‘Emotional' to assume title once used by late Queen
Sophie, whose mother-in-law was Queen Elizabeth II, discussed her work and becoming the Duchess of Edinburgh in an interview with the Mirror during a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide this week.
She was formerly the Countess of Wessex, but became the Duchess of Edinburgh after the King handed her husband Edward, Charles' youngest brother, their late father's Duke of Edinburgh title on his 59th birthday in 2023.
This was in keeping with his parents' wishes and in recognition of Edward's commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award youth scheme.
The duchess told the paper that her change in title 'felt like quite a big moment' as the late Queen had previously held the same one.
She said: 'First of all it was quite large shoes to fill because not as many of the population alive today will remember but the Queen was Duchess of Edinburgh for the first few years when she and my father-in-law first married.
'For me, it was quite an emotional thing to sort of step into her shoes [as being Duchess of Edinburgh], it felt like quite a big moment.'
'But of course being practical my role and my husband's role is to support the King as it was to support the Queen and we are fortunate because we are able to not be in front and centre role, so it allows us the flexibility to explore our own interests and then also be available to do things like this where the King asked if I would represent him here, it so happens it also covering an area of interest personally for me too. But yes, we are there to support and that will continue.'
On being described as the royal family's secret weapon, Sophie said: 'I like to fly under the radar.
'It's all very well being a secret weapon but if no one knows, maybe it's too secret.'
'I suppose I should take it as a backhanded compliment,' she added.
'I don't see myself in a frontline position per se, that said admittedly there are fewer working members of the family these days so I suppose more and more I'm becoming less secretive.
'I just wonder what they are going to describe me as next.'
During the visit, Sophie met mothers of victims of the genocide and delivered a message from the King in which he said he was 'greatly saddened' not to be there in person, adding that he is 'most touched and grateful to be able to share these words as we pay our respects'.
More than 8,000 men and boys were killed on July 11 1995 by Bosnian Serb forces amid the break-up of the former Yugoslavia – Europe's worst atrocity since the Second World War.

The star has struggled with her mental health and binge eating for years. Denise Welch hasn't had the easiest of years so far, and just before Christmas the Loose Women favourite was forced to pull out of an acting job because of depression and anxiety. Her mental health is the biggest struggle the star has to live with, she revealed recently. 'Some people deal with diabetes, or MS or cancer — my thing is mental illness,' she tells OK! in an exclusive catch-up. 'I live with it, and I enjoy the periods in between my episodes.' Denise has now been back on the panel for a few months, but more change is on the way. In May, ITV announced it was merging production teams on three of its daytime shows, and cutting Loose Women and Lorraine back to 30 weeks a year, reports the Mirror. Although the channel insisted there wouldn't be any 'radical changes', there is some uncertainty about the future of the panel. But for Denise, who joined the show in 2005, it's an opportunity to make a return to acting. She said: 'I'm on television because I'm gobby and opinionated, and I think people can forget what I really do, and what I'm really good at, so I'm going to make a concerted effort to go back to what I do and know.' Denise says Loose Women holds a special place in her heart — not least because the average age of its stars is around 50. 'It's the only show in the country that not only celebrates older women, but reveres and listens to older women's opinions,' she says. Denise has become something of an icon for her age-defying looks and sassy attitude. At 67 she is bursting with confidence — whether people like her swimwear pics or not. 'Maybe I'm out to empower women, but I'm definitely out to say, 'F*** off, haters.' I've changed the narrative from 'I'm 67' to 'I'm only 67'. I'll wear swimwear if I live until I'm 97. And if you don't like it, don't look at my pictures. 'There's a lot of misogyny out there, too. So, there's an element of devilment in me as well, which is to say, 'Don't you ever tell any woman what she can and can't wear.' We had Christie Brinkley on Loose Women recently. She's 71 and looks unbelievable.' Denise, who shares sons Matty, lead vocalist in The 1975, and actor Louis, with her ex-husband Tim Healy, has worked hard on her confidence — but she says the starting point was giving up alcohol 13 years ago. The star had already risen to fame in acting roles including Rovers Return landlady Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street and teacher Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road, and she's now been famous for more years than she hasn't. 'I can't really remember a time before,' she says. 'It's just how it is for our family. 'Matthew is obviously really famous, and my other son, Louis, is playing the lead in Stranger Things in the West End. I go to the stage door and he's surrounded by people. 'I've always said to the boys, 'You're there because of those people, be as polite and respectful as you can be.'' When Denise got sober, she admits she quickly became 'in danger of replacing one addiction with another' — food. She was binge eating, she says, but signing up to LighterLife was about far more than shifting the extra two and-a-half stones. 'LighterLife was the only company talking about the emotional side of eating, and using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to completely change my relationship with food. She continues, 'I was very newly sober so many of the things that I was learning through CBT, I was able to apply to my sobriety also.' The repercussions of giving up booze spread far wider than just herself, though. 'My children, my marriage, everything, is down to my sobriety,' she says. 'It's given my children and my stepson, Lewis, the wings to fly without worrying about me. I'm proud of the people I have created as a friendship group around me. That's got to be something down to me? That I still have the same friends I had years ago, and that they love me and they support me. 'I'm proud of some of the things I've done as an actress. Terminator star died agonising 'lingering' death after horrific home accident
A rising Hollywood star was found dead by his friends in the early hours of the morning after he failed to turn up to a rehearsal - he had endured an agonising death it transpired upon investigation and was also hiding a chronic illness Best known for his roles as navigator Pavel Chekov in the Star Trek franchise reboot and Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation, up and coming actor Anton Yelchin's future in Hollywood was looking very bright indeed. However the young star's life was tragically cut short at just 27 years old when he was involved in an horrific car accident. Confirming the news of his death to the Mirror in 2016, his publicist Jennifer Allen said in a statement: "Actor Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning. His family requests you respect their privacy at this time." The much-loved actor, who had starred in TV shows such as NYPD, ER and Curb Your Enthusiasm, was expected at a rehearsal at 11pm on the Saturday night but failed to turn up. Wimbledon star Flavio Cobolli's mysterious girlfriend and vow to 'stay alone in life' His worried friends discovered him in the early hours of 19 June 2016 dead outside his San Fernando Valley home. He was pinned between his car and a security fence. Pictures from the scene showed the bent bars of the metal gate. It's thought after leaving his home he had got out of his Jeep Cherokee to check his locked gate for mail and the vehicle rolled backwards down the steep driveway, trapping him. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office identified the cause of death as 'blunt traumatic asphyxia'. His heartbroken co-star Zachary Quinto, who played Spock in the Star Trek films, wrote a tribute at the time. It read: "Our dear friend. Our comrade. Our Anton. One of the most open and intellectually curious people I have ever had the pleasure to know. So enormously talented and generous of heart. Wise beyond his years. And gone before his time. All love and strength to his family at this impossible time of grief." Star Trek director JJ Abrams also penned a heartfelt tribute. "You were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren't here nearly long enough. Missing you... JJ." A lawsuit later stated: "Anton Yelchin was crushed and lingered alive for some time, trapped and suffocating until his death." The manufacturer of the Grand Cherokee was reportedly aware certain models had problems with 'rollaway' incidents, with drivers being unsure if they were parked or in gear. At the time of Anton's death, the roll away problem had been tied to at least 68 injuries, 266 crashes and 308 reports of property damage. Unfortunately a software patch didn't reach dealers until after his accident. Fiat Chrysler and his family eventually reached an out of court settlement, with the manufacturer saying it was "pleased" to have reached an "amicable resolution" in the matter. The car company also extended its "deepest sympathies" to the Yelchin family for their tragic loss. Born in Russia, Anton emigrated to the USA with his parents, celebrated Russian figure skaters Victor and Irina Yelchin, at six months old. He had a love for TV and movies from a young age and in 2001, at just 11 years old, he landed a role in Hearts in Atlantis opposite Sir Antony Hopkins. He found early success in Indie films before landing his parts in Star Trek and Terminator. After his death, in 2019 Love Antosha - a film about Anton's life was released. It features personal footage, archives, letters and interviews with leading Hollywood stars who knew him, such as Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe and Simon Pegg. The film also revealed he was secretly suffering with the chronic and inherited illness cystic fibrosis. The genetic condition causes damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs and shortens life expectancy. Love Antosha's director Garret Price told Fox News: "The first thing that surprised me was his chronic illness, which he was secretly dealing with throughout his career. And that in itself was totally admirable. No one knew about it. Even some of his closest friends didn't know about it until he passed away." Anton's parents remain committed to preserving his legacy. They chose the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where industry greats such as Rudolph Valentino, Judy Garland and John Huston were laid to rest as his final resting place. They erected a life-size bronze figure of the young star and are seen nearly every day at his grave. "I've never encountered a vigil like theirs," co-owner Tyler Cassity told Variety for its profile on the cemetery.

Nicola is seen clutching Brooklyn's hand as they made their way off the yacht and she looked strained. And this prompted Judi to recognise that Brooklyn's natural protective nature has kicked in amid the feud with his family. In an exclusive chat with the Mirror, Judi explains: "With her distant, expressionless eye gaze and her hand either clutching Brooklyn's arm or encased in his hand, Nicola is looking like the tragic heroine here, perhaps wanting to suggest some vulnerability and strain behind her normally cool and confident exterior." She added: "This is a look that might make most caring husbands wary and trigger their protective side, which is what appears to have happened with Brooklyn here. "While his wife walks along in her dramatic black fur tippet and with her hand placed on her bag to provide an emphatic and perhaps symbolic display of her wedding rings, Brooklyn looks more relaxed and dominant." Judi continued: "Clutching her hand in his with his, with the back of his hand showing fully and the wrist bent in a protective clasp. His mood looks confident and even rather upbeat here as though he enjoys being the strong guy in the relationship.
