WATCH as former Clemson baseball starter has career day at MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol
Atlanta Braves outfielder Eli White, who played at Clemson from 2014-16, crushed two home runs in the Braves' 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The game was played at Bristol Motor Speedway, the crown jewel of NASCAR's short-track circuit that previously hosted a regular season college football game between Tennessee and Virginia Tech in 2016.
White was 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. He started his day with a three-run blast down the left field line off Reds reliever Brent Suter that traveled 411 feet in the top of the second inning for a 3-1 Braves lead.
Leading off the seventh inning, White went deep again with a 413-foot smash to left center off reliever Scott Barlow to cap the Braves' scoring.
For White, now in his sixth major league season, the home runs were his fifth and sixth of the year. He's up to a career-high 24 RBIs for the year, and his four RBIs Sunday were a career high for one game. White's seventh-inning blast tied his career high for most home runs in a season, and his batting average rose to .254 through 76 games this season.
A product of Wren High School in Piedmont, South Carolina, White has already played in more games this season than his previous high of 64 with the Texas Rangers in 2021. He was an 11th round pick by the Oakland Athletics in the 2016 MLB draft after hitting eight home runs and 22 doubles across three seasons at Clemson.

Aug. 6 (UPI) -- One of the umpires in the Marlins-Braves series this weekend will be the first woman to umpire in a Major League Baseball game. Jen Pawol, a New Jersey native, will join the umpire team in Atlanta, where she'll work three games. On Sunday, she'll be behind home plate. She is one of 17 Triple-A umpires eligible to substitute in Major League games. "Anybody in baseball will tell you that you've just got to keep it simple, keep working hard, put your all into it and get ready for the next day," Pawol, 48, said in 2024. "That's all I think about every day -- get better before tomorrow." She has climbed the umpire ranks since starting her pro career in 2016. She reached Triple-A in 2023 and was the first woman to reach that level in 34 years. She umped behind home plate for the Triple-A Championship that year. In 2024, Pawol became the first woman umpire in a Spring Training game since Ria Cortesio in 2007. She was a Triple-A crew chief in 2024 and worked more Spring Training games in 2025. "For me, personally, I just love doing the job," Pawol said in 2016. "I'm passionate about it, and it's just part of who I am." She played softball at Hofstra University and at the Amateur Softball Association Major Fast Pitch level for 10 years before switching to umpiring. The former catcher umpired in the Big Ten Conference from 2013 to 2015. She went to the 2016 Minor League Baseball Umpire Training Academy in Vero Beach, Fla., and got her first assignment in the Gulf Coast League (now known as the Florida Complex League). Pawol was the seventh woman umpire in Minor League Baseball history. Before becoming a full-time umpire, she was an art teacher.

Announced on Wednesday by Major League Baseball, Pawol is getting called up to be part of the five-team umpire crew for this weekend's Atlanta Braves-Miami Marlins series, which features a doubleheader on Saturday, making her the first female umpire to work a regular-season MLB game.
