Sioux City Public Museum unveils new jazzy exhibit
Shutter and Sound: The Jazz Photography of Bob Willoughby opens June 14 and will be on display until August 10. Bob Willoughby is best known for his pictures of film sets and actors, but he is also known to have taken musician photos.

Those musical images are what can be expected in the new exhibit. Willoughby has photographed some of the most well-known jazz artists, including, but not limited to, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, and Frank Sinatra. In the release, Brubeck said, '[Willoughby] had not only a good eye, but a keen ear, and seemed to know when to snap at an inspired moment.'
Willoughby's photographs are collected and in museums around the world, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to the Tate Modern in London. The release suggests that 'Shutter and Sound is as enduring as the music.'
The Sioux City Public Museum is in downtown Sioux City. Its hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and admission will be free. For more information, call 712-279-6174 or visit their website.

Ethel Cain Goes Quietly Into the Darkness
Folks have been talking about the dissolution of the album format for years now, as streaming culls out singles and embeds them in appropriately themed playlists. The experience of listening to an LP in order has become kind of a novelty for some – the cohesion of each song bleeding into the next has been scrapped, the intended story deferred. Ethel Cain (a.k.a. Hayden Anhedönia) doesn't make music for playlists — as evidenced, once more, by her sophomore LP, Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You. Like a sweet-voiced Stephen King, Anhedönia pens epics that unfold against pastoral scenes of God's Country where people try and fail to lacquer over the innate horrors of living. In many ways, she's almost more performance artist than musician, composing her 2021 EP, Inbred, in the basement of an old Indiana church, and conjuring the Southern Gothic saga of the fictional Ethel Cain, a character Anhedönia created for 2022's Preacher's Daughter. That album — which mingled Lana Del Rey moodiness with dashes of the club — followed Cain as she fled an abusive father, only to end up murdered and cannibalized. Like Anhedönia's previous releases, the record feels like a haunting — like you're trapped in a decaying house, listening to a ghost that will only rest when its story is finally told. (You can see, then, where we were going with the anti-playlist thing above). Yes, there's the single 'Fuck Me Eyes' — the liltingly bitter ode to the popular girl who the town paints a slut — but in essence, the record is more a wash of words and sweet sounds than a collection of singular songs. And what gorgeous words those are: 'pretty boy/Natural blood-stained blond,' ('Dust Bowl'), 'my honey's heart is blue and a second offbeat' ('Waco, Texas'), 'hold me, smell of mildew I wanna die in this room' ('Janie'). It's easy to get lost in the haze — to wander down the echoing corridors of lyrics and synths and strings. Still, Willoughby lacks the dynamism of its predecessor, the ecstatic neon highs and chilly basement lows. That makes sense, of course, in that this is the story of a first love, a small town, quieter horrors. Seen as a whole, though, that quietness can sometimes verge on monotony, songs running into the next with little to grab onto — like an evaporating phantom. Caerphilly promotion Brilliance Pro Wrestling made its return to Caerphilly Leisure Centre with Broken Empire, a history making sold-out event featuring WWE alumnus Eugene, new champions, returning names, and the next chapter in several ongoing rivalries. The night kicked off with a major announcement as Rayne Leverkusen introduced Harrison Bennett as her mystery tag partner. The two went on to defeat Act Two to become the first-ever Brilliance Pro Tag Team Champions. Adam Crater picked up a singles victory over Shane Hook in a competitive match that took an unexpected turn when Hook attempted to bend the rules, a rare move from the usually fair-fighting competitor, and one that cost him the win. WWE alumnus Eugene received a warm welcome from the crowd as he teamed with Soul Train in a six-man tag team match, earning a win over Bred 4 Better in one of the evening's lighter moments. Tensions rose in a Brilliance Country Rules tag match when Leon Brando and Kenny Mantra defeated James Ellis and Viktor Lindon, despite interference from VCW Champion Aaron Blanchard, who served as special guest referee. The controversial result prompted Ellis to lash out, firing and physically confronting referee Stu Waters. That incident has now led to the announcement of a high-stakes 4-on-4 Winner Takes All Elimination Match, set for November 30 at Caerphilly Leisure Centre. In other action, Big Van Wesker overcame veteran Luke Douglas in a physical, closely contested bout. The main event saw the surprise return of MJ Grayson, who answered Joseph Conners' open challenge after a year away from competition. In a shocking twist, Grayson aligned with James Ellis and left Caerphilly as the new Brilliance Pro Heavyweight Champion. With alliances shifting and tensions rising, all eyes now turn to November.
