Former Alabama track star Eliud Kipsang dead at 28 after suffering cardiac arrest
Kipsang, who was born in Kenya and is a current holder of several program records, went into cardiac arrest on Friday, June 6, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up on behalf of his family. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington, but died just days later on Tuesday.
"We are heartbroken by the passing of Eliud Kipsang, one of the most gifted athletes ever to wear crimson and white," head coach Dan Waters said in a statement provided by the university.
"His impact on our program extended far beyond records and championships; he was a beloved teammate, a brother to so many and a dear friend to me, personally. On behalf of the entire Alabama family, we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones. The running community has lost a remarkable soul."
Kipsang won gold at the 2021 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in men's 1,500m and the SEC Cross Country Championships. That same year, he was named SEC Runner of the Year.
The following season he set the collegiate record in the men's 1,500m, and his time of 3:33.74 still remains a top five collegiate time.
Kipsang still holds three program records in both indoor and outdoor events and has six top-10, all-time placements in Alabama history.

Auburn claims 4 additional 'national championships' on its football resume
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn is claiming four additional football national titles and will call itself a nine-time champion moving forward. The Tigers, for decades, boasted titles in 1957 and 2010. They also claimed the 1913, 1983 and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications. Now, though, athletic director John Cohen is adding titles from 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 to the program's resume. It's laudable by some and laughable by others. 'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships,' Cohen told On3 for a story announcing the decision Tuesday. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches and teams from Auburn's proud history. 'Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation.' The Associated Press, which began handing out its annual national championship trophy in 1936, credits Auburn with two titles: 1957 and 2010. Banners recognizing those seasons hang inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other titles Auburn is claiming have varying degrees of validity. For example, the Bowl Championship Series existed in 2004, and the Tigers failed to make the title game. They finished 12-0 and third in the rankings behind undefeated USC and undefeated Oklahoma. Alabama football starters named to 2025 Comeback Player of the Year watch list
With 11 days remaining until Alabama football's season opener at Florida State, two Crimson Tide starters were among those named to the 2025 Comeback Player of the Year watch list Tuesday. Fifth-year senior linebacker Deontae Lawson and junior defensive back Keon Sabb both made the list a year after injuries cut short their respective seasons a year ago. Lawson sustained a season-ending ACL injury in Alabama's 24-3 loss at Oklahoma on Nov. 23. In 11 games last season, he was second on the team in tackles with 76 (36 solo) and had seven tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble. Lawson was also named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Bednarik Award, as well as the Butkus Award and Nagurski Trophy. Sabb, who officially transferred to Alabama from Michigan in February 2024, got off to a promising start last year but was limited to seven starts after a season-ending foot injury in Alabama's 24-17 loss at Tennessee on Oct. 19. Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack praised Sabb for being ahead of schedule earlier this month after fall camp opened. "Keon is doing a really good job," Wommack said back on Aug. 2. "He has really pushed. Our training staff's done a great job with him. I think he's ahead of really every marker that we had in the offseason for him, and we weren't sure if he was going to be able to go to the level that he's going right now at the beginning of fall camp, but he is and he's here. "I don't know if I could put a number on it exactly, but he's out there playing with our guys, so he's comfortable enough to be able to do that," Wommack added. "Sometimes those injuries, you just have to build a callous of coming back and I think that's something he's really pushing himself to right now to get ready for the season." Sabb recorded 39 tackles (24 solo), one tackle for loss, four pass breakups and two interceptions a year ago. Both interceptions came in the Crimson Tide's season-opening 63-0 win over Western Kentucky on Aug. 31. About the Comeback Player of the Year Award The Comeback Player of the Year is presented annually by College Sports Communications in association with the Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl. Per the award's official website: "Since 2018, the Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list has been comprised of 75 student-athletes who overcame an injury, illness or other circumstance in the previous year. Each player returned to full health for the 2025 season and showcased their skills, helping their teams compete to their highest potential." Three players were awarded the Comeback Player of the Year in 2024: South Carolina running back Rocket Sanders, Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough, and Utah State defensive back Ike Larsen.
