GOF nabs 71 for illegal entry along Kelantan–Thai border

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) has arrested 71 people for entering the country illegally through unauthorised routes along the Kelantan–Thai border.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the arrests were recorded between Jan 1 and July 14 this year.
He said those detained comprised 54 men and 17 women, including both locals and foreigners.
"Since January, the GOF has recorded 42 cases of illegal border crossings, resulting in the arrest of 71 people.
"The majority of these cases were recorded in the Rantau Panjang area," he said.
He said the suspects were detained under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for illegal entry into Malaysia.
"These arrests reflect our ongoing commitment to curbing cross-border crime and safeguarding the country's sovereignty," he said.
Nik Ros Azhan said the GOF would continue to strengthen border patrols and tighten enforcement in known hotspots along the Malaysia–Thailand border.
He also urged the public to provide any information related to cross-border crimes to the authorities to enable swift action.
In a bid to further tighten security, Kelantan police enforced a ban on illegal border crossings from Dec 1, 2024.

Thailand fireworks factory blast kills nine

The factory ignited around 11am (0400 GMT) in Mueang district of Suphan Buri province, north of Bangkok, where images shared by a rescue group showed a charred building reduced to rubble. Thai police said nine people were confirmed dead -- up from an earlier toll of four -- and two others were being treated at a nearby hospital. "We are trying to identify the cause of the blast," local police chief Wanchai Khaoram told AFP. Factory fires are common in Thailand, where enforcement of safety regulations remain weak. Last year, an explosion at another firework factory in the same province killed at least 23 people. - AFP

GOF seizes 14 goats, 190kg of ketum in Kelantan raids

PASIR MAS: The General Operations Force (GOF) has seized 14 goats and 190kg of ketum leaves, with a combined estimated value of over RM18,000, in two separate operations carried out here and in Tanah Merah. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said two local men were arrested in connection with the possession of the livestock and the ketum leaves. He said both seizures were made under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan, which took place on Monday and last night. In the first operation, members of the 7th Battalion spotted a suspicious vehicle at Chabang Empat Tendong in Pasir Mas at around 7pm yesterday. "Upon inspection, GOF personnel found 14 goats cramped in the rear of the vehicle. "The 41-year-old driver failed to produce any documentation for the animals, which are believed to have been intended for sale on the local market. The estimated value of the seizure is RM10,500," he said. The case has been referred to the Kelantan Veterinary Department for further action under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. In a separate case, Ros Azhan said GOF personnel discovered several packages of ketum leaves in a vehicle. "The car was stopped as it passed through Kampung Bechah Butir Nangka in Tanah Merah at around 9am on Monday. Inside, the personnel found 19 black plastic packages containing 190kg of ketum leaves. The driver was also detained. "The seizure, valued at about RM7,600, has been handed over to the Tanah Merah Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952.

Two men arrested for trying to smuggle 1,550 litres of petrol to neighbouring countries

SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) arrested two foreign men with 62 barrels, containing 1,550 litres of petrol, on a cargo ship 0.8 nautical miles west of Pulau Berhala here early Wednesday morning (July 30), believed to be intended for smuggling to neighbouring countries. Sandakan maritime zone director Maritime Captain Muhamad Suhairy Hussain said the men, aged 38 and 42, were the skipper and crew member of the cargo ship, and were arrested at 1.35am after the vessel was spotted acting suspiciously and trying to flee when approached by MMEA forces. "A search of the boat found the barrels. Both suspects also did not have identification documents, and the cargo vessel did not have an operating licence," he said in a statement here on Wednesday. Meanwhile, he said the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1962, the Immigration Act 1959/1963 and the Sabah Port and Wharf Enactment 2002. Suhairy also urged the public to channel information related to smuggling activities or maritime crimes to the Sandakan Maritime Operations Centre at 089-222519 or 999 for further action. – Bernama
