MP tourist couple goes missing in Cherrapunjee

Time of India26-05-2025
Shillong: A couple from Madhya Pradesh, Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raja Raghuvanshi, have been reported missing from Sohra (Cherrapunjee) since last week. SP (East Khasi Hills) Vivek Syiem confirmed on Monday that search operations are underway.
The last sighting of the tourists was on May 22. They had hired a scooter from Keating Road, Shillong, and travelled to Mawlakhait, before proceeding to Nongriat where they stayed at Shipara Homestay.
"They left Nongriat early in the morning at around 5:30 am the next day and returned to Mawlakhait. However, the scooter was not found at Mawlakhait. It was later reported abandoned near Golden Pines Dhaba in Sohra Rim by community members on May 23," the SP said.
The local police received the abandoned scooter, which still had its key inserted. Subsequently, the police control room was notified, and the relatives of the couple filed a missing persons report.
"All stakeholders, including nearby villages and local authorities, have been alerted. Police teams and home guards have been deployed in surrounding areas to trace their whereabouts," the SP said.
Asked about potential foul play, Syiem said, "At this point, it's too early to speculate.

Our priority is to locate them. They were last seen in Nongriat and reportedly left early morning. We are trying to trace their movements since then."
The SP said the couple had arranged the scooter rental for four days, and "it's possible they lost their way".
Syiem added that tourist advisories were previously issued. "In fact, they had taken a guide from Mawlakhait to Mawriat. However, on their return journey, they were unaccompanied. The scooter being found abandoned with the key adds to the mystery, and efforts are ongoing to locate them."

Activist protesting from temple top falls to death

Trichy: A disabled social activist accidentally fell to his death from the tower of Viralimalai Murugan temple in Pudukottai on Friday after protesting for hours for the removal of encroachments around the temple. K Arumugam, 42, from Kodumbalur near Viralimalai was an orthopaedically challenged person. Sources said he had been demanding removal of encroachments around the Murugan temple, and also setting up a sanctuary for peafowl in the temple. Arumugam had taken up risky protests earlier, like climbing a cellphone tower last year, for emphasising his demands. As they were unfulfilled, he continued his demonstrations. Around 7am on Friday, Arumugam climbed the gopuram of Viralimalai Murugan temple. After reaching the kalasam area, he unfurled the national flag. Seeing his stunt, people on the ground urged him to come down. However, he refused and stated his demands. Officials from revenue, police, and HR&CE departments arrived and attempted to pacify him through phone. They assured him that his demands will be considered. Arumugam demanded that the collector come to the spot so that he could discuss his terms. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Around noon, fire and rescue services personnel started to climb the temple gopuram. City swimmer crosses English Channel in 15 hours

Navi Mumbai: Anshuman Jhingran, one of India's prolific long-distance swimmers and a resident of Navi Mumbai, successfully crossed the English Channel, completing the gruelling 36 km swim from Samphire Hoe, Dover to the rocky cliffs near Cap Gris Nez in France, clocking 15 hours and 49 minutes. This achievement marks his sixth ocean challenge and brings him just one stroke away from completing the Oceans Seven. Jhingran overcame the English Channel's treacherous waters, contending with unpredictable undersea currents that slowed his progress. "As I neared the French coast, a sudden shift in currents delayed my finish by over an hour. Summoning every reserve of endurance, I ultimately made landfall on the rocky cliffs to complete the crossing," Jhingran said. The swim was piloted by Eddie Spelling and officially ratified by an observer from the Channel Swimming and Piloting Association (CSPF). Jhingran trains at the Agnel Swimming Pool, Vashi. "My coach has played a key role in my success story," he added. "The Channel tested every ounce of my mental and physical strength," Jhingran said. With this crossing, Jhingran has now completed six out of the seven swims in the Oceans Seven–the marathon swimming equivalent of the Seven Summits in mountaineering. He will soon attempt the Tsugaru Strait in Japan, aiming to become the youngest male swimmer in history to complete the Oceans Seven.
