Boy, 6, made chilling hospital comment before 'killing newborn after dropping'

A six year old boy, suspected of causing the death of a newborn girl, was heard making a chilling remark before he is believed to have dropped the infant on a hospital floor.
The parents of Zayneb-Cassandra, who was born premature and barely a week old, said they will "stick together to the end" following their daughter's tragic passing. The horrifying incident occurred last Friday at the Jeanne-de-Flandre Children's Hospital in Lille, France.
A criminal investigation has now been launched after the baby was rushed to intensive care but sadly declared dead on Tuesday due to a traumatic brain injury. The boy had already been reported as being a 'disruptive presence' within the hospital when he was found alone with the unconscious baby in a neonatal unit.
The child - the son of another mum on a maternity ward - was seen wandering into other rooms. Zayneb's grandmother claimed he then made a brief comment after entering the baby's room before being ushered out by her husband.
She told French outlet Voix du Nord: "He was entering the other rooms. He also entered Zayneb's room for the first time. He said she looked like a doll, and my husband, who was there, took him out," reports the Mirror.
While Zayneb's grieving dad Mohamed-Hamza, 23, spoke of the trauma caused by the horrific incident. He told Le Parisien: "I have no words to describe my condition and that of my wife."
Mum Sephora, also 23, rang her husband to deliver the devastating news that their daughter had been caught up in an incident. "She told me our daughter had fallen to the floor... I burst into tears," Mohamed-Hamza recounted.
Sephora was finalising discharge documents last Friday when "all of a sudden, the family received a call from a ward manager, saying they needed to come right away – a little boy had been playing with the baby, who had fallen".
The family, referencing another mother in the adjacent room, reported "a loud bang" before discovering Zayneb unresponsive on the ground with the boy seated next to her on a chair.
Zayneb's grandmother disclosed: "It seems he tried to grab her by her nappy, and she fell on her head."
She continued: "The boy would arrive at 7am and spend all day running up and down the hallways. All the mothers were complaining, and a nurse even warned the child's mother that there was a problem."
The juvenile unit of the Lille Judicial Police Service has launched an inquiry. "Investigations are currently underway in this case," a representative for Lille prosecutors announced.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the hospital stated: "The thoughts of the University Hospital professionals are first and foremost with the young victim, her family, and her loved ones."
They further commented: "This human tragedy has deeply affected the staff and teams of Lille University Children's Hospital, as well as the other families present."
The hospital also confirmed that it has implemented stringent measures to restrict visitors following the incident. It also revealed the launch of "an internal administrative investigation".

Israel will let foreign countries drop aid into Gaza, Israel army radio says

Israel will allow foreign countries to parachute aid into Gazastarting on Friday, Israeli army radio quoted a military official as saying. An Israeli military spokesperson did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment on the report. The Gaza health ministry says more than 100 people have died from starvation in the Palestinian enclave since Israel cut off supplies to the territory in March. Israel, which has been at war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza since October 2023, lifted that blockade in May but has restrictions in place that it says are needed to prevent aid from being diverted to militant groups. In the first two weeks of July, the UN children's agency UNICEF treated 5,000 children facing acute malnutrition in Gaza. World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that Gaza was suffering man-made mass starvation caused by a blockade on aid into the enclave. Jay Slater's cause of death explained as coroner shares ruling

Jay Slater's death was ruled as an accident after he fell from a height, according to the coroner overseeing the tragic teenager's inquest. Jay, 19, was found dead in a Tenerife ravine last year, sparking a massive, weeks-long search across the island that saw rescuers scour dozens of miles after his disappearance in summer 2024. An inquest into the circumstances surrounding his death has heard heart-wrenching testimonies from family members and acquaintances who assisted in the search and recovery efforts, with the proceedings at Preston Coroner's Court concluding today with a verdict from the presiding coroner. Dr James Adeley determined that Jay "died an accidental death" after falling from a height into the Juan López ravine in Buenavista del Norte. He stated: "Jay fell at a particularly dangerous area in difficult terrain. He fell approximately 20 to 25 metres, suffering skull fractures and brain trauma from which he would have died instantaneously. Jay Dean Slater died an accidental death. "This is a tragic death of a young man." The doctor added: "There was no third party involved." Dr Adeley suggested that contributing factors to the fall may have included inappropriate clothing, lack of sleep and mountain training, as well as potential after effects of drugs he had consumed. He pointed out that on the night of June 16, 2024, and in the days following, there was "every indication" that Mr Slater's friends, who were with him on holiday, were worried about him, made efforts to locate him, and took care of his well-being. The inquest had previously been informed that Jay was officially identified by his finger and palm prints as his body was "mummified" when found. Jay was holidaying on the Spanish island and had been to the NRG music festival at the Papagayo nightclub in the resort of Playa de las Americas on June 16, 2024 (Image: LancsLive) The post-mortem examination revealed that his body had undergone "extensive mummification" due to exposure to the intense sun for several weeks. Dr Adeley stated that the evidence indicated that no other person was involved in the death and there was nothing to suggest Mr Slater had been threatened, assaulted, coerced, or feared for his safety. The coroner told Mr Slater's family, who were present in court, that he hoped the "examination of facts rather than conjecture" during the proceedings had brought them some solace. Earlier at the hearing on Friday, Mr Slater's tearful mother, Debbie Duncan, paid homage to her son, stating: "He was very loved and our hearts are broken," Ms Duncan said. "Our lives will never be the same without Jay in it." Sign up to the Irish Mirror's Courts and Crime newsletter here and get breaking crime updates and news from the courts direct to your inbox.
