My time with Kim Woodburn proved her gay icon status
Whatever you might say about Kim Woodburn, one thing is certain, she was always true to her word and lived life her way.
Woodburn died at the age of 83 yesterday following a 'short illness', leaving behind one of the most unique legacies in showbiz.
Calling Woodburn a 'reality TV icon' doesn't do her justice; she was something so much greater – especially to the LGBTQ+ community.
I briefly worked with Woodburn when she became Metro's I'm A Celebrity columnist in 2022. There was absolutely no one else I wanted for that column; if she didn't do it then it simply shouldn't go ahead.

Few celebrities are as unfiltered as Woodburn and even fewer want to come across unfiltered in their columns.
There was more than one occasion when we could not run her exact words without the threat of legal complaints, and I remember her insisting to my reporter that every scathing word that came out of her mouth made it into print.
As an editor, that's exactly what you want. She was simply brilliant and a rarity in entertainment now, which is so cautious and dry, its golden years are so far behind us.
I'll truly miss Kim Woodburn. She was the most badly behaved class act I've ever come across and the gay community hasn't just lost a meme-queen, it's lost a true ally. This is especially true when fearless voices such as hers are becoming increasingly hard to come by.
My admiration of this national treasure began 22 years ago when How Clean Is Your House launched. I was 15 at the time and would do anything to avoid housework (I'm still the same) but Woodburn was unlike anything I'd ever seen on television before.
Reality TV in its inception was sexy, fun, and scandalous – it wasn't two women cleaning poo from the bottom of a loo.
More than 22 years since How Clean is Your House launched, fascination in Woodburn never died. But it was when she was snapped up for I'm A Celebrity in 2009 that a star – and gay icon – was really born.
She was exceptional. She was a drag queen in jungle gear; rarely would her conversation not turn to 'bonking', and if she wasn't talking about sex she was scolding her sexless campmates.
She came second that year, losing out to Gino D'Acampo, but that didn't matter. She'd become a TV giant in her own right.
And when it seemed her brightest days on television were behind her, she was about to become a true national treasure after she single-handedly became the most disruptive Celebrity Big Brother housemate of all-time.
Her relationship with the LGBTQ+ community was an unlikely marriage, but one that has genuinely enhanced the lives of so many gay people I know since she erupted at everyone and everything in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
I have no doubt she was impossible to live with, but as a viewer, she was impossible to miss. She was camper than anyone I've ever known.
For context, Woodburn had to be removed from the house temporarily when a row broke out over who had the toughest life to-date. You could disagree with Woodburn on the correct way to eat a chocolate digestive and seconds later security would be called in.
Eventually, it got so out of hand that while being dragged out of the house by guards, she told footballer Jamie O'Hara: 'I wouldn't s**t on you if you were on fire… You're an adulterer that two-timed your wife and she's got three kids!'
Once she was embraced by the LGBTQ+ community with open arms, she embraced them back – proud in her allyship and making numerous appearances in queer spaces – and who could possibly want fighting your corner more than Kim Woodburn?

If you've seen the moment she was set up on Loose Women for a 'reconciliation' with Coleen Nolan and took on the entire panel without breaking a sweat, you'll see what I mean.
Even if she had the delivery of a bull in a china shop, she always stood by her convictions and, for me, that's what integrity is all about.
Right now, seeing that same level of integrity is becoming increasingly rare. Celebrities and politicians who once gave LGBTQ+ people their word that they'd always have our backs, marched with us at Pride or declared 'trans right are human rights' are now too scared to stand by us.
She may not have always got it right, like appearing on GB News to discuss same-sex changing rooms and declaring 'a man's a man' and a 'woman's a woman'. Of course, this wasn't a great move and she was – quite rightly – called out for it at the time.
I do honestly hand in heart know that she would not have intended to upset the LGBTQ+ community and knowing that she had would break her heart.
She responded to critics: 'I will always be an ally to the community and would never say a bad word about any of you. I am very disappointed in those who have deliberately misinterpreted what I said. You are horrible horrible people.' More Trending
Her impact on pop culture, particularly gay pop culture, is practically unrivalled when it comes to reality television in the UK. There isn't a day that goes by when I don't see a Kim Woodburn clip being thrown around social media.
That impact was best celebrated on the very first series of Drag Race UK by its eventual winner The Vivienne. Viv did an impression of Woodburn for RuPaul and was a stroke of genius, capturing every single inch of Woodburn's unapologetically ferocious charm with impeccable precision.
Viv died at the beginning of this year, with Woodburn among the many mourners at their funeral. She may not have been someone you wanted to cross, but she too was the first person to laugh at her absurdity.
I hope, and know, wherever she is now she's giving some 'chicken-livered s**t' what for and I am gutted we're not there to watch it happen.

Breathtaking new film 'that needs to be seen' quietly added to Netflix
Netflix has quietly dropped a brand-new thriller described as 'harrowing' and 'riveting', and with prestigious talent involved, on its streaming platform. With surprisingly little fanfare after the keen attention on previous other Netflix Friday film releases including highly anticipated sequel Happy Gilmore 2 and rom-com obsession My Oxford Year, Night Always Comes has arrived. Caron has cited the Safdie brothers' Uncut Gems and Good Time as an influence on his film's 'breakneck momentum' according to The Guardian. Fans have expressed their excitement over watching the film this evening, with Merlin commenting on X of Kirby's performance: 'Back with a bang.' 'High stakes and Vanessa Kirby? Count me in,' added another fan. 'If the trailer has me stressed, I can't imagine the full movie,' admitted @RolandNorbertB. With reviews just starting to trickle in on its first day available on Netflix, Night Always Comes currently sits on a fresh score of 60% according to critical reactions on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. While that might be on the lower side, there are only 15 reviews uploaded there at the time of publication, which is too few for a proper consensus, and no fan reactions as of yet. 'Vanessa Kirby commands the screen in a harrowing spiral of bad choices, delivering a performance as riveting as the story is nightmarish,' praised critic Joseph Robinson of Night Always Comes, while CBR admired Oscar nominee Kirby's 'powerhouse performance'. Heaven of Horror's Karina Adelgaard went further, sharing: 'Vanessa Kirby delivers a portrayal that is nuanced, heartbreaking, intense, and absolutely breathtaking.' Meanwhile, Collider insisted Night Always Comes was 'a film that needs to be seen'. 'A decent ticking-clock thriller that relies on its amusingly sleazy underworld and a barrage of strong performances to carry its occasionally flimsy and on-the-nose storytelling,' wrote Film Feeder's Jack Martin, while The Hollywood Reporter observed: 'Netflix's Night Always Comes is more compelling than the average original streaming movie even if it could use an extra shot of emotional power.' Critic Ben Sears also highlighted the lack of publicity for Netflix's latest film, noting that it 'rises above' most of the streamer's other original movies and 'deserves more than being unceremoniously dumped on the platform'. More Trending Others weren't quite as convinced though, with IndieWire's Kate Erbland penning: 'Handsomely made but tediously plotted, Kirby is more than deserving of this kind of meaty, she's-in-every-frame role, but Night Always Comes sunsets long before we get there.' Other new releases this week included controversial adult animation Fixed, which has shocked viewers with its explicit scenes and 'raunchy dog' niche genre, while fans globally are also still lapping up pop culture sensation KPop Demon Hunters. This film recently catapulted into the most-watched list of films ever on Netflix, claiming second place with 184.6million views after just eight weeks on the platform. Inside Katie Price and Peter Andre's bitter 16-year feud and comments that pushed star to explode as exes go to war
FROM reality TV sweethearts to bitter legal battles, Katie Price and Peter Andre's war of words has spanned 16 years. They were Britain's golden couple - marrying in 2005 at Highclere Castle, welcoming two children, Junior and Princess, and sharing their life with the public. But since their 2009 split, the pair have been locked in one of the most public celebrity feuds of the past two decades. Last night Peter hit out at his ex's "lies" in a shock social media rant, after remaining mostly silent on the feud for more than a decade. Peter, 52, issued a scathing statement rejecting Katie's call for a truce — and making explosive claims about their past. Katie broke her silence and hit back, declaring she 'will no longer be gaslighted and bullied' and that the issue is 'now in her lawyers' hands.' Peter Andre's statement in full Peter hit back after Katie's claims on her recent podcast that she was being frozen out of Princess's career - despite Princess living with her. Peter wrote on Instagram: "For sixteen years I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silence has been incredibly frustrating. "That ends today. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. "For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. "In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before out of respect for my children." "In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. "The same falsehoods are being repeated today." "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." His statement came just hours after Katie claimed that Princess was living with her on her latest podcast. She said: "I've missed out so much with Princess. I haven't watched the show, but, people have told me how proud I should be of the kids and how they Princess does talk highly of me all the way through it so although I'm not in the show she speaks about me all the time which is really sweet. "But why wouldn't she, because she lives with me. And this is another thing I need to clear up, the kids have never lived just with Pete, we've shared the kids." Here's how the feud unfolded over the years. Libel damages (2011) Two years after their split Katie issued a public apology after accusing Peter of cheating and faking his feelings during their marriage. He had begun defamation proceedings in 2009 over remarks she made to Heat magazine and on The Graham Norton Show. Katie was ordered to pay 'substantial' damages, which Peter's solicitor confirmed would go into a trust fund for Katie's eldest son, Harvey Price. Calling Emily Andre 'disgusting' (2022) In early 2022, Katie launched an Instagram tirade against Peter's wife, Dr Emily Andre, before quickly deleting the post. She shared Emily's magazine cover shoot and branded her a 'disgusting person', writing: 'My mouth has been shut for so long but I've had enough of people selling stories on me and particularly this so called woman @dr_emily_official. 'Always said I don't want to be famous yet doesn't do too bad to stay away from media and TV and now trying to make a career out of it. Branding Pete 'a nobody' (2024) Appearing on the podcast Anything Goes with James English last year, Katie claimed Peter 'was no one before he went in the jungle'. She added: 'When we did jobs together I'd always get more money, make sure we had separate contracts. 'I think he found that a bit hard as well. I was like well hang on you've just turned up in the jungle, I've already got a career going on. You had a song like, how many years ago? you need to earn it. this is the truth, I don't care what anyone says I made Pete again. Strictly's La Voix is already getting hate – and the reason is depressing
Finally, Strictly Come Dancing has its first drag queen contestant in a regular season – La Voix. Real name Chris Dennis, the 45-year-old Drag Race star is reality TV royalty and the perfect choice to throw the first heel and wig through the glass ceiling of Strictly. She competed on RuPaul's Drag Race UK just last year, but has long been an icon in the community — easily one of the most well-known queens in the country. Unfortunately, the predictable hate she's received just for being her loud and proud self is a sign of the awful times we live in now. I truly hope it doesn't get to her, and that she can make history on the BBC's flagship entertainment show. I was familiar with La Voix before Drag Race. She'd competed on Britain's Got Talent in 2014, reaching the semi-finals with the London Gay Band — long before drag was as popular in the UK as it is now. Even without the platform that is Drag Race, she still managed to land big TV gigs on WOW's Queen of the Universe and ITV's Queens For The Night. But I didn't truly know her until Drag Race. I knew the name, but I didn't know the full extent of the talent. To say she was robbed of winning her series feels unfair – given the innovation and brilliant mind of champion Kyran Thrax — but La Voix was one of the best queens Drag Race has ever seen, on either side of the Atlantic. She's going to bowl Strictly fans over, if not with her moves, then with her soft heart and. La Voix is a triple-threat performer — dancer, singer, and actor — and has the sharpest humour of anyone who's taken to the BBC ballroom. But the importance of her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing can't be underestimated, even if it feels long overdue. In 2019, Courtney Act made history as the first ever drag queen on Australia's version of Strictly, called Dancing with the Stars. Unsurprisingly to anyone who watched her on Drag Race, she was sensational and an enormous hit with viewers, finishing in second place with her partner Joshua Keefe. It wasn't until a year later that Strictly welcomed its first same-sex couple, Nicola Adams and Katya Jones, then John Whaite and Johannes Radebe the year after that. Then on Christmas Day last year, Drag Race's Tayce competed in the show's annual one-off special. Not only was she absolutely sensational — she won. The latter is watched by so many more viewers and their names become fixed in people's homes for months. If there hadn't been a drag queen in this series, it would have felt like a kick in the teeth. It's a shame Tayce wasn't invited back — not only for the viewers' benefit, but because she clearly deserved it too. But thank god for La Voix, who will be the perfect representative of the drag community — a queen who was destined for Saturday night telly. And it's needed now more than ever. The drag community has been under attack for years. As soon as the culture started to become mainstream – through drag brunches and drag queen story time – it was deemed a threat to society. It's a heartbreaking battle and it's nowhere near over. Earlier this month, two drag queens were escorted out of a library by police because the overbearing chants of protesters won. Lady Portia Di'Monte — known as 'Northern Ireland's First Lady of Drag' — and Miss Dora Belle were booked by the library to read to children. Many parents would have taken their children specifically for drag story time, and I have no doubt their kids loved every second of it. But no matter how harmless — even beautiful — drag proves itself to be, its protesters seem to win more and more. Northern Ireland's Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons, later said the event was 'not appropriate for children' and 'should not have taken place'. The queens were reading The Chronicles of Narnia and Dear Zoo, yet they were treated as though they were performing explicit excerpts from gay erotica. I don't think any of the comments on the BBC's announcement are worth repeating — we've heard them time and time again — but they were devastatingly predictable. I'm thrilled the BBC is making a statement with this line-up — that it won't bow down to the loud minority who complain week after week, pitchforks sharpened, that La Voix has no right to be on its biggest show. A show that is camp as Christmas and celebrates diversity more than any other. But I hate that it's still a statement at all. I'm so tired of the LGBTQ+ community — particularly the drag and trans community — being a statement simply by existing. More Trending I hate that the response to La Voix taking part in a dance contest was so predictable. Thank god she has the resilience of a warrior. Perhaps if Strictly Come Dancing had welcomed a drag queen to the stage sooner, there would be many viewers who haven't experienced the joy of drag that might have been won over by now. Six years behind its Australian counterpart feels like a long time, but at least it is time.
