How uproar over a Māori haka, beloved in New Zealand life, sowed chaos and gridlock in Parliament

Washington Post20-05-2025

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The haka, a chanting dance of challenge, is sacred to New Zealand's Māori people but it's become a beloved cultural institution among New Zealanders of all races. Spine-tingling performances at sports events, funerals and graduations often go viral online, a non-partisan point of pride for the country abroad.

Why Caitlin Clark Refused to Sign Fan's Shirt on Saturday

Why Caitlin Clark Refused to Sign Fan's Shirt on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Since her arrival on the women's basketball scene, going back to her time at Iowa, even before she was the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever in the WNBA draft in 2024, Caitlin Clark understood the value of connecting with fans. She struggled to get her head around her job as a role model, but she was diligent about seeing to that duty. Advertisement As she said early last year, "It's hard for myself to wrap my head around (being a role model). It's crazy the way people scream my name and really support us. I try to make time for as many of them as I can. That's something that never gets old.' Clark has always seen bringing people together, on and off the floor, as part of her role. 'This isn't an individual sport," she said. "I have four other people on the court with me at the same time, I have 10 other girls on the bench. ... I don't have to score a million points every single night and I think I find peace in that. When I'm having fun and just being Caitlin, that's when things are really successful.' She has been out for the past two weeks because of a quad injury--the first missed time because of injury in her career--but she has still been showing up at Fever games as she rehabs. Advertisement She was on hand at the United Center on Saturday night for the Fever's victory over the Chicago Sky, and spent considerable time before the game signing autographs and taking photos with fans who had come to watch her play. But she drew the line on one thing: She was not about to autograph Sky materials. That was shown in a video on X from Saturday in which Clark signed a string of autographs only to smile and pass on signing what appeared to be a Chicago Sky-colored shirt. A post from the account, "The Indiana Fever," noted, "Caitlin Clark refused to sign the Chicago Sky merch." The fan who had tried to get her to do so, it should be pointed out, laughed it off. Fans React to Big Caitlin Clark Announcement on Sunday

Fans React to Big Caitlin Clark Announcement on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has missed the last four games with a left quadriceps strain but isn't expected to be out much longer. Advertisement In the games she has played, she's continued to show why she's one of the best players in the WNBA. So far this season, the reigning Rookie of the Year is averaging 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 9.3 assists per game. On Sunday, Wilson Basketball shared a video on social media of Clark in the gym, knocking down shots from behind the arc. "Season Two, loading," Wilson Basketball captioned their post while tagging Clark, the WNBA and the Fever. Wilson Basketball signed Clark to a multi-year deal in 2024, making her the first athlete since Michael Jordan to receive a signature ball series. Since then, the brand released the "Limitless Series" with four designs: Repetition, Ascent, 3951 and Highlight Reel. Now, Wilson Basketball is teasing the next release for Season No. 2, and fans couldn't be more excited about the news. Advertisement "Bring them all , I need the ROTY and the jersey retirement ball I NEED THEM !!!," a fan said. "Wilson does it right," another wrote. "Make the collection available worldwide please and thank you," added another. "Wilson is clearly teasing something — they've been doing the best job with Caitlin so far. I never thought I'd own a basketball collection from Wilson until CC came along," one wrote. "Scary hours loading," a fan said. "Here we go," said another. "Wilson is made to celebrate the most iconic moments in sport, and we have always aligned ourselves with trailblazers who break boundaries and write their own story," Lamb said. "Caitlin Clark is not just a record-setting athlete, but a cultural icon who has had a profound impact on the game. Is Carlos Alcaraz dating anyone? Here's what we know.

Carlos Alcaraz has ascended to the top of the tennis world, with wins in three of the four Grand Slams and -- as of publishing this -- a spot in the 2025 French Open finals. As for his personal life? We know for sure he's not married and despite rumors about someone he's dating, it seems like he's still single. Advertisement As you might recall, he said this to Vogue way back in 2023: 'It's complicated, never staying in one place ... It's hard to find the person who can share things with you if you're always in different parts of the world.' In 2024, he said this via the Sunday Times: 'I am single. I am looking for someone. It can be difficult as a tennis player to meet the right person because you are travelling all the time.' And in 2025? There doesn't seem to be any news about a significant other at the moment.
