Electric truck enthusiasts have a new special edition model to lust after. Following last week's teaser campaign, Rivian has just released the first unique R1S and R1T variants since the Launch Edition models arrived back in 2022. Known as the Rivian R1 California Dune Edition, these trucks come ready for your next adventure to Johnson Valley or Glamis.
Whether you pick an R1S or an R1T as your base, every California Dune Edition model will feature the brand's tri-motor layout, which provides 850 horsepower and 1,103 lb-ft of torque. The special models also come equipped with the All-Terrain Package equipment, including underbody skid plates, a full-size spare, and a set of range-reducing all-terrain tires wrapped around the unique 20-inch wheels.
Customers will have a choice between two new finishes on those wheels, including a dark hue or a body-matched set in the new California Dune paint. The latter is a particularly handsome combo out on the move. Additional bonus hardware includes a set of MaxTrax recovery boards in a dark finish, a powered tonneau cover for the pickups, and dark-hued crossbars up top.
The special edition model also adopts the new two-tone Sandstone interior, which pairs nicely with the dark trim included on all tri-motor vehicles. Given the off-road intentions of this new model, Rivian has also included a set of easy-to-clean mats for the interior. And like all second-gen R1 models, the special editions benefit from reworked infotainment and advanced driver-assistance tech.
'The design team was inspired by the color and warmth of the beautiful, sun-drenched dunes of Southern California to create our first bespoke, limited-edition variant of the R1 vehicles,' said Jeff Hammoud, Rivian's chief design officer. 'In this unique expression, we embraced the balance between the vast, quiet terrain of the California dunes and the desire to create something that is both elevated and refined. It invites you to submit to the elements while offering colors and materials that are easy to clean but look just as good when they aren't.'
The trucks are slated to have a public appearance at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, from March 6 to 17. Units will also be available to view at select Rivan Spaces throughout the country. The pickup models are slated to start at $99,000, while the SUV is a bit more expensive, kicking off at $105,900. Order books for the electric off-road trucks are open now.

Rivian Signals It Wants to Move Even More Upscale

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The immediate future of Rivian relies heavily on lower-cost electric vehicles than the R1S SUV and R1T truck of today. But, a more luxurious Rivian is on the horizon, a company spokesperson told Newsweek at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. The new Rivian R2 SUV is coming to market later this year, expected to be priced to start at less than $50,000. The smaller R3 SUV will arrive after R2 and is expected to cost even less. Clues about the future of Rivian's flagship models are hiding in plain sight. The company has released more powerful and pricier versions of the R1T (starting MSRP $70,990) and R1S ($76,990) since its debut. They now top out well over $110,000 when all the options boxes are checked. At The Quail, the company showed the R1S Quad Pebble Beach, which was auctioned off earlier in the week at the Broad Arrow Monterey Jet Center Auction for $175,000, $45,000 more than its auction estimate. Proceeds from the auction benefited the WaterAid and #TeamWater charities. Rivian R1S Quad Pebble Beach pictured on the Monterey Peninsula. Rivian R1S Quad Pebble Beach pictured on the Monterey Peninsula. Rivian The SUV was exclusively commissioned by the company for the auction. It's a study in bespoke materials, paint and processes. The car is coated in a Monterey Silver paint finish, a seven-step process that required the company to paint the body in white the color black before adding shimmering green-gold hues and clear coat. A traditional R1S features a two-step paint process. Its wheels are a bespoke, two-tone, hand-painted finish. "These wheels were specifically designed for this truck," Jeff Hammoud, Rivian's chief design officer, told Newsweek, noting that it's very difficult in a mass production process to create a similar effect. The elegance of the exterior is accentuated by a colorful and hand-crafted interior, much of which was inspired by the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Floor mats that are hand-dyed using paint spray feature a blue-to-orange ombre look, which carries over to the speaker housings and other gear and button surrounds. "This was actually hand-stained by my team," Hammound said, pointing to the mats, explaining that it took many trials to figure out just the right way to apply the coloring. The Pebble Beach project started in April. Noting the time it takes to create a single bespoke model, Hammound said that the goal of the team is to do one per year, at least for now. "We love this car. We like the interior colors. We love the exterior color... It gets the customers excited about a new color space that maybe we wouldn't have tried had we had to think about mass production," he said. "Being able to try something a little bit different and not worrying about exactly selling 1000s of these gives us the courage to maybe try something we wouldn't necessarily do." But, don't look for Rivian to get into bespoke commissions much further anytime soon. "We really try to focus more on curated color and material trends. A lot of brands really lean into customization. But for us being a direct-to-consumer brand, you want people to be able to go on our website [and] really easily understand the product... People absolutely love to be able to go in and customize every single detail," the design chief said. "But for us, we're always trying to find that balance between giving customer choice [and] making sure that we're making it easy for the customer to understand and giving them what they want... In terms of us having some crazy configurator that you can customize every detail, that's not something that we want to do," he continued.

RIVN and Tesla, Inc. TSLA. Rivian's shares have lost 10.7%, while Tesla's shares have returned 0.6%. One-Month Price Return Performance Image Source: Zacks Investment Research LCID's Q2 Results Lucid reported a quarterly loss of 28 cents per share in the second quarter of 2025, narrower than the loss of 29 cents per share incurred in the year-ago period. It posted revenues of $259.4 million in the quarter, which rose from $201 million posted in the year-ago automaker delivered 3,309 vehicles in the second quarter of 2025, which rose 38% year over year, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of record deliveries. However, in the second quarter of 2025, Lucid's rivals, Rivian and Tesla, reported a year-over-year decline in deliveries. Rivian delivered 10,661 vehicles, down from 13,790 units in the same period last year, marking two consecutive quarters of year-over-year decline, while Tesla recorded a 13.4% decline in deliveries. Factors Favoring Lucid's Outlook Lucid expects deliveries to ramp up throughout 2027, driven by the production of the midsize platform scheduled to begin in late 2026. The midsize platform, which is designed to underpin a more affordable line of vehicles compared to its luxury-centric models like the Air and Gravity, presents a key opportunity for the company to expand its addressable market. The company is actively pursuing partnerships that go beyond selling or licensing its leading EV technology. On July 17, the company announced a major collaboration with Uber Technologies, Inc. UBER and Nuro to develop a next-generation premium robotaxi for Uber's ride-hailing platform. The project combines Lucid Gravity's advanced software-defined vehicle architecture, Nuro's proven Level 4 autonomous driving system, and Uber's global network and fleet management to create a fully integrated service designed for comfort, safety and scalability. Per the deal, Uber will invest $300 million in Lucid, which is subject to regulatory approval, and deploy at least 20,000 Lucid Gravity vehicles with Nuro autonomy over six years in multiple global markets, starting late next LCID reaffirmed its commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing to counter the tariff impact and other geopolitical issues. For instance, a couple of months back, it announced a preliminary agreement with Graphite One to source natural and synthetic graphite domestically starting in 2028, which complemented its existing nonbinding supply agreement signed in April 2024. Lucid has also partnered with Alaska Energy Metals, Electric Metals USA and RecycLiCo to enhance its supply chain. The company will obtain nickel from Alaska Energy Metals to boost vehicle range, extend battery life and reduce dependence on metals like cobalt. Manganese from Electric Metals will support the development of long-range, high-performance EVs while maintaining battery and passenger safety. Collaboration with RecycLiCo, a critical minerals refining firm, will aid Lucid's energy storage efforts, promote responsible supply chains and advance the push for increased domestic sourcing of essential materials. LCID's Valuation & Estimates From a valuation standpoint, Lucid appears relatively overvalued. The stock trades at a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 2.89, above the industry's 2.68. Image Source: Zacks Investment ResearchThe Zacks Consensus Estimate for LCID's 2025 sales and earnings indicates year-over-year growth of 67.8% and 25.6%, respectively. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 and 2026 EPS has moved down a penny each in the past 30 days. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Should You Buy the Stock Now? Despite all the positives, its stretched balance sheet and lowered output forecast are raising concerns. As of June 30, 2025, Lucid had long-term debt of $2.04 billion, which rose from $2 billion as of Dec. 31, 2024. Its long-term debt to capital ratio is 0.63, higher than the industry's 0.4. The company lowered its annual production forecast for 2025 from 20,000 units to a range of 18,000-20,000 units amid tariff-related headwind. Also, despite significant cost-cutting and supply chain adjustments, the company still expects tariff-related headwinds to hurt full-year 2025 profit margins. Given this mix of factors, new investors shouldn't rush into buying shares; existing shareholders might retain their holdings. LCID carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) at present.
