Violent suspected MS-13 gang member with long rap sheet arrested after year on the run: police
A suspected MS-13 gang member with a violent criminal history has been arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, after a year on the run, police said.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Leonel Vargas Jr., 24, was arrested Wednesday afternoon.
Davidson County jail records show that he has been charged with felony aggravated assault by strangulation, felony aggravated burglary, felony probation violation, misdemeanor domestic assault and two counts of misdemeanor theft of property.
He is not eligible for bond.
MNPD said its Specialized Investigations Division (SID) detectives and federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents, who have been investigating Vargas' association with the ultra-violent Salvadoran MS-13 gang, coordinated the surveillance that led to the arrest.
ATF confirmed to Fox News Digital that their investigation into Vargas' MS-13 ties is ongoing.
Vargas has a long criminal history stemming back to 2019.
In that year, he was charged with aggravated assault by strangulation, two counts of domestic assault resulting in bodily injury and one count of domestic assault with fear of bodily injury. He was sentenced to probation for those crimes.
In 2022, he violated his probation and was sentenced to a year in prison, and a year of supervised release. In the same year, a 2021 case for felony evading arrest by motor vehicle and reckless endangerment was reopened.
He was found guilty on those charges in 2023 and was sentenced to two years of supervised release.
Last year, he was charged with felony domestic aggravated assault, burglary and theft, and was on the run from police until they arrested him on Wednesday.
Earlier this week, FBI Director Kash Patel announced a $5 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of MS-13's leader in Honduras, Yulan Adonay Archaga Carías.
In the United States, the gang has recently been in the news after one alleged member, illegal immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia, was deported to El Salvador.
He was suspected of being involved in labor/human trafficking, according to a 2022 Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) report obtained by Fox News.

Marjorie Taylor Greene 'Thrilled' About Kilmar Abrego Garcia's Return To US
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said on Wednesday that she's "thrilled" Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, has been brought back to the United States to face criminal charges. The Context Abrego Garcia was deported in March as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on undocumented migrants across the country, which has swept up people who are legally permitted to be in the U.S. and people being wrongly deported to other countries. Abrego Garcia's deportation violated a U.S. immigration judge's 2019 order that shielded him from expulsion to his native El Salvador. The Trump administration acknowledged in court filings that Abrego Garcia had been deported by mistake, citing an "administrative error." But U.S. officials later said he was deported because of a 2019 accusation from local police that he was a member of the notorious MS-13 gang, an allegation Abrego Garcia has vehemently denied. At the time of his deportation, he had not been charged with a crime. What To Know Abrego Garcia was returned to the U.S. from El Salvador earlier this month and is now facing federal human smuggling charges. "He is now being charged on multiple felony counts of human trafficking," Greene said on Wednesday while speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives. "As a matter of fact, we're thrilled to bring him back and prosecute him and make you guys continue to own him," she added, referring to Democrats who advocated for Abrego Garcia to be repatriated so he could be granted his right to due process. "Remember? He's your Maryland man," Greene said. Greene: We're thrilled to bring him back and prosecute him and make you guys own him. Feds warn of homemade fireworks following house explosion
LIBERTY, Ohio (WKBN) – Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives say homemade fireworks are illegal. 'From our perspective, that's highly dangerous,' said Bill Halusek, with ATFFE. Halusek is with the ATF office in Cincinnati. He says scenes like the one from Saturday in Liberty, where a house exploded due to what is believed to have been homemade fireworks, are becoming dangerously more common. 'We've seen an uptick in labs this year. In the last two months, I know of four labs like the one in Youngstown that have eradicated,' Halusek said. Halusek says the difference between fireworks sold in licensed stores, the display types that we can watch on the 4th of July, and illegal explosives essentially comes down to the amount of flash powder contained in them. He said illegal devices often contain too much of the powder and are extremely volatile. 'It can detonate very easily. Static electricity from a finger touch could do it,' Halusek said. ATF agents were on the scene of the Liberty home explosion over the weekend to help search for evidence, and the incident is being actively investigated. Halusek stresses consumers can never fully trust devices that don't come through a licensed dealer. 'You never know what you're going to get when you're buying from someone who manufactured it themself,' he said. The sale of display fireworks is heavily regulated by both the federal government and the state, but Halusek admits they can occasionally turn up on the black market. 'If folks were to see those types of display fireworks, avoid them. Contact your local law enforcement to come get them,' he said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Salvadoran restaurant workers aid deputies injured during Compton ICE raids protests
Amid protests sparked by a weekend immigration enforcement operation in Los Angeles County, workers at a Salvadoran restaurant in Compton were seen helping injured deputies who had responded to the scene. Footage captured by stringer service shows at least three Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies being treated by employees at Restaurante Y Pupuseria La Ceiba, a local Salvadoran eatery on East Alondra Boulevard. The deputies appeared to be suffering from protest-related injuries, including what seemed to be irritation from pepper spray. Video shows two deputies seated inside the restaurant while about four or five workers fanned their faces with plates and provided them with ice and poured a refreshing beverage—possibly water or a traditional drink—to rinse out their eyes and ease the discomfort. The circumstances of how or why the deputies ended up inside the restaurant remain unclear. However, reports the incident took place during protests in Compton that followed an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid earlier in the day in the nearby city of Paramount. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that around 11 a.m. Saturday, deputies were dispatched to the 6400 block of Alondra Boulevard in Paramount on reports of a large group blocking traffic—only a few blocks away from the restaurant. 'As deputies arrived, it appeared that federal law enforcement officers were in the area, and that members of the public were gathering to protest,' LASD said. 'The sheriff's department was not involved in any federal law enforcement operations or actions and responded solely for traffic and crowd control management.' United States Attorney Bill Essayli stated on social media that federal law enforcement operations are 'proceeding as planned this weekend in Los Angeles County' and advised that anyone who tries to interfere with their enforcement will be arrested and prosecuted. While the extent of the deputies' injuries was not immediately disclosed, the video ends with them reassembling their gear and appearing to return to their patrol vehicles.
