Vince Morales and Raul Rosas Jr. meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 64 at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.
Last event: 4-2
UFC main cards, 2025: 25-22-1
Vince Morales vs. Raul Rosas Jr. UFC Mexico preview
Morales (11-9 MMA, 3-7 UFC) is in his second stint in the UFC, but has back-to-back losses since his return and might be being tossed to the wolves here … Rosas (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has designs still to become the youngest champion in UFC history and has three straight wins, including two for bonuses.
Vince Morales vs. Raul Rosas Jr. UFC Mexico expert pick, prediction
Serving as a potential showcase fight at 135 pounds is a scrap between Raul Rosas Jr. and Vince Morales.
The UFC doesn't go out of their way to try to properly build up a fighter these days, so it's hard to hate them doing it for the 20-year-old Rosas.
And when you look at this fight on paper (especially at first glance), it's difficult to deny that's exactly what the UFC is doing by booking a veteran fighter on a losing skid to make a quick turnaround to fight one of their golden boys at elevation.
I interviewed Morales last week and he appeared to be in great shape and spirits, all things considered. I just hate that the UFC – whether it's Morales here or Steve Erceg in the main event – puts good fighters who do solids for them in incredibly tough spots.
Nevertheless, I still suspect that Morales – despite not training at elevation – may still have the edge when it comes to staying power and stamina.
Aside from the fact that gas never appeared to be an issue for Morales before, the 34-year-old bantamweight is excellent at pacing himself in victory or defeat. Whereas Rosas, who seems hardwired to come out like hell on wheels in Round 1, tends to slow down as the fight wears on or, at the very least, needs pockets to recoup his energy.
With that in mind, this fight could get even more interesting if Morales can survive Rosas's early storm.
I'm not sure if Rosas has the finishing prowess to put away an underrated grappler and wrestler like Morales, so the most likely outcome on paper is a competitive decision win for 'El Niño Problema.'
The potential problem, however, is that I suspect that Morales' underrated grappling game could present issues for Rosas from a stylistic perspective.
Not only has Morales been spending the past couple of years with guys like Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili wrestling with him in the training rooms, but 'Vandetta' has also been putting said improvements to practice by submitting UFC-level fighters with his wicked front-choke repertoire.
It'll be the least popular pick you'll see all week, but I'll take a flier on Morales to survive the early storm and lock up a D'Arce choke on a fading Rosas Jr. in Round 3.
Vince Morales vs. Raul Rosas Jr. UFC Mexico odds
The oddsmakers and the public are heavily favoring the Mexican fighter, listing Rosas Jr. -450 and Morales +330 via FanDuel.
Vince Morales vs. Raul Rosas Jr. UFC Mexico start time, how to watch

Cory Sandhagen on Merab Dvalishvili's UFC 316 win: 'You've got to knock that guy out'

Cory Sandhagen on Merab Dvalishvili's UFC 316 win: 'You've got to knock that guy out' Cory Sandhagen acknowledges that there's only one way he can dethrone UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili. Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) beat Sean O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in even more definitive fashion when he submitted him in their title-fight rematch, which headlined Saturday's UFC 316 event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) reacted to Dvalishvili's win. "It was great – Merab did an awesome job," Sandhagen told ESPN on the UFC 316 headliner. "I kind of anticipated that Merab was even going to look better in this fight just when I was thinking about it a little more, and he did awesome. He got the finish, and I'm sure that that's what he was looking for, and I'm happy for him. Me and Merab have a really good rapport together, so I'm happy for him." Sandhagen, who's coming off a finish of Deiveson Figueiredo last month, was in attendance, and is expected to be next in line for Dvalishvili. "I was kind of surprised that O'Malley decided to move as much as he was," Sandhagen said. "That's a very tough thing to do against a guy that's going to press like that. When Merab decides to get aggressive, he gets aggressive, and I'm looking forward to tha. Merab is the best guy in the division. He's maybe one of the best guys in the UFC, and I want to take that guy out." With Dvalishvili on a 13-fight winning streak, Sandhagen says "The Machine" has to be stopped. "Yeah, you've got to knock that guy out," Sandhagen said. "That's it. You've just got to knock that guy out."

Josh Pate isn't sleeping on Oklahoma's John Mateer

Josh Pate isn't sleeping on Oklahoma's John Mateer The Oklahoma Sooners made a major upgrade at starting quarterback this winter. With former starter Jackson Arnold off to play for the Auburn Tigers, OU had a hole to fill under center. Not only did they fill it, they did so with a player, John Mateer, who is better than any QB the Sooners had on the roster a year ago. In fact, Mateer was the transfer portal's top overall player this year. Oklahoma beat out Miami and North Carolina to land the former Washington State star. After OU was atrocious offensively in 2024, Mateer's arrival gives the Sooners a chance to rebound back to their winning ways in 2025. At least that's what Josh Pate, the host of "Josh Pate's College Football Show", thinks. Because of familiarity with his play-caller and the help of players from multiple top-ten recruiting classes over the past few years, he has Mateer right alongside the best quarterbacks in the entire SEC. "I'm putting John Mateer in the top five," Pate said. "If I'm right, Oklahoma's gonna be a contender in the SEC. I believe in the OC-quarterback approach, bringing both of them in, not just one of them, especially when they're both qualified, and Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer are. I also think it greatly helps that John Mateer is not being brought into Norman, Oklahoma, and then being looked at by everyone down on their knees with their hands clasped praying, 'Please save us John, save us.' No, you don't need to save anyone. You need to go in there and play solid football and execute, make good decisions, because you know what you've got around you? You've got a top-ten roster around you. You've got a really good defense. You don't have to score 42 a game to win, and you've got guys calling plays for you that you're very familiar with. I think he's gonna be really good this year. That's why I've got Oklahoma top ten in the preseason." Sooner Nation has long clamored for complementary football in Norman. For years, OU fans had to watch incredible offenses, led by Heisman Trophy-level quarterbacks, be ultimately let down by bad defenses. The trio of Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts combined for four College Football Playoff appearances in five seasons from 2015 to 2019, and it was the inability to get stops on defense that, for the most part, sunk those excellent Oklahoma teams in the semifinal round each time. When Brent Venables took over for Lincoln Riley, the hope was that he could change that. In the years since, Venables has built up a defense that looks like it can compete in the SEC. But, just as the defense was getting really good in 2024, Oklahoma's offense fell off a cliff with Seth Littrell and Jackson Arnold at the helm. Complementary football eluded OU yet again. With plenty of returning starters, the Oklahoma defense looks like it has the pieces to be good again. On the other side of the ball, the Arbuckle-Mateer combination hopes to finally bring high-level play on both offense and defense, at the same time, to Norman in 2025.
