Giro d'Italia: Pedersen dominates another sprint finish to win stage five

The Guardian14-05-2025

Mads Pedersen continued his domination of sprint finishes at the Giro d'Italia by winning stage five on Wednesday, his third stage victory of this year's race which extended the Danish rider's overall lead.
At the end of the 151km ride from Celglie Messapica to Matera, Pedersen appeared to struggle with the pace on the climb to the finish, but recovered before starting his dash to the line early, just managing to hold off the challengers.
Italian Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain Victorious) almost caught the Lidl-Trek man on the line but had to settle for second place, ahead of Britain's Tom Pidcock (Q36.5). Pedersen's 10-second bonus for the win stretched his lead to 17 seconds over Slovenia's Primoz Roglic.

Man Utd on red alert with PSG ‘open to SELLING Champions League hero Gianluigi Donnarumma for bargain transfer fee'

MANCHESTER UNITED have been put on alert after hearing Paris Saint-Germain's bargain asking price for Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Red Devils are hunting for a new No.1 this summer as uncertainty continues around the future of current goalkeeper Andre Onana. 3 3 Onana joined the club in a £47.1m deal two years ago, but has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting the club are looking at replacing him. Man Utd have expressed interest in Donnarumma, 26, during his contract stand-off with the newly crowned Kings of Europe. Donnarumma, considered one of the best shot-stoppers in the world, has entered the final 12 months of his contract in the French capital. And now United's ears have perked after PSG set a €40m (£34m) asking price for Donnarumma, according to La Repubblica. With no extension agreed and financial terms unresolved, the club are open to selling him this summer. PSG are keen for the Italy international to stay, but he has reportedly been underwhelmed by the club's proposals so far. United boss Ruben Amorim is keen to bring in a new first-choice stopper, with the chance to sign Donnarumma too good to turn down. As well as winning the treble this season, he was also player of the tournament as Italy won Euro 2020. England fans will remember him for his heroics in the final at Wembley, which saw him save THREE penalties as Italy won. According to L'Equipe, the PSG goalkeeper has been vocal about the possibility of joining an English team during chats with his Italian team-mates. Former Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal launches scathing attack on old side while heaping praise on bitter rivals But Donnarumma has insisted he wants to stay at the Parc des Princes , despite reports. He said after Italy's 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Moldova: "My priority is to stay at PSG. "I don't think there will be problems with the negotiations." Donnarumma joined PSG five years ago from AC Milan on a free transfer, and has made 154 appearances in all competitions for the French champions. Manchester City are also interested in Donnarumma as they look for a long-term replacement for club legend Ederson, who turns 32 before the start of next season. United, meanwhile, have also been interested in Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez. 3

Claudio Ranieri rejects Italy manager job after Luciano Spalletti announces own sacking

Claudio Ranieri revealed he has turned down the vacant Italy manager's job after Luciano Spalletti was dismissed from his post. The 73-year-old, who famously guided Leicester City to a fairytale Premier League title in 2016, will stay on with AS Roma as their senior advisor. Former Napoli coach Spalletti, 66, announced his own dismissal on Sunday following Italy's 3-0 drubbing by Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier on Friday. Ranieri, who recently retired for a second time after his spell at Roma last season, said he was honoured to have been offered the job by Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina. "I thank President Gravina for the opportunity, a great honour, but I have reflected and decided to remain available to Roma in my new position totally," he told Italian news agency ANSA. "The Friedkins (Roma owners) gave me their full support and backing for whatever decision I had made regarding the national team but the decision is mine alone." Ranieri helped Roma finish fifth in Serie A last season to qualify for the Europa League. The Italian has been replaced by former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini at the Stadio Olimpico ahead of next season.

Former Wimbledon champions looks unrecogniseable as she dazzles at event in Italy five years after retiring from tennis

A former Wimbledon champion looked unrecogniseable at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Hotel II Pellicano in Monte Argentario, Italy, on Monday. The next Grand Slam on the tennis calendar gets underway on June 30, where Barbora Krejcikova will be looking to defend the women's singles title she won on Centre Court 12 months ago. But one of the more famous champions to grace the court is Russia's Maria Sharapova, who famously won the title in 2004 as a 17-year-old, when she beat Serena Williams in the final. The now-38-year-old went on to win all four Grand Slam titles - the French Open twice - before calling a day on her career five years ago. She has continued to focus on her investment portfolio since retiring, and attended Monday night's party alongside fiance Alex Gilkes and the likes of Michel Martone. Sharapova looked unrecigniseable from her playing days, donning long brown hair rather than her famous blone, while she dazzled in a see-through black top and long black trousers. Maria Sharapova retired from tennis in 2020 and has opted for a more natural look in her post-playing days The former Wimbledon champion rocketed to fame when she beat top seed and defending champion Williams 21 years ago to win her first Grand Slam at just 17. Since retiring in 2020, Sharapova has favoured a more natural look to her playing days and a number of fans have been in agreement, after a double take, on her social media profiles. During her storied time on court, Sharapova become the first Russian player to complete the career Grand Slam after wins in Melbourne, New York, Paris and London and the third-youngest woman to triumph at Wimbledon. But her career was marred by a 2016 failed drugs test, which saw Sharapova suspended for two years after she was found to have ingested meldonium, a substance which had been banned at the start of that year, ahead of the Australian Open. Her suspension was later reduced to 15 months after she was found to have taken the drug as per her doctor's advice, and Sharapova returned to competition in April 2017, and won the Tianjin Open seven months later. After struggling with chronic shoulder issues for a number of years, Sharapova announced her retirement in 2020, sharing an emotional goodbye message with her followers that spoke to her deep connection to the game. 'How do you leave behind the only life you've ever known?,' Sharapova wrote. 'How do you walk away from the courts you've trained on since you were a little girl, the game that you love - one which brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys - a sport where you found a family, along with fans who rallied behind you for more than 28 years? 'I'm new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis - I'm saying goodbye.'
