"We see him as a long-term option": Pat Cummins backs Cameron Green for No. 3 spot in test
New Delhi [India] June 25 (ANI): Ahead of the first test in Barbados from Wednesday, against West Indies, Australia skipper Pat Cummins spoke on the number 3 batting position in the test squad.
Aussie skipper felt Cameron Green is a long-term option for no. 3 slot, and he has been hitting the ball really well. West Indies and Australia have announced that they are playing XIs for the opening Test in Barbados.
'I always like to not have too many moving parts. We see that [Green at No. 3] as a long-term option. I think going into last week, he's hitting the ball really well, he's moving really well. He had a Test match where it obviously didn't go to plan. Think he only faced three or four balls, so the message is not to look into that too much. We're really happy with where his game's placed and I dare say we'll get a decent run of No. 3,' Pat Cummins said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
While speaking on Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne's not being included in the squad for the West Indies tour, Cummins said Labuschagne, at his best, is well and truly an international-standard Test batter, but he has to fight his way back into the team.
'I think him at his best is a well and truly an international standard Test batter. If there's an opening, we could see him fighting his way back into the Test team at some point. Obviously the focus now is giving a couple of other guys a go. He's had a pretty good run and obviously didn't make the most of it as well as he would like, so [we are] offering that opportunity to the next couple of guys,' Cummins added.
Labuschagne has finally run out of time and been dropped from the squad. Considering his silent outings with the bat and a Test century drought in Tests, Labuschagne was promoted to the opening slot in the WTC final against South Africa.
During his outing in the WTC final at Lord's, which was the last act of faith from selectors, Labuschagne returned with scores of 17 and 22, continuing with his elongated lean patch in Test format, according to ESPNcricinfo.

New Delhi [India] June 25 (ANI): Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar lauded England's clinical performance on the final day of the first test against India at Headingley, Leeds. He praised England batters Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley for their brilliant 188 opening stand. Duckett's masterful 149 set the tone for a historic run chase as England chased down the target of 371 to defeat India by five wickets at Headingley. With the win, England take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. JioHotstar expert Sanjay Manjrekar said while speaking on Match Centre Live, 'Duckett and Crawley took their time -- they respected the conditions, and they respected the fact that the opposition had a guy named Jasprit Bumrah. He also praised Indian seamer Prasidh Krishna for picking up two wickets in the second innings, and Shardul Thakur's wickets in the second session gave India fresh hope. Pant, Duckett rise to career-high ratings after Headingley heroics
Leeds [US] June 25 (ANI): India's Rishabh Pant and England's Ben Duckett have achieved career-best ratings in the latest ICC Men's Test Batter Rankings, following their impressive performances with the bat in the first Test at Headingley, according to the official website of ICC. Pant became just the second wicket-keeper behind Zimbabwe's Andy Flower to score two centuries in the same Test match when contributing 134 and 118 in the thrilling Leeds contest that England won by five wickets and gained a new career-best rating by improving one spot to move to seventh overall on the list for Test batters. Duckett claimed Player of the Match honours for his innings of 62 and 149, with the left-hander also obtaining a new career-best rating, jumping up five places to eighth in the updated rankings for Test batters. Duckett's England teammates Ollie Pope (up three spots to 19th) and Jamie Smith (up eighth places to 27th) also made some ground on the weekly update to the rankings, while India captain Shubman Gill jumped five rungs to 20th overall following his century in the first innings of the match. There was some joy for England skipper Ben Stokes, who gained three places to move up to fifth on the list for Test all-rounders following solid contributions with both bat and ball across the same Test. There was also a few changes to the latest T20I rankings following the completion of the tri-series between Scotland, Nepal and the Netherlands that saw the hosts prevail in Glasgow. Netherlands dasher Michael Levitt (up 16 spots to 14th) and Scotland all-rounder Brandon McMullen (up 20 rungs to equal 38th) made ground on the latest list for T20I batters, while spinner Mark Watt (up two places to 38th) made gains on the updated rankings for T20I bowlers.
