Can't stop Kamal film screening due to threat of mob violence: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: 'Thug Life' may soon be screened in theatres of Karnataka despite Kamal Haasan's remarks on the Kannada language as Supreme Court on Tuesday asserted that the rule of law, not people's sentiment, must prevail and that a censor-board-cleared film's screening cannot be stopped through the threat of mob violence. "As democratic state, Karnataka cannot allow mobs to jeopardise the rule of law," said a bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan while ordering transfer of a petition by Haasan, who had moved Karnataka high court for security to theatres and release of the film in the state, to the apex court. Asking the Siddaramaiah govt to respond by Thursday to a PIL, which will be heard along with the petition transferred from HC, the bench said, "As protectors of rule of law and fundamental rights, including right to freedom of speech and expression, the Supreme Court and the high courts must ensure that Central Board for Film Certification-cleared films are screened in theatres across India." The bench said, "Public sentiment does not mean a gun is put to the head of the theatre owners to stop screening of the film. We are not saying the public must watch the film. After it is up for screening, it is for the public to decide whether to watch it or not." Responding to petitioner M Mahesh Reddy's advocate A Velan's demand for immediate release of the film in Karnataka, state counsel D L Chidananda told the bench that Haasan has agreed before HC to resolve the issue with the state theatre association. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Yoga Programs for Total Wellness – Start Today Search7 Learn More Undo Another counsel said people's sentiment is involved in the matter and that HC had only asked Haasan to consider tendering an apology or expressing regret for his remark. "The HC had no business to seek regret or apology. As a custodian of rule of law and protector of rights, it should have considered the issue whether a CBFC-cleared film be allowed to be released in theatres of the state," Justice Manmohan said. He said, "There is something wrong in society. Even if someone makes a wrong statement about a language, it is for the intelligentsia and public to debate, provide proof and prove him wrong." After citing a recent SC judgment quashing the case against Imran Pratapgarhi for his poem, Justice Bhuyan recalled that Bombay HC had intervened to set aside the Maharashtra and Kerala govts' ban on staging of the Marathi play 'Me Nathuram Godse Boltoy' to uphold the right to freedom of speech. SC had upheld the HC order. "Mahatma Gandhi may be revered. But people can't be stopped from expressing their views on him. Similarly, a CBFC cleared film cannot be stopped from being screened just because public sentiments are against the actor for an alleged controversial statement," Justice Bhuyan said.

Before-and-after photos of Ukrainian soldier after 3 years in captivity go viral, leave netizens surprised

A Promise Made in the Face of Invasion — tangerinukraine (@tangerinukraine) Inside the Shadow of Olenivka A set of before-and-after images showing Ukrainian soldier Oleksandr Strafun before his 2022 capture and after his release in 2025 is going viral. The two photos, placed side by side, reveal not just the physical toll of war, but the harrowing scars left by years of captivity. The healthy, spirited man in traditional Ukrainian attire, full of life and resolve, is now gaunt, with pale, ashen skin and shock-white hair. The contrast is images were shared online by Olena Zolotariova, a volunteer with the NGO Power of People, in a bid to highlight the devastating reality of what Ukrainian prisoners endure in Russian detention. The viral photos have now become a searing symbol of wartime endurance and the unseen torment borne by those behind enemy reaction to Strafun's photos was swift and emotional. Reddit users, Twitter threads, and Instagram reels exploded with comments about his transformation. 'He looks like my grandfather before he passed of heart disease,' one Redditor commented. 'It's wild how white his hair went. I hope he can recover.'Strafun, a reserve officer and steelworker from Mariupol, had not been actively engaged in combat since the 2014 conflict in eastern Ukraine. But when Russian forces launched their full-scale invasion in 2022, he felt compelled to serve again. According to an interview his wife Olena gave to the Ukrainian outlet 0629, Strafun immediately contacted military recruiters. 'He always knew that if something suddenly started, he had no right to stay home,' she joined the local defence on February 25. Just one day later, he called Olena to say goodbye. 'He said he wouldn't return home anymore. I asked, when should I expect you? And he answered: 'I'll return after victory',' she victory seemed heartbreakingly far away as the weeks passed. Their last conversation was on March 1, when he asked for soap and socks. She never had the chance to deliver them. As Mariupol came under heavy siege, Olena's phone was stolen by Russian-aligned Kadyrov forces. Cut off from communication, she feared the a network of other prisoners' families, Olena eventually discovered that her husband was being held at the notorious Olenivka detention facility in the Donetsk region. Olenivka, known for brutal conditions and alleged war crimes, became infamous after a deadly blast on July 29, 2022, killed at least 50 Ukrainian POWs and injured over one day before the explosion, Strafun had managed to contact Olena through a smuggled phone, hinting at something ominous happening. 'He said something strange was happening in the colony, some constant movements. Some people were being taken away, others relocated,' she he survived the blast, but it would be another three years before he was freed as part of a prisoner exchange. When he finally came home, Olena—and the rest of the world—barely recognized him.
