Russia to mull countermeasures against new EU sanctions post analysis, says Dy FM
Moscow, July 18 (UNI) Amid the European Union's approval of a new sanctions package against Russia, specifically targeting the country's oil market, Moscow has not ruled out countermeasures to tackle the measure, after it concludes its analysis of the 18th round of European sanctions, said Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko.
Speaking to Moscow's state-owned-media TASS, Grushko said "Certainly, we will analyse their impact on our economy. We will take measures supporting our interests in case of necessity. And some countermeasures are also possible."
In its latest round of sanctions, the EU has expanded its blacklisting of individuals and legal entities associated with Russia, lowered the price ceiling for Russian oil purchases in the EU, excluded the possibility of resuming Nord Stream gas pipelines' operations, introduced restrictions against oil tankers and banks, and set forth new export restrictions.

AI models with systemic risks given pointers on how to comply with EU AI rules
The European Commission set out guidelines on Friday to help AI models it has determined have systemic risks and face tougher obligations to mitigate potential threats comply with European Union artificial intelligence regulation (AI Act). The move aims to counter criticism from some companies about the AI Act and the regulatory burden while providing more clarity to businesses which face fines ranging from 7.5 million euros ($8.7 million) or 1.5% of turnover to 35 million euros or 7% of global turnover for violations. The AI Act, which became law last year, will apply on August 2 for AI models with systemic risks and foundation models such as those made by Google, OpenAI, Meta Platforms, Anthropic and Mistral. Companies have until August 2 next year to comply with the legislation. The Commission defines AI models with systemic risk as those with very advanced computing capabilities that could have a significant impact on public health, safety, fundamental rights or society. The first group of models will have to carry out model evaluations, assess and mitigate risks, conduct adversarial testing, report serious incidents to the Commission and ensure adequate cybersecurity protection against theft and misuse. General-purpose AI (GPAI) or foundation models will be subject to transparency requirements such as drawing up technical documentation, adopt copyright policies and provide detailed summaries about the content used for algorithm training. "With today's guidelines, the Commission supports the smooth and effective application of the AI Act," EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen said in a statement.

Russia pounds Ukraine with over 300 drones, killing 1 in Odesa
Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine overnight into Saturday (July 19, 2025) with hundreds of drones, killing at least one person, part of a stepped-up bombing campaign that has dashed hopes for a breakthrough in efforts to end the more than 3-year-old war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on X, saying Russia fired over 300 drones, along with more than 30 cruise missiles. One person died when Russian forces attacked the Black Sea port city of Odesa with more than 20 drones and a missile, the city's mayor, Hennadii Trukhanov, said Saturday on Telegram, while five people were rescued when a fire broke out in a residential high-rise building. According to Mr. Zelenskyy, six other people were wounded in the attack on Odesa, including a child, and critical infrastructure was damaged in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region. The Ukrainian president also thanked international leaders 'who understand how important it is to promptly implement our agreements' aimed at boosting Ukraine's defense capabilities, including joint weapons production, drone manufacturing, and the supply of air defense systems. Russia has been intensifying its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities. It now often batters Ukraine with more drones in a single night than it did during some entire months in 2024, and analysts say the barrages are likely to escalate. On July 8, Russia unleashed more than 700 drones — a record. Russia's Defence Ministry said it shot down 71 Ukrainian drones overnight into Saturday. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that 13 drones were shot down as they approached the Russian capital.

India-EFTA trade pact to be implemented from Oct 1: Goyal

The commitment is the key substance of the agreement, which took almost 16 years to conclude, for India in return for opening its markets for several products coming from the EFTA nations. The biggest trading partner of India in the bloc is Switzerland. India has low trade volumes with the remaining three countries. In the pact, India is offering 82.7 per cent of its tariff lines or product categories, which cover 95.3 per cent of EFTA exports, of which more than 80 per cent of imports are gold. Domestic customers will get access to high-quality Swiss products, such as watches, chocolates, biscuits, and clocks, at lower prices as India will phase out customs duties under the trade pact on these goods over 10 years. In the services sector, the commerce ministry has earlier stated that India has offered 105 sub-sectors to the EFTA, like accounting, business services, computer services, distribution and health. On the other hand, the country has secured commitments in 128 sub-sectors from Switzerland, 114 from Norway, 107 from Liechtenstein, and 110 from Iceland. Segments, where Indian services will get a boost, include legal, audio-visual, R&D, computer, accounting, and auditing. Further, the pact would provide an opportunity for domestic exporters to integrate into the EU (European Union) markets. Over 40 per cent of Switzerland's global services exports are to the EU. Indian companies can look to Switzerland as a base for extending their market reach to the EU. India-EFTA two-way trade was USD 24.4 billion in 2024-25.
