Soop teams up with LoL legend Faker for ad campaign

Soop has partnered with esports organization T1 to launch a brand advertising campaign featuring League of Legends world champion Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok, the Korean streaming platform announced Wednesday.
Soop, formerly AfreecaTV, has been strengthening its platform competitiveness by launching global services and exploring new business areas such as artificial intelligence.
T1 players have for years showcased their gameplay and communicated with viewers by livestreaming on Soop. In particular, Faker made a name for himself on Soop behind his streaming nickname "Gojeonpa" before making his professional debut.
'T1 players, among many (League of Legends Championship Korea) players, are partners who have created content together while navigating both professional player and streamer domains,' said Soop.
'Their approach of producing diverse content and consistently communicating with users aligns perfectly with Soop's platform direction.'
Soop uploaded a 12-second teaser video ahead of the full-scale advertisement campaign, featuring only Faker and the date of May 16. Before the main promotional video drops, Soop plans to release behind-the-scenes footage from the advertisement filming process on May 7.

President Lee Jae Myung has met with a group of creatives behind the smash-hit Netflix animated film "KPop Demon Hunters" and pledged to cultivate South Korea's cultural sector into one of the country's core industries. Appearing on Arirang TV's prerecorded program "K-Pop: The Next Chapter" aired Wednesday, Lee sat down with Maggie Kang, Korean-Canadian co-creator of the global animation phenomenon, alongside a panel of creatives, including TWICE members Jihyo and Jeongyeon, and DJ and music producer who were involved in the project, as well as music critic Kim Young-dae. "The opportunity to show the power of Korean culture is beginning in a full-fledged manner," Lee said. "By building solid foundations, we will make (the cultural sector) a key industry." "I agree with concerns that South Korea's cultural industry may appear glamorous on the surface but is void inside with its roots decaying," he said. "The government will build strong foundations, starting now." The president also noted that the political circle should not attempt to take control of the cultural sector, apparently referring to the creation of blacklists of cultural organizations or artists critical of the government in the past to exclude them from support. "It is the government's duty to create a free environment," Lee added, noting that surveillance and regulation can hurt the cultural sector. The global success of "KPop Demon Hunters," produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Netflix, has raised calls for broader support for Korean companies in developing original content and intellectual property rights in the cultural sector. Lee added that one of the most impressive characters in the film was Derpy the tiger. SK On-Ford joint battery venture in Kentucky seeks customer diversification amid lagging EV growth BlueOval SK, a 50:50 joint venture between Korean battery maker SK On and American automaker Ford, has finally begun commercial production of electric vehicle batteries at its first Kentucky plant amid the prolonged stagnation of the EV market growth. According to BlueOval SK on Tuesday, its first-ever battery to be delivered to Ford rolled off the assembly line at the Kentucky 1 factory in Glendale. The batteries from this production will power the American automaker's electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning. 'We are proud to build batteries at our Kentucky 1 facility that will power next-generation electric vehicles,' BlueOval SK CEO Michael Adams said. 'The start of production is a significant milestone that strengthens our position in the electric vehicle battery market.' BlueOval SK added that the Kentucky 1 plant will also produce batteries for Ford's current E-Transit electric van. SK On and Ford joined hands to set up BlueOval SK in 2022 as they announced a $11.4 billion investment to build three battery production facilities: two in Glendale, Kentucky and one in Stanton, Tennessee. 'Today, Kentucky marks a historic milestone four years in the making as production officially begins at two of the largest battery plants in the world, set to deliver EV batteries that will transform the automotive industry and the future of our commonwealth,' said Kentucky Governor Andrew Beshear. 'This remains the single largest investment in the history of our state, and it sparked a surge of new investment and job announcements that placed Kentucky at the center of EV-related innovation. I am grateful to Ford and SK On leaders for believing in Kentucky and our workforce.' The joint venture's first commercial production has been delayed due to the EV market's slower-than-anticipated growth rate over the last few years. Ford announced earlier this month that it will delay the launch of two new EVs — next-generation models of the F-150 Lightning and E-Transit — to 2028 but instead shift focus to smaller, more affordable cars to launch a midsize, four-door electric pickup in 2027. With the stalling EV demand, Adams, CEO of BlueOval SK, said in an interview with Bloomberg that both SK On and Ford are looking for opportunities for new business and securing new clients is 'fairly high.' There have been rumors that BlueOval SK was nearing a contract to sell batteries to Nissan, but no confirmations were made.

K-pop agency names third CEO in under four years Ador, a music label under Hybe and home to NewJeans, said Wednesday it has named Lee Do-kyong as its new CEO, replacing Kim Ju-young after just one year. The label said Lee's appointment reflects a pivot toward reinforcing the agency's role in planning and managing artists' music and performances. Lee was previously vice president of Hybe's IPX division, which develops artist IP-based businesses such as merchandising, licensing and fan experiences. The outgoing Kim, a former HR executive, was appointed in August 2024 following the ouster of founding head Min Hee-jin, who remains in a legal dispute with Hybe over stock options following an alleged attempt to seize control of the subsidiary. 'Having deemed the previous restructuring goals achieved, the board is now moving to an operational model focused on quickly supporting artists' activities and driving business expansion,' Ador said in a statement. Lee joined Hybe (then Big Hit Entertainment) in 2019 and helped steer corporate vision, business strategy and new ventures. In 2022, she took charge of IPX to oversee merchandising, including pop-up stores and light stick operations. Lee also spearheaded 'The City,' a large-scale project that extended fan experiences across entire cities where Hybe artist concerts were being held. With Lee at the helm, Ador says it has built a more agile structure to support its roster. The label manages girl group NewJeans — currently in a contractual dispute with Hybe — and in June launched the '2025 Ador Boys Global Audition' to recruit members for a next-generation boy band.
