Hugh Grant Accidentally Becomes a Meme After Falling Asleep at Wimbledon

Yahoo09-07-2025
Hugh Grant attended the Wimbledon quarter-finals Wednesday, but rather than watching a tennis match from his very exclusive seat, the 'Bridget Jones' star accidentally took a trip to Nodding Hill.
As the telecast turned its cameras to Grant, viewers at home noticed that the actor had apparently fallen asleep. It wasn't long until social media users began sharing memes about the extremely costly nap.

Grant's tickets weren't just pricey — they were priceless. Not only did the actor fall asleep at the popular event, he did so in the highly exclusive Royal Box. The invite-only seats in the 74-person Centre Court suite is often occupied by members of royal families as well as heads of state, tennis stars and other prominent celebrities. Sitting directly in front of Grant was Queen Camilla.
Some took Grant's slumber as a sign of a boring match. Others expressed frustration that the 64-year-old star would take a coveted seat only to sleep through the function.

Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek Turn Heads in Photos at Champions Dinner

Wimbledon 2025's singles winners cleaned up well for their appearances at the Champions dinner. Italian Jannik Sinner and Polish Iga Swiatek were seen dressed up for the dinner in a post on the official Wimbledon X account. To be clear, there's nothing to show the two were at the dinner as a couple, just as the most successful tennis players of the tournament. Both certainly proved why they're each ranked number one in the world. However, they did dance together as part of the longstanding tradition at the nearly 150-year-old tournament where the singles champions share a dance. Though the dance surely is not quite that old since Wimbledon only started allowing women's singles in 1884 after first starting the tournament in 1877. Sinner, 23, won his first ever Wimbledon title after defeating Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, 22, in the men's singles final on July 13, 2025. In doing so, he became the first Italian to ever win Wimbledon, according to the tournament's official Instagram. Sinner wore a simple black suit with a narrow black tie to the dinner. Swiatek, 24, wore a long, light blue dress and some fairly simple jewelry. She's also celebrating her first ever Wimbledon title, and sixth grand slam win in her career. She dominated in her match against American Amanda Anisimova, 23, who herself was having quite the impressive tournament until the final match, where Swiatek swept the court. Hopefully the pair don't have quite as awkward of a dance as Alcaraz had in 2024, when he danced with women's singles winner Czech Barbora Krejcikova, 29. Alcaraz admittedly could use some dancing lessons. "Let's say, could be better I guess. Yeah, let's see tonight, but I try to do my best," he told talkSPORT in 2024, after winning Wimbledon. While the dance is generally considered tradition, in later years it hasn't always been mandatory, and the dinner and dance were canceled altogether in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The dinner and dance are usually held at The Sinner, Iga Swiatek Turn Heads in Photos at Champions Dinner first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 14, 2025

Pride marchers 'don't let it rain on their parade'

Rainy weather has failed to deter thousands from taking part in a festival celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. The weekend-long Newcastle Pride festival got under way earlier with a march through the city centre. Organisers Northern Pride said the theme was being "unapologetically visible". Director Ste Dunn had said the event was set to be "bigger and better than ever". Starting at the Civic Centre, the march headed along John Dobson Street and New Bridge Street West to avoid construction works on Northumberland Street. It joined its usual route along Blackett Street and Percy Street, before finishing back at the Civic Centre. The route was planned around bringing the festival further into the city centre. In previous years it had been based further out in Exhibition Park and at the Town Moor. Vante, one of those taking part, said: "It's about standing together as one creating an inclusive environment. "Yes it's raining, but as Barbara Streisand once said, 'It won't rain on my parade'. "This is brilliant thousands of our community coming together to celebrate." The event was set to close with a candlelit vigil at 21:00 BST on Sunday at Times Square, which organisers said would give people "time for reflection and remembrance". Director Ste Dunne said: "Launching Newcastle Pride as a city-wide takeover last year was truly transformative, and we are so excited for this year's Newcastle Pride festival to be bigger and better than ever. "We are confident that we have been able to make the new route work, and that the right decision has been made to ensure the safety and welfare of participants." Newcastle City Council leader Karen Kilgour said the weekend's events were a celebration, but also an act "of defiance and solidarity". She added: "We are aware of increases in hate crime against the LGBTQ+ community recently, and that is why events like this are important. "I am proud that Newcastle is an open, diverse and fair city and one that is safe and welcoming for everyone." Follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.
