$8000 filly earns shot at Stradbroke Handicap with Fred Best Classic win
The Stradbroke Handicap has its latest rags to riches fairytale … and she walks like a duck.
Three-year-old filly Spicy Martini, who was snapped up for a barely believable price of just $8000 as a yearling by Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds, surged into Queensland's most prestigious race by scoring the Fred Best Classic at Doomben on Wednesday.
Spicy Martini went through an online sale and was sold at a bargain-basement rate because of concerns over her X-rays, despite being a daughter of US champion Justify.

But Toby Edmonds backed his judgement and secured the filly for a fraction of Justify's $250,000 yearling sales average at the time.
Spicy Martini now has a shot at the $1.8m first prize of the Group 1 Stradbroke at Eagle Farm on Saturday week, with her win in the Fred Best earning her a golden ticket into Queensland's most prestigious race.
Edmonds has won the Stradbroke before, snaring his first Group 1 when Tyzone claimed the 2020 edition although that was a vastly different race with Covid restrictions playing their part.
Toby Edmonds trained the 2020 Stradbroke winner with his son Trent but now Toby and new training partner Stephen McLean have a shot at claiming Queensland racing's biggest prize.
Spicy Martini's Stradbroke odds were slashed from $101 to $21 after her Fred Best win and the filly will carry the featherweight of just 49.5kg.
Spicy Martini will need a new jockey with Craig Williams unable to make 49.5kg but that was the least of Edmonds' worries on Wednesday as he was overcome with emotion.
'If you have a look at her, she walks like a duck,' Edmonds said.
'She has quite a few issues and takes a lot of managing, but she is very quick.
'We found her online, a Justify filly, which we generally weren't able to buy because they were too dear, but this one just came up.
'This one was one that (breeding giants) Coolmore couldn't put through the sales.
'She is workmanlike, there's nothing flash about her at all.
'She is honest, she is in the Stradbroke now with 49.5 (kg) and I'm very keen to run her as long as she pulls up well.'
The Fred Best for three-year-olds was rescheduled from last Saturday when an Eagle Farm downpour and poor visibility caused several races to be called off.
Champion jockey Williams said the rescheduling of the race added to the stature of the win.
He predicted Spicy Martini would make her presence felt in the Stradbroke.

'Everyone that was in this race today had the challenge of being there last Saturday but coming back today,' Williams said.
'It's a great intuitive by Racing Queensland to have this race exempt from ballot from the Stradbroke.
'Toby and his team now have 10 days to get this filly to the Stradbroke in good form.
'Toby asked if I could ride at 49.5 (kg), I said I could have when I was 18 but I can't now.'
There had been strong late money for Spicy Martini in the Fred Best, backed from $15 into $10.
Bosustow, who won the Gold Coast Guineas by six lengths at his previous start, finished a disappointing sixth after appearing to have every chance.
Annabel and Rob Archibald's Queensland stable foreman Todd Pollard said there were no post-race issues found with the colt.
Bosustow eased from $9 to $21 in Stradbroke betting and now connections must decide whether to tackle the Stradbroke.
Exciting Lindsay Park galloper War Machine firmed even further as Stradbroke top pick on Wednesday without even racing, now a $3 favourite after starting the day at $4.

‘Looked like Mumbai': Geelong coach Chris Scott takes aim at SCG pitch
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. The SCG surface is again under fire, but this time for a 'rock-hard centre wicket' which 'looked like Mumbai', according to Geelong coach Chris Scott. The dual premiership coach was shown pre-game examining the turf, ahead of his side's 43-point win over Sydney, shaking his head in apparent frustration. It is a different part of the ground to the one which caused controversy earlier in the season, when the Paddington End was unstable and slippery, causing players to fall over during games. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. That problem was blamed on a pre-season Andrea Bocelli concert held at the SCG whereas this issue is related to the ground's decision not to use a drop-in pitch for cricket purposes. 'The actual surface looks beautiful. The rye grass is quite soft,' Scott explained. 'I know there's been a lot of rain up here, but it's the contrast between the quite soft area outside the centre square and then pretty rock-hard centre wicket area that's just not conducive to AFL football. And so the strange part with so much rain is that it's covered all the time, and you've got this baked, you know, it looked like (a) Mumbai (cricket pitch) out there. Chris Scott wasn't happy with the state of the SCG centre wicket turf. 'So that's, again, that's for them to work through. But I mean, my position would be, if you think that's optimal for AFL football, you don't understand what's optimal for AFL football. 'But again, not my concern really. Well, it was my concern today, but I wouldn't read too much into my body language, if there was someone filming me and I didn't know. 'Well, I guess it's my chance to explain it - I wasn't that worried. It was exactly what we expected. We rocked up here yesterday and the centre wicket's covered. 'Not sure there's having there's much point having a training session the day before when the pitch is covered. It's pretty much the reason we're here.' Trainer Mark Milton saddles up Miss Couver at Scone
Scone trainer Mark Milton will use Tuesday's home-town meeting at Scone to 'debut' the former Sydney-sider and 'internet cheapie' Miss Couver. Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Trainer, owner and breeder Mark Milton is hoping his 'internet speck' Miss Couver can win back her meagre purchase price and start building a bank to pay for a stallion partner some time this spring or the next when she steps out at Scone today. The daughter of Golden Slipper winner Vancouver was originally housed at Leilani Lodge with Anthony Cummings who trained Miss Couver's Group 1-winning 'uncles' Outback Prince and Hotel Grand. Her most recent three starts were under the Ciaron Maher banner, prior to being put out to tender. Enter Milton, the former Mudgee trainer now firmly ensconced at the nation's thoroughbred capital. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It was a bit of an afterthought to buy her when I was playing on the Inglis Digital,'' Milton said. 'I thought why not have a bid on this one? 'I only paid $3,500 for her which is not a lot when you consider what we are racing for. 'And she'd won at the provincials and had run a couple of placings at the metros and that.' Miss Couver's 13th and last run came on July 9 where she finished down the order in a Benchmark 72 at Canterbury. Her first assignment for Milton comes on Monday in the One Agency Scone Class 1 Handicap (1200m) with Kody Nestor to steer. 'I haven't done a real lot with her,'' Milton says. 'She hasn't had any hard gallops but she is certainly coming back in class a bit. 'She is a nice big, strong mare who came to me in good nick.' — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 10, 2023 • RICHARD CALLANDER: Racing's rumour mill trips up punters with Shenandoah shenanigans Given how well-bred Miss Couver is, Milton is seriously considering breeding from the genetically blessed mare. 'Everyone keeps telling me, even down at Ciaron's that she would make a lovely broodmare,'' Milton said. 'She is a really big scopey horse. If you send her to the right stallion, she should throw a cracking sort of a foal. 'It's up to her to win her service fee.' Milton, meanwhile, has found another ideal race for Flying Molly who has the opportunity to collect $15,000 if successful in the Arrowfield Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1100m). Born and bred at Kingstar Farm, just like 2021 Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside, Flying Molly turned six on August 1 yet has just five runs under her belt. In fact the time between her third and fourth starts was a staggering 86weeks, or 602days. 'I moved from Mudgee over to Scone and then there was a rigmarole to be able to train at Scone for a while so she just sat in the paddock and in no time at all, nearly two years had gone past,'' Milton explained. 'There was no injury problem or anything like that, it was just a change of location and the moving process and everything else.' The break has, it seems, worked wonders for Flying Molly who has posted back-to-back PBs at her two runs since her return to racing. Both were at Scone, one a closing third to the handy Kris Lees-trained galloper Herman Said. • Private Harry, Briasa step up Everest preparations with scintillating trial wins The other was a three-quarter-length second to the Rodney Northam-housed Nova Centauri who goes around in the last on Monday's Scone card. 'I am guessing this race is probably a bit harder looking at the prices on the TAB but she has been pretty consistent and a little bit green in her runs too but even though she is a little bit older, she doesn't have a lot of experience,'' Milton said. Flying Molly, a $10,000 Inglis weanling purchase in 2020, can lay a rare claim to boast a Golden Slipper winner hanging on her family tree. Her fifth dam, Light Of Peace, was the mother of 1987 Slipper hero, Star Watch. Nikita Tszyu fight: Fight week rocked by legal threats after mysterious press conference absence
Don't miss out on the headlines from Boxing/MMA. Followed categories will be added to My News. Michael Zerafa was mysteriously absent at Monday's press conference ahead of this Wednesday's pay-per-view card at the ICC Exhibition Centre in Sydney. Zerafa is due to fight American Mikey Dahlman in the co-main event of Nikita Tszyu's boxing return against Lulzim Ismaili, but wasn't present at the standard fight week presser at Moore Park on Monday afternoon. 'I have been informed that he won't be here, but I have been informed he'll be at the weigh in tomorrow,' said No Limit CEO George Rose. 'I was just informed not long ago before coming on air, but he will be coming to the weigh-ins tomorrow.' Zerafa later issued an incendiary statement claiming he had been told not to attend the press conference, and even threatened legal action. 'They went ahead and falsely told national TV and streaming audiences that I 'no showed',' Zerafa wrote on Instagram. 'That is not just dishonest it's defamation. Zerafa mysteriously didn't attend Monday's press conference. Picture: No Limit Boxing 'You cannot remove someone, then publicly shame them for not being there. 'That's a direct attack on my integrity, my professionalism, and my name. 'And that has real consequences. 'This attempt to damage my reputation is serious and it won't be ignored. 'Our legal team has now been contacted. Enough is enough.' Four years ago, Zerafa was scheduled to face Tim Tszyu on a No Limit card in Newcastle, but pulled out due to concerns around travelling interstate during Covid. Queensland's Stevie Spark was a late-notice call up then, but Rose said there were no concerns about ahead of Wednesday night. 'No, let's keep the ball rolling,' Rose dead-batted when asked if he had any worries about the co-main event. 'Mikey (Dahlman), he's got a really good energy, he's happy to be out here. 'I think he's a guy who can upset the plan too. The fight is happening.' Dahlman had a horror trip from his home in Illinois to Sydney, including 36 hours' worth of flight delays. He was eventually forced to rebook his own flights via Dubai to Australia, arriving late last week. 'It was unexpected, because I know Zerafa is a bad boy and a villain,' Dahlman said. 'We all lead different lives, and if he's got something going on, he's gotta answer those questions, not me. 'I've got a job to do. I'm not changing my game-plan just because he's not at a press conference.' Mikey Dahlman promises to cause a boilover against Zerafa. Picture: No Limit Boxing The laidback Dahlman, who arrived in Sydney with his fiancée, said he feels like a hometown fighter in Sydney. 'I was definitely expecting a much bigger hate crowd,' he laughed. 'I got much more support for sure, I love it. 'I'm here to win, I've got business to do and I think I can beat him.' If they both win on Wednesday, No Limit is expected to push for a domestic blockbuster between Nikita and Zerafa in December. Zerafa insists he isn't interested in a fight with the younger Tszyu brother though, and only has eyes on Tim. The impasse has apparently resulted in a breakdown between Zerafa and No Limit, contributing to 'The Pretty Boy's' press conference absence. No Limit and the Tszyu camp have been adamant for months that Zerafa must fight Nikita before any bout with Tim is possible. Nikita Tszyu is just focused on Lulzim Ismaili. Picture: No Limit Boxing 'The rivalry is between me and Tim, that's the one they should be going with,' Zerafa told Code Sports. 'I've got no beef with Nikita. 'They're making it out like I need them. I'm an opportunity for Tim to bounce back and for Nikita to make a name for himself. 'Realistically they need me, I don't need them.' Tim and Nikita Tszyu's manager, Glen Jennings immediately hosed down any thought of a fight between Zerafa and 'The Soul Taker'. 'He can be as adamant as he wants about fighting Tim, but you don't get everything you want in life,' Jennings told Code Sports. 'He also wants a $100,000 Bentley. 'Dream on. 'Tim Tszyu decides on who fights Tim Tszyu. 'Since Newcastle, Tim has stuck by his stance that he won't fight Michael Zerafa, and I stand by that. Brock Jarvis says he'll fight Nikita if Zerafa doesn't. Picture: No Limit Boxing 'Right now, there is an option that we'll consider, and that's Nikita. If he decides not to fight him, that's Michael dodging Nikita. 'Make no mistake about that. 'But if Michael wins on Wednesday night, we'll consider him fighting Nikita.' If Zerafa refuses to fight Nikita, and the impasse remains, Sydney boxer Brock Jarvis says he will gladly step in to face 'The Butcher'. 'I'll step in and fight Nikita, of course. I'm a fighter and I'm here to take on everything that's thrown my way,' Jarvis said. Originally published as Fight week rocked by legal threats after mysterious press conference absence
