Among them, Green Chef bills itself as 'the number one meal kit for clean eating' with its emphasis on organic ingredients and various dietary preferences, including keto, vegetarian, and gluten-free.
As someone who values high-quality produce and enjoys experimenting in the kitchen, I put Green Chef to the test. I received three meals as part of the service: oven-baked cheesy black beans and rice, beef tenderloin with porcini cream sauce, and garlic-thyme pork chops.
Having tried various subscription boxes over the years, from HelloFresh to Blue Apron, I was curious to see how Green Chef measured up and if I could tell the difference between them and the latter's organic ingredients. Here's how it fared in my kitchen.
How I tested

Passers-by paused to watch recordings of loved ones' reading excerpts from the notes at the free installation to commemorate VJ Day. One message, heard at the launch in central London on Tuesday, said: 'I'll think of you wherever you are, if it be near or far. I'll think of you. We'll meet again someday, when dreams come true.' Another line, from a doctor in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, read: 'Our dreams have finally come true. The nightmare is over.' VJ Day on August 15 marks the anniversary of Japan's surrender to the Allies following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, effectively ending the Second World War. Veronica Silander's father was an RAF airman and prisoner of war in Batavia, now Jakarta in Indonesia, and wrote his letter around two months after he was captured. It was the first message Ms Silander's mother had received from Maurice Read since he was taken and it included the line: 'So once again, do not worry please. I am OK and intend to remain so.' As the letters played on the large screens behind, Ms Silander told the PA news agency: 'The youngsters need to know about (VJ Day), I think it's often in the shadow of VE Day. 'I think probably 80 years, you know, even people like myself are not going to be around that had direct contact with somebody, so I think we should mark it.' She added: 'I think my mother must have been very distressed to know that he was still a prisoner when all the celebration was going on.' Her father rarely spoke about the war but would say 'when you woke up in the morning, you didn't know who was going to be dead beside you'. Ms Silander knows little more than that he trained in Auckland, New Zealand, and was captured two weeks after they were taken to Singapore by sea. Families received leaflets telling them 'do not ask the veterans about the war', she said. 'I think they just wanted them to come home and forget about it,' she added. John Sanderson served with the Royal Navy in the Far East between 1944 and 1946, and his letter to his fiance included the line 'we'll meet again someday, when dreams come true'. His son, Brian Sanderson, told PA: 'My father always said VJ Day was forgotten.' He would tell his wife that while people were dancing on VE Day 'I had kamikaze pilots coming down on me still'. VJ Day was hardly marked until recently, Mr Sanderson said, adding that his parents did not often speak about the war. 'That's the sad thing, is that we never asked them, they never spoke about it, and the stories have gone – I have no-one left from the Second World War,' he said. The installation runs until Saturday at Outernet, near Tottenham Court Road station, and was organised in partnership with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

This cottage- garden favourite is renowned for its vigorous and sprawling root systems, which can extend both deep and wide. ‌ When left unchecked, the roots will hunt for any available gaps or fissures in foundations to infiltrate and potentially trigger structural harm. However, trimming wisteria is crucial not only to manage the plant's strength but also for gardeners hoping to boost its flowering potential. ‌ Most people understand they need to cut back wisteria in August when the blooms are at their finest, but they can make the error of trimming too extensively, reports the Express. ‌ This will rob the vine of more spectacular flowers, though it's easily avoided by adhering to one simple rule, according to National Greenhouse's indoor gardening expert, Tom Hilton. He revealed that the perfect length for wisteria pruning is five buds, emphasising how vital proper cutting is. Tom told enthusiastic gardeners: "After your plant has begun to flower, around July or August time, it's time to break out your clippers and get to your garden." The gardening specialist added: "Pruning around five buds is a great amount, as it leaves plenty to continue growing while encouraging flower growth, rather than a continued expansion of the plant itself. "It's also the best way to keep your plant in check, not just to prevent it from overgrowing, but also to keep it looking tidy and presentable." ‌ Trimming wisteria isn't just about encouraging new growth; it significantly impacts the plant's overall structure too. Annelise Brilli, from the horticultural team at Thompson and Morgan, explained: "Without pruning, wisteria will grow into a huge, tangled vine composed mainly of very long stems clothed with leaves. ‌ "Pruning controls these highly vigorous climbers, concentrating growth into a permanent woody framework covered in masses of short side shoots which will be crowded with flowering buds." Nevertheless, she warned against following the five-bud rule too rigidly, stressing that it's typically equivalent to roughly 20cm, which might be a more reliable measurement for shorter shoots. These are less vigorous shoots that naturally become woody and develop plenty of flower buds on their own. Regarding the ideal timing for pruning wisteria, Tom recommended gardeners wait until peak blooming season before beginning to cut. He explained that August represents the perfect moment to prune wisteria since it effectively signals the conclusion of the flowering period and a natural break in the growth cycle to provide the plant with a "refresh" ahead of new growth emerging. The National Greenhouse gardening specialist noted that pruning enables you to direct new bud growth along your desired route, preventing them from potentially overwhelming your garden or house exterior.

Teenagers across the UK have no idea how to boil an egg or mash potatoes - and have been branded 'Gen Air-Fryer." Nearly 4 in 5 parents say they're concerned about their children's lack of cooking skills, with half of 16–18-year-olds admitting they've never used basic kitchen tools such as a rolling pin, potato masher, or even a whisk. Instead of preparing meals from scratch, teens are turning to quick fixes like instant noodles, takeaways, microwave meals, and air fryer dishes. Two-thirds of parents say they still do all the cooking for their teens, with 73% feeling they had better kitchen skills at the same age. Over half of teens say they want to improve their kitchen confidence, and nearly 4 in 5 regularly consume food content on social media. In fact, a third have hundreds of recipe videos saved on their 'For You' pages. The research also revealed the skills teens want to learn in the kitchen, include: Making pizza dough (45%) Making fried chicken (31%) Making Yorkshire puddings from scratch (30%) Making homemade smash burgers (28%) Cooking a perfect, medium-rare steak (21%) Making homemade sushi (19%) Properly carving a chicken (19%) To help bridge the skills gap and prepare young adults for culinary independence, HelloFresh has launched 'HelloFresh Skills' - a new series of guided recipes designed to build confidence in the kitchen. Featuring six core cooking categories - Batter, Baking, Dough, Protein, Potato, and Sauce - each recipe is rated by difficulty and designed to help families cook, learn, and eat together. Home cook Vogue Williams hosted a live cooking demo of the new Skills recipe range at The Great British Food Festival, showing her support for the campaign and encouraging families to get hands-on in the kitchen. Vogue said, 'When I left home for uni, I had a limited selection of meals I'd cook for myself and didn't experiment much in the kitchen. Since then, I've built up my repertoire of go-to recipes I cook for the family, like smashed potatoes and pesto pasta, but I still think it's so important to keep learning and trying new things.
