‘Losing an old friend': Retired fighter pilot selling replica of P-40 Warhawk

Wayne Foster's smaller-scale replica of a P-40 Warhawk fighter plane is pictured in Indus, Alta., on Thursday, July 17, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh Wayne Foster spent much of his life chasing the horizon as a fighter pilot, but he could be facing his toughest battle yet: parting with the warbird he built by hand. At 88, Foster is selling one of his planes: a smaller-scale replica of a P-40 Warhawk with the Royal Air Force's 1940 Desert colours of the 112 Squadron. The asking price is $45,000. 'It's like losing an old friend,' he said, sitting in front of the plane stored inside a Quonset hut in Indus, Alta., a hamlet southeast of Calgary. Foster, who joined the Canadian Forces in 1956, served in the navy, spent three years in France and worked at an electronic warfare unit in Montreal for another four years. It was in the navy that he earned his nickname, Butch. 'I got the name Butch from Butcher, from dogfighting, I guess,' Foster said in an interview. 'We had a couple of guys in the squadron whose name was Wayne. I got Butch and my wingman got Chopper.' During his time, he said, they did a lot of dogfighting in Europe. Dogfighting is a series of tactical manoeuvres used in close-range aerial combat. 'I learned how to dogfight fairly well ... by trial and error,' he said. 'Thankfully, I could do a lot of errors when no one was shooting at me.' He also had a tour in Puerto Rico. He was transferred to the United States Air Force for three years, where he trained pilots on the art of dogfighting. 'That was a wonderful tour. I flew the T-38 Talon — it goes like hell,' he chuckled. He remembers briefly sharing the sky with Chuck Yeager, an American flying ace and record-setting test pilot who, in October 1947, became the first pilot in history confirmed to have exceeded the speed of sound. Foster said he tried to 'bounce' Yeager, an unexpected attack to initiate a dogfight. 'He was coming up from Spain in a 104 and I couldn't catch him,' Foster laughed. 'He was much faster than I was, but I got the opportunity to talk to him later on in Germany.' In selling his replica, Foster admits he never got to fly a real P-40 Warhawk. 'But I've flown the P-51s and it's very similar in some ways. It doesn't have a big honking engine on it, but fortunately, this one here doesn't have a big honking engine on it either,' he said. Mechanic Pieter Terblanche has been working on the Warhawk. 'It's in very good shape for the time it's been sitting,' he said. 'Everyone that buys a plane has their own idea on what needs to be done to the plane. It can be done pretty fast.' Foster's daughter Tracy said the plan was to have it placed in a museum, but there have been several people who expressed interest in buying it. Offers have been outlandish, she added. 'We've had a couple of crazy offers, like $500 and a case of beer, and I went nope. And then it was $5,000 and a case of beer,' she said. One person offered $200, she said, but it turned out he thought it was a model he could fly using a remote control. Her father has never spoken much about his time as a fighter pilot, she said. 'Now that he's getting a little older, he's opening up a little bit more as to what he experienced.' --Bill Graveland This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 20, 2025.

Montreal playwright and actor Harry Standjofski dies at 66

Montreal actor and playwright Harry Standjofski died this week at the age of 66, his agency has confirmed. Active on the Montreal stage since the early 1980s, he left his mark on the city's French and English theatre scenes, skillfully navigating between the two languages. "A great artist who leaves us much too soon at just 66 years of age. Our most sincere condolences to his loved ones," wrote Montreal's Théâtre Duceppe on its Facebook page. Standjofski has appeared in three productions on the theatre's stage: Une maison face au nord (2009-2010), Les chroniques de Saint-Léonard (2014-2015), and, most recently, Docteure (2023-2024). "A great man of the theater, as exceptional in Molière's language as in Shakespeare's ... He was also a formidable guitarist," added Théâtre Duceppe. The Union des artistes (UDA), an organization that represents musicians and other performers in the province, also offered its condolences to the family of the late artist. "His warm voice and unique presence left a mark on the audience," wrote the UDA on Facebook. Standjofski also took part in television and film projects and has even lent his voice to characters in cartoons and video games, including Assassin's Creed. Some of his recent stage roles at Montreal's oldest English-language theatre, Centaur Theatre, include Hellfire Pass and Don Quixote. And he played the role of Tom Cohen in Radio-Canada's French television series À Nous Deux. Since 1986, he has taught at Concordia University, for which he has directed many plays. In a Facebook publication, Montreal-based actor Terence Bowman says he joined the Narroway Theatre Troupe on Montreal's West Island at the age of 16 and performed in plays, all directed by the late playwright, between the ages of 16 and 20. Bowman said he was in a state of shock after hearing the news of his passing. He recalls that Standjofski wrote roles for the actors in the troupe based on their personalities "as he saw them." "Those scripts were surreal, poignant, offbeat and funny all at the same time," wrote Bowman. "Harry was something of a genius. He had a significant presence during some of the most pivotal years of my life. It seems like a million years ago and yesterday at the same time ... Over the years, I would often run into Harry at auditions, parties and even on set once in a while. He was always as charming and as energetic as ever."

Ontario refugee agencies host soccer tournament to build community and friendship

Social Sharing Refugees from all over the world came together for an annual soccer tournament in North York this Saturday organized as a way to help newcomers build connections in Canada, and take their minds off the stress of being in a new country. The tournament was put on by the Ontario Coalition of Service Providers for Refugee Claimants, a group of agencies and refugee housing services that are located in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), said, located in Toronto. Francisco Vidal, executive director of Sojourn House, which provides emergency shelter and transitional housing services to newly arrived refugees in the GTA, said the tournament "uses soccer as a tool to build community and promote healthy lifestyles." Participating in the matches also helps improve players' mental and physical health, he said. "Some of [the players] have not had their refugee claim hearing yet," he said. "This puts their mind away into something that can build community and friendship." Event an opportunity to share experiences Dany Abuela attended the tournament for the first time on Saturday. Abuela moved to Toronto from Ecuador in January with his family. They have been staying at Romero House, an organization that provides refugee claimants with transitional housing and immigration support. "We are happy. Canada is a great country," he said. "This event for us is very important because we can speak with the other people, know their experience." Tenzin Khentse moved to Canada from India in 2021 and now works at the FCJ Refugee Centre as a youth leader focused on preventing human trafficking. He said the event is a good distraction for those dealing with refugee and asylum procedures. "Football is something that everybody enjoys. It's something everybody can relate to, and it's a really good distraction, you just forget about your problems for a while," said Khentse. This year, Vidal said there has been "a lot of hype" around the tournament because of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — which will be hosted in Canada, U.S. and Mexico — as well as the story of Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies, who was born in a refugee camp in Ghana before he moved to Canada when he was five years old. Soccer team is like a 'new family in Canada' Some refugees living in refugee houses do not have family in Canada, said Diana Gallego, the co-executive director of the FCJ Refugee Centre, located in York. "To become a member of a soccer team, it's kind of [like] 'This is my new family in Canada,'" she said. Gallego said she fled Colombia 21 years ago with her husband and her son. Her son played in the tournament on Saturday. "When we are forced to leave our countries, we do it because our lives are at risk," she said. "To come here and to find an open home and somebody that can welcome you is really important." The coalition has organized five tournaments since 2018. This year marks the first time an agency from Hamilton participated in the tournament, as a way to engage with refugess outside the GTA, Vidal said.
