Drug prices: private health facilities begin updating, preparing price lists

KUALA LUMPUR: Compliance with the Medicine Price Display Order is showing positive progress, with many private healthcare facilities in the capital and several states beginning to adopt the government's initiative.
Bernama checks in Kuala Lumpur and states found that healthcare facilities and pharmacies are in the process of preparing price lists for medicines, although they require some time to implement the measure.
In Kuala Lumpur, Dr Theiva Amirta of Peters Polyclinic and Surgery said the clinic is working on a medicine price list but needs more time to update it before it can be displayed publicly.
'We don't always buy the same medicines. Sometimes when a particular supply runs out, we have to get a different one of higher quality. So we need to continuously update the price list,' she told Bernama today.
She also suggested that enforcement of the regulation, which came into effect on May 1, be placed under the Ministry of Health (MOH), which has a better understanding of the medical field.
Natasha Adila, a staff member at Asia Clinic, said the clinic needs time to display medicine prices, adding that the move helps patients make comparisons, though it may have a slightly negative impact on private clinics.
In Perlis, a pharmacy worker who only wished to be known as Su, 34, said her pharmacy has already implemented price displays to help customers make informed choices before purchasing the medicine they need.
'We've put price tags on the medicines so customers can see for themselves and make decisions based on their affordability. This definitely helps them,' she said.
The initiative was also welcomed by 60-year-old grandmother of eight, Salhah Ismail from Sabah, who said the move is a great help in planning her medication expenses.
In Kelantan, retired civil servant Abidin Abdullah, 65, noted that with medical costs rising, the government's initiative is very helpful, especially for middle- and lower-income groups seeking affordable medication.
The initiative to display medicine prices at private healthcare facilities and community pharmacies took effect on May 1, in line with the MADANI Government's commitment to price transparency through the Medicine Price Transparency Mechanism (MKHU).
This implementation ensures that the public can make informed choices by knowing, comparing and selecting the best prices when planning their medicine expenses.

Kuwait reports 13 deaths from alcohol poisoning

KUWAIT CITY, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait's Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that 13 people have died from poisoning caused by locally produced alcohol. In a statement posted on social media platform X, the ministry said that since Saturday it had handled 63 cases of alcohol poisoning resulting from drinks contaminated with methanol. The ministry explained that the cases varied in severity of symptoms, with several requiring admission to intensive care units. Thirty-one cases required the use of ventilators, while 51 cases required urgent kidney dialysis sessions. Twenty-one cases suffered permanent blindness or impaired vision. The infections have so far resulted in 13 deaths, the statement said. "All the poisoned individuals are of Asian nationalities." The ministry added that it continues to monitor all cases around the clock and coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure necessary medical care, urging the public to immediately report any suspected poisoning cases to hospitals or designated hotlines. A security source told Kuwait's Al-Rai newspaper that "a security team was formed to track the cases, and it was found that all victims had purchased locally produced alcoholic beverages from some Asian individuals in the Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh area of Farwaniya Governorate." According to the report, 10 people were arrested during raids on the suspected locations. Alcohol is banned in Kuwait, and its law prohibits the import and supply of intoxicating substances. Anyone who imports or manufactures alcohol for commercial purposes is subject to imprisonment in the country.

MOH boosts staff and upgrades Lahad Datu Hospital for better healthcare

LAHAD DATU: The Ministry of Health (MOH) will increase manpower and conduct urgent infrastructure repairs at Lahad Datu Hospital to improve service delivery and patient safety. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that the hospital, classified as a minor specialist facility with 13 areas of expertise, needs additional staff to meet operational demands. 'We have identified 13 medical officers for the first phase of deployment, with seven more to follow in the second phase,' he told reporters during a working visit. Dr Dzulkefly highlighted critical upgrades, including overdue repairs to the Labour Ward, scheduled under Rolling Plan 1 of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'I have personally observed structural cracks in the Labour Ward that have persisted for years. This is a safety issue that cannot be compromised,' he said. He added that outdated facilities will also be refurbished as a priority. The visit is part of his three-day inspection tour of 22 healthcare facilities across six districts in Sabah, ending tomorrow. - Bernama

The procedure was carried out last Monday on a two-year-old boy from Indonesia by Prince Court Consultant Urologist Dr Roger Anthony Idi, in collaboration with Professor Imran Mushtaq, Consultant Paediatric Urologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. Bladder exstrophy is a rare congenital condition affecting approximately one in 40,000 births, in which the bladder develops outside the body. 'This condition can be detected through antenatal scans, enabling early consultation and surgical planning,' Dr Roger said at a press conference today. Treatment is typically staged, beginning with primary bladder closure shortly after birth, followed by the Kelly Procedure between the ages of two and three. The Kelly Procedure reconstructs the bladder neck using the child's muscle and soft tissue to create a functional sphincter, the muscle that holds in urine, providing improved bladder control. 'It also enhances genital appearance and offers the highest continence rates compared to other surgical approaches,' he said. Without the second-stage surgery, many children remain incontinent into adolescence and adulthood, facing social, psychological and even sexual health challenges. 'They may withdraw socially, struggle with self-esteem, and face long-term quality of life issues,' he added.
