Lucknow: The UP Special Task Force (STF) on Sunday arrested two members of a
cyber fraud
gang near Ekana Stadium for extorting Rs 1.29 crore from a retired scientist by subjecting him to a three-day-long 'digital arrest' while posing as CBI officers.
The arrested accused have been identified as Pradeep Kumar Singh (50), a native of Ayodhya currently residing in Sector 6C, Vrindavan Yojna, and running Narayani Infra Developers Pvt Ltd; and Mahfooz (21), a resident of Nabeullah Road, Wazirganj, who was arrested near Faizabad Road.
According to police, the victim, Shukdev Nandi, a retired scientist from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, was contacted via WhatsApp by gang members impersonating CBI officials.
Using fear and intimidation, they digitally confined him and forced him to transfer Rs 1.29 crore into various accounts over three days.
The victim lodged a complaint at the Bareilly cyber police station on June 26, leading to an FIR under Sections 318(4), 319(2), 308(6), 61(2), and 111 of the BNS, along with Section 66D of the IT Act. The initial investigation by Bareilly Police identified Pradeep as a key accused. Four members of the gang were arrested on July 5.
Both accused have been handed over to the local police for further legal action.

Parnjal Sharma and Anshuman Tiwari, two of the accused arrested in MP, confessed during police remand that Vishnu Kharola from Jodhpur had handed them Rs 1.30 lakh to give to the main shooters, who have been on the run after the shootout. They said they had handed over Rs 1.10 lakh to the shooters on their way to Ujjain, while the remaining Rs 20,000 was spent on buying some other items and food for them. Police sources said Shakti and the other shooters have fled to MP where they are hiding in some undisclosed location. Vishnu Kharola, whose name came up during the remand, is reportedly said to be a partner of Lawrence Bishnoi-led gang and is handling and managing things on his behalf. Police produced Pranjal and Anshuman, who are from Lal Ghati in MP's Shajapur district, in court again Saturday after the end of their two-day remand. The court has extended it by two more days. Police are trying to ascertain the exact location of the shooters from the two.

Considering the seriousness of the matter, higher authorities were informed about the incident. Chittorgarh SP Sudhir Joshi stated that in the case of teacher Shambhulal Dhakad from Anwalkheda School engaging in inappropriate behavior with children, the victim's family submitted a written report on the spot. Consequently, Begu police station registered a case under various sections of the IPC, IT Act, POCSO Act, and SC/ST Act, leading to the arrest of the accused, Shambhulal, son of Gheesalal Dhakad, a resident of Turkadi, Begu police station.

Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday (July 19, 2025) said it arrested 10 individuals from six States involved in a large-scale illegal religious conversion racket. The arrests were made from Rajasthan, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Goa apart from U.P. 'The probe began in Agra in March after two sisters aged 18 and 33 were reported missing. Investigations revealed that they were allegedly coerced into religious conversion and were undergoing radicalization. One of the sisters had also put a picture of a girl holding an AK 47 rifle as her profile picture on a social media platform. Preliminary investigations found that the sisters were targeted by a gang involved in 'love jihad' and radicalization,' said Agra Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar. He added evidence of the racket receiving funding originating from America and Canada is also noticed during investigation,'. 'The arrested individuals activities included receiving illicit funds, providing safe houses for covert operations, offering legal advice, and providing other forms of assistance to facilitate the conversions and radicalization,' added the police. In light of multi State and transnational imprints of the racket dedicated units of the State police, including the Special Task Force (STF) and the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), are deployed to assist with the ongoing investigation. 'This action is part of 'Mission Asmita', an ongoing initiative aimed at dismantling such illicit syndicates,' added the U.P. police. Mission Asmita, is a dedicate initiative of U.P. police to take on criminals involved in serious offenses such as illegal conversions, radicalization, love jihad and deliberate attempts to undermine national security with the help of transnational network.
