Gloucester ranked best motorway service station in Great Britain
For many people motorway service stations are a place to take a break, grab a snack and use the toilet, but the rankings from the consumer recommendation group, which surveyed users of nearly 100 service stations across Great Britain, highlight the best and worst.
The gulf in standards is vast, with some described as 'perfect to break up your journey' while others 'look and feel filthy' and smell of 'stale urine'.
The rankings place Gloucester higher than 89 competitors, awarding it five-star ratings in several categories such as shops, food and drink, facilities, cleanliness, convenience and accessibility, and outside space.
The M5 service station, which earned an overall rating of 85%, is owned by Westmorland Family, which also owns Tebay services in Cumbria and Cairn Lodge in Lanarkshire, which finished second and fourth respectively.
They are joined in the top five by Rugby services, owned by Moto, in third and Extra's Leeds Skelton Lake in fifth.
Moto's Rugby branch is one of 37 stations the company owns that are spread across the list, including nine in the bottom 10.
Moto's Bridgwater station in Somerset ranked last, with a customer score of 23% and one-star ratings across all categories. Only slightly above is Leeming Ba in North Yorkshire, also ranked one star across the board and with a score of 26%.
The rankings were compiled by more than 4,000 Which? members based on their experiences during a combined 9,000 visits to service stations across Great Britain.
Ken McMeikan, the chief executive of Moto Hospitality, said the survey results used a smaller pool of respondents than a previous study that ranked Moto stations highly, and that the company was investing heavily in improving the facilities of its branches, where cleanliness was mentioned by numerous respondents as an issue.
'The most recent independent Transport Focus study, conducted in the summer of 2023, surveyed a significantly larger group than the Which? panel,' he said. 'Moto achieved an average customer satisfaction score of 94% across our motorway service areas. This feedback highlights the positive impact of our ongoing efforts.
'We are committed to reviewing the specific issues raised by the Which? panel and will continue to strive for enhancements across all sites. Our goal is to ensure that we always meet the high standards and expectations that our customers deserve.'

O2 hands out FREE speed upgrade in 22 locations across UK & it's already live in four holiday hotspots
HOLIDAYING O2 customers will be able to bag a free speed upgrade at 22 locations across the UK. They're all holiday hotspots – and four of the speed boosts have already gone live. 2 O2 has vowed to upgrade 22 Haven holiday sites across the UK. It's part of what the network is calling its "Mobile Transformation Plan", promising better signal in "high-demand areas". Four sites already have O2's "improved 5G", including Thornwick Bay Holiday Park in Yorkshire and Skegness Holiday Park in Lincolnshire. And O2 says that more sites will be upgraded "this summer and early next year". "With more people choosing to holiday in the UK, we are working to improve our mobile network in some of the most popular staycation destinations," said O2's mobile access director, Dr Robert Joyce. "This work with Haven is a great example of our Mobile Transformation Plan in action. "Bringing more reliable connectivity to the places people need it most. "So whether our customers are off to Skegness, Berwick, or Cleethorpes, they can stay connected this summer." O2 is working with network giant Freshwave to upgrade the sites. Network bosses have vowed to pour £700 million into infrastructure this year to boost connectivity. Sun's tech editor shows NEW 4mm thin folding Samsung – & teases 'flip iPhone' too And O2 is upgrading Haven holiday parks due to higher demand. "Our guests and owners expect to stay connected," said Haven tech boss James Bromley. "Whether it's sharing memories, streaming entertainment, or working remotely. "I'm delighted that our investment in our parks has attracted O2 to ensure we're delivering the best possible experience to families choosing to holiday or own at our parks." Haven has 38 holiday parks across the UK, but not all of them are being upgraded – only 22 sites are getting the speed boost. Here's the full list, as sent to The Sun: Haggerston Castle Berwick Primrose Valley Blue Dolphin Thornwick Skegness Seashore Orchards Golden Sands Seton Sands Hopton Combe Haven Allhallows Thorpe Park Cleethorpes Reighton Sands Hafan y Mor Rockley Park Marton Mere Burnham Perran Sands Craig Tara Devon Cliffs Littlesea The upgrade comes just days after Vodafone and Three confirmed that they had jointly upgraded over 600 mast sites across the UK. And earlier this year, EE upgraded its speeds across 50 towns and cities. 2 O2 merged with Virgin Media back in 2021, absorbing its Virgin Mobile customers. And O2 also secured a deal with Vodafone to acquire a large 78.8MHz chunk of spectrum. That means the company holds just under a third of UK mobile spectrum, making it one of the nation's biggest network providers.

American tourist left stunned after visiting Poundland for the first time
An American woman visiting the UK documented her first trip to budget high street retailer Poundland - and was left stunned by what she found in the store. Cara, who hails from Portland, Oregon, shares a love of British culture with her partner Jeremy - so much so that they've dedicated an entire YouTube channel to highlighting some of the best food, views and hidden gems the nation has to offer. Since their initial visit in 2018, the couple have travelled to Britain a handful of times, capturing along the way the moments they tried iconic dishes, such as fish and chips, and popular eateries, like Toby Carvery and Greggs, for the first time. In a video uploaded to their channel The Magic Geekdom in August, Cara couldn't contain her shock after making her first trip to Poundland, where she was blown away by the variety of goods that aren't commonly found in Dollar Tree stores back home. Dollar Tree is considered one of the most popular discount retail chains in North America, offering a wide range of items, such as groceries, toys, hardware, party supplies, household goods and seasonal decorations. However, Cara was left impressed by a number additional products sold in Poundland - namely its Pepco clothing section. She recorded herself wide-eyed as she took in the endless rails of socks, underwear, t-shirts, coats, shoes, nightwear and accessories. The content creator gushed: 'There's a whole clothing department I was not expecting. I feel like in the US our Dollar Trees do not have this many clothes. This is huge! The clothing section is giving Primark.' Speaking to the camera, she asked viewers whether Poundland clothes were good quality after admitting she already had her eye on a pair of 'cute' fluffy slippers. Making her way to the home goods aisle, she noticed a full cutlery set on display for £3 and added that it would be more difficult to find a similar set in the U.S. sold at the same price point. She then moved on to the DIY and hardware aisle, where she spotted a much larger range of tools, paintbrushes and other items on display than those found in American discount stores. However, she was let down by the stationary and crafts aisle, where the lack of variation in gel pens, pencils and felt-tips was 'not as exciting' as she'd hoped. Cara also added that in the chilled food section, the produce did not appear to be the 'best of quality.' Concluding her visit, she said: 'Poundland has so many surprising items and brands that the whole experience was pretty fun, especially because they have seasonal summer items right now.' It comes as another American tourist who visited Wetherspoons for the first time has revealed his shock over the budget boozer's 'ridiculous' menu prices. Joel Simpson, who goes by ItsJPS on YouTube, shared his trip to the UK this month, where he spent the majority of his week-long break in London and Brighton. Towards the tail end of his trip, the content creator decided to stop by Yorkshire, where he toured the scenic moors of the Yorkshire Dales and marvelled at the historic Durham Cathedral. Accompanied by three British friends, Joel decided to seal his visit to the north with a meal at Wetherspoons, which he excitedly admitted he was trying out for the first time. A video uploaded to his channel shows the group heading into The Postern Gate, one of the chain's five York venues, before taking their seats and ordering from the menu. The following scenes shows a hearty spread of loaded chips, 10 chicken wings and a pepperoni pizza, which Joel said was all purchased for £15.

Rail campaigners issue warning over potential 5.5% fares rise
England's train fares could face a potential 5.5% increase next year, following a forecast of July's Retail Prices Index (RPI) reaching 4.5%. Public transport groups have condemned the prospective rise as "outrageous", arguing it would deter passengers and is unjustified if above inflation. Pressure groups like Railfuture and Campaign for Better Transport advocate for a fare freeze, particularly with the impending nationalisation of train operators under Great British Railways. They suggest that any efficiencies gained from a more integrated railway system should benefit passengers directly, rather than being absorbed by the Treasury. The Department for Transport has yet to confirm next year's regulated fare cap, stating that decisions will be announced later this year, aiming to balance affordability for both passengers and taxpayers. Rail campaigners say potential 5.5% fares rise would be 'ripping off' passengers
