Egypt condemns repeated Israeli attacks on Syria, Lebanon - Foreign Affairs

Al-Ahram Weekly4 days ago
Egypt condemned on Wednesday the repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanese and Syrian territories, describing them as a blatant violation of the sovereignty of the two Arab nations and a breach of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt stressed the utmost importance of respecting the sovereignty of Lebanon and Syria, expressing its complete rejection of any interference in their internal affairs.
Egypt also affirmed the necessity of preserving the unity and territorial integrity of both nations.
The statement further emphasized that the repeated Israeli violations deepen tensions and instability in the two Arab countries and the whole region.
The attacks occur at a critical time as intensive regional and international efforts, in which Egypt is a key player, are ongoing to de-escalate the tensions and restore regional security and stability, the statement read.
This comes as Israel carried out airstrikes against Syrian government forces in the predominantly Druze city of Sweida on Tuesday.
The Israeli attacks followed the breaking out of clashes between residents of the city and government forces, with Tel Aviv vowing to protect the Druze population.
In response, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it holds Israel fully responsible for the attack and its consequences, vowing to protect all citizens, including the Druze.
On the Lebanese front, Israel carried out attacks in eastern Lebanon on Tuesday, killing at least 12 people, including five Hezbollah members.
"Israeli warplanes conducted more than 10 strikes on multiple locations in the early hours of Tuesday," Lebanese security sources said.

Israel orders evacuations in central Gaza as ceasefire talks stall and military offensive widens - War on Gaza

The Israeli military published new evacuation warnings for areas of central Gaza on Sunday, in one of the few areas the military has rarely operated with ground troops. The evacuation cuts access between the city of Deir al-Balah and the southern cities of Rafah and Khan Younis in the narrow enclave. The announcement comes as Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar, but international mediators say there have been no breakthroughs. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stressed that expanding Israeli military operations in Gaza will pressure Hamas to negotiate, though negotiations have been stalled for months. The area of Gaza under the evacuation order is also where many international organisations attempting to distribute aid are located. The organisations did not immediately comment on the evacuation warnings. Military spokesman Avichay Adraee warned that the military will attack 'with intensity' against militants. He called for residents, including those sheltering in tents, to head to the Muwasi area, a desolate tent camp on Gaza's southern shore that the Israeli military has designated a humanitarian zone. Gaza's population of more than 2 million Palestinians are in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. The Israeli war began on Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 58,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. More than half of the dead have been women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas government, but the U.N. and other international organisations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties. The Hostages Family Forum, a grassroots organisation that represents many of the families of captives, condemned the evacuation announcement and demanded that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli military explain what they hope to accomplish in the area of central Gaza, accusing Israel of operating without a clear war plan. 'Enough! The Israeli people overwhelmingly want an end to the fighting and a comprehensive agreement that will return all of the hostages,' the forum said. On Saturday night, during the weekly protest, tens of thousands of protesters marched in Tel Aviv, demonstrating for an end to the war. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Awqaf Minister thanks President Sisi for supporting mosques, religious sites

Awqaf Minister Osama al-Azhari expressed gratitude to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for his keen interest in Al Al-Bayt mosques and general care for places of worship across Egypt, in line with the New Republic's standards. He made these remarks during the inauguration of the first phase of development at the Al-Arif Billah Sidi Ibrahim al-Desouki Mosque in Desouk, Kafr al-Sheikh, in northern Egypt. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Kafr al-Sheikh Governor Alaa Abdel Moaati, Egypt's Mufti Nazir Ayyad, Al-Azhar University President Dr. Salama Dawood, and other officials. This initiative is part of the Awqaf (Endowments) Ministry's plan to upgrade major mosques and religious sites, enhancing their cultural and service standards. The minister and his accompanying delegation performed Friday prayers at the mosque, where Imam Mohamed Soheil delivered a sermon titled 'Unity is Strength,' emphasizing community cohesion, unity, and love. The prayer was followed by a remembrance gathering and prayers for Egypt and the Arab and other Islamic nations, in an atmosphere of devotion and tranquility. Kafr El-Sheikh's Governor praised the visit, highlighting the state's ongoing support for religious sites. Dr. Dawood commended the Awqaf Ministry's leadership in caring for Ahl Al-Bayt mosques that are historically associated with or named after the family of the Prophet Muhammad. The first phase of the site's development, covering 5,000 square meters at a cost of six million LE, is now complete. It included the installation of granite and marble flooring, a central fountain, landscaping, parking facilities, visitor seating, and aesthetic protective fencing. The second phase will commence immediately to finalize the project. After the inauguration ceremony, the minister viewed a visual presentation of the development stages and encouraged sharing the documentary on the ministry's official channels, praising the efforts of those involved.
