Indian Navy key to power projection and regional stability: Vice Admiral Deshmukh
He was speaking at the launch of Yard 3034 (Ajay), the eighth and last ship of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) of the Arnala class, indigenously designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).
The Vice-Admiral added that the geopolitical situation is rapidly changing, especially in the Indian Ocean region.
'As the global powers endeavour to assert themselves in this region, where 80% of the global trade flows, the Indian Navy needs to retain the stature of being the preferred security partner to the maritime threats that emerge and also the first responder in case of HADR (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief) missions,' Mr. Deshmukh said.
80% indigenisation
'Arnala class of ships will be important platforms for the Indian Navy in fleet operations. I am aware that over 80% of indigenisation has been achieved in building this advanced warship that is promoting the mission of self-reliant India in the present scenario where the supply chain disruptions have been a major cause of concern in the industries,' he said.
India is among a few countries that can design and build various types of warships and submarines, he said while mentioning that GRSE has progressed to become one of the premier defence shipyards of the country, having a unique distinction of building more than 110 warships.
The first ship of the Arnala class was commissioned on June 18, 2025 and delivery of the second ship is planned in August 2025. The warship will augment the Navy's underwater domain awareness, anti-submarine warfare and mine-laying capabilities.
GRSE chairman-cum-managing director Commodore (retd.) P.R. Hari said the ship 'Ajay' is one among 16 anti-submarine warfare shallow water vessels being built for the Navy by two shipyards — eight each by GRSE and a sister shipyard. 'With 16 warships under construction for the Indian Navy and many more orders for warships expected, I am confident of GRSE delivering a century of warships to Indian Navy within a decade.' Mr. Hari said.
In keeping with the naval tradition, Priya Deshmukh, wife of Mr. Deshmukh, launched the ship. Senior officials from the Indian Navy and GRSE were present for the event.

Navy Chief Admiral Tripathi embarks on visit to Japan
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi has embarked on a four-day visit to Japan with a focus on enhancing bilateral maritime cooperation in line with the 'special strategic and global partnership' between the two countries. Admiral Tripathi's visit from July 30 to August 2 is part of the ongoing efforts to consolidate bilateral defence relations between India and Japan, the Indian Navy said. He is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Defence Minister Nakatani Gen, Vice-Minister of Defence Masuda Kazuo and Admiral Saito Akira, the Chief of Staff of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). 'Discussions are expected to encompass a broad spectrum of defence cooperation areas, with particular emphasis on maritime security, technological collaboration, and identifying new avenues to strengthen naval synergy and interoperability," the Navy said. Admiral Tripathi will also visit JMSDF units and interact with the Commander-in-Chief of the Self Defence Fleet, at Funakoshi JMSDF base, it said. The Navy Chief's engagements in Japan are 'poised" to further deepen the bonds of friendship and defence cooperation, paving the way for enhanced mutual understanding in key areas of shared strategic and maritime interest, the Navy said in a statement. Naxal killed, three security personnel injured in Chhattisgarh encounter
Sukma, July 29 (PTI) A Naxalite was killed and three security personnel were injured in an IED blast during an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Tuesday, a police officer said. He said a joint team of security personnel on an anti-Naxal operation and Maoists exchanged fire in the forest along the Sukma-Dantewada inter-district border. The operation, involving personnel of the Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was launched on Monday based on inputs about the presence of Maoists in the area, said Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan. During the search of the encounter site, security personnel found the body of a male Naxalite along with a huge cache of arms, ammunition, and explosive materials. 'Three personnel belonging to DRG sustained injuries in a pressure IED blast during the operation. All injured personnel have been safely evacuated and are being referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment. Their condition is currently stable and out of danger," Chavan said. He said that as the operation is still underway, other details cannot be discussed. With the latest gunfight, 226 Naxalites have been killed in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh so far this year. Of them, 208 were eliminated in the Bastar division, which includes districts of Bijapur, Bastar, Kanker, Konadagaon, Narayanpur, Sukma, and Dantewada.
