval Test

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan on Friday lauded pacers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna for their four-wicket hauls against England on the second day of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval. Siraj was the standout performer, dismissing England skipper Ollie Pope, world No.1 Test batter Joe Root, Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook. Siraj returned with figures of 4/62, while Krishna also impressed with a spell of 4/80. Akash Deep contributed with a wicket as well. Praising the Indian pace duo, Pathan wrote in a post on X, "When you give the responsibility of leading the pack to Mohammed Siraj, he delivers differently. And those four wickets will do a world of good to Prasidh Krishna. Siraj also achieved a personal milestone by completing 200 international wickets across all formats. In 101 matches, he has taken 203 wickets at an average of 28.94 and an economy rate of 4.11, with best figures of 6/15 against Australia. Siraj is the most wicket-taker in the ongoing England series; he has grabbed 18 wickets in five fixtures, at an average of 25.23 and an economy of 3.06, with best figures of 6/70. Coming to the match, Yashasvi Jaiswal ensured India ended the second day on a strong note. At the end of the day's play, India was 75/2, with Jaiswal (51*) and night-watchman Akash Deep (4*) unbeaten. They lead by 52 runs. In their first innings, England had scored 247 in response to India's 224. However, Prasidh Krishna (4/62) and Mohammed Siraj (4/86) bowled extremely well to deny England a massive lead and triggered a batting collapse. The final session of the day kicked off with England being 215/7, with Harry Brook (33*) joined by Gus Atkinson, a capable lower-order hitter.
