Ethan Peck Opens Up About What Sets His Spock Apart in STAR TREK from Leonard Nimoy's Iconic Legacy — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant07-07-2025
Taking on the role of Spock is like stepping into sci-fi royalty. When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds launched in 2022, it didn't just revive a classic era of Trek, it brought back characters who've been etched into the pop culture DNA for decades. Chief among them: the ever-logical, ever-iconic Spock.
Leonard Nimoy's original performance is untouchable for many fans. So when Ethan Peck inherited the role, expectations were sky-high. But instead of trying to mimic Nimoy, Peck leaned into something different, something more human, more uncertain, and surprisingly… funny.
At the recent Tribeca Film Festival premiere for Strange New Worlds Season 3, Peck spoke about what distinguishes his take on the beloved Vulcan, telling /Film:
"I would say that they've really brought a comedic quality to the Spock that I play in Strange New Worlds. I think they found that I might have an aptitude for him in kind of uncomfortable situations.
'And I think the writer just tries to put me as the actor playing Spock in uncomfortable situations, which I think is a great device and gimmick. So maybe that — they know that I kind of understand why he's finding himself [in these situations]. So, maybe his comedic nature ... and that he's not [self-aware] about it."
It's a interesting evolution. Where Nimoy's Spock delivered humor through dry logic and razor-sharp timing, Peck's Spock is funnier because he's awkward, still learning how to navigate the push and pull between his Vulcan discipline and human emotion.
And that's exactly the point, according to series co-creator Akiva Goldsman, who also weighed in, saying:
"I think that those of us who started with TOS have an association with the most logical time in Spock's life. But if you think about Spock, not just in TOS and before [Strange New Worlds], if you think about Spock, as he carries through the motion pictures, as he carries through the end of [The Next Generation], we start to see that actually his whole life has been a struggle with identity.
'And how he sees himself and the sweet treachery of emotion. And so Ethan gets to do a lot more of that. So, we fill out the personality of Spock and his life's journey."
It's a fun creative choice to show us a Spock in transition. One who hasn't yet mastered his inner conflict, and this season, according to those who've seen the premiere, digs even deeper into that tension, with some standout moments that test both Spock's emotional limits and Peck's range.
While the series is set to conclude with Season 5, there's still plenty of story left to tell. And if Season 3 is any indication, Peck's Spock is only becoming more complex and more compelling as he edges closer to the version we all grew up with.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 premieres July 17, 2025, on Paramount+.

Aaron Phypers claims Denise Richards made up abuse claims to cover up affair

NEW YORK — Aaron Phypers is claiming that Denise Richards manufactured allegations of abuse as a means to distract from an affair that he uncovered earlier this year. Less than two weeks after filing for divorce from the 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' alum, 52-year-old Phypers told TMZ during a virtual interview that he learned his wife was cheating when he found illicit texts on her laptop back in February. He says he confronted Richards who begged Phypers not to leave her, assuring him she was 'so sorry' and 'won't do that again.' They decided to stay together, but Phypers says he later found texts going up until late May. Fast forward to July 4 weekend, Phypers claims Richards stole his phone and denied having it — at one point even 'hitting' and 'scratching' him when he questioned her about the device. Phypers says he found the phone a day later smashed in their recycling bin, but she continued to deny having anything to do with it. Asked why he thinks Richards would destroy his phone, Phypers says the device had photos of all the texts that would prove her alleged affair. Phypers filed for divorce on July 7, citing irreconcilable differences and asking for spousal support. Richards followed that earlier this week by requesting a temporary restraining order against Phypers, noting allegations of longstanding abuse including claims that he would 'violently choke' her and 'slam [her] head into the bathroom towel rack.' The court filing, obtained by TMZ, included a photo from 2022 showing Richards with a black eye, which she alleges her husband gave her. Phypers meanwhile insists it was the result of Richards taking a drunken fall at his office and hitting her head on 'a pole with a light on it.' Phypers claims other people were also present and can attest to the incident, adding that Richards 'falls down a lot and it's embarrassing. … It's scary.' Phypers asserts that he has never 'hit [his] wife in the face, ever,' but does admit to having forcefully grabbed her on various occasions. 'I grabbed and restrained her when she was punching Sami,' he claims of the 21-year-old daughter Richards shares with ex-husband Charlie Sheen. The exes also share daughter Lola, 20. Phypers says that Richards' allegations have put him in 'grave danger,' particularly on a financial level. 'The fact that she put this thing about me beating her, I'm like devastated,' he adds. 'I wanted to work it out. But she's gotta get help. It's not for me now, it's for herself and her daughters. I'm really worried about Eloise. It's not a good situation. … She's gotta get cleaned up and be responsible and own what she's doing.' Though Phypers confirmed in February that he'd become the adoptive father to Richards' 14-year-old adopted daughter Eloise, court documents say the spouses have 'no minor children' together. The Daily News has reached out to a rep for Richards.

Tech firm CEO resigns amid Coldplay concert kiss cam controversy

Coldplay singer Chris Martin pointed out an embarrassing moment during a Wednesday night concert in Massachusetts that caught Astronomer chief executive officer Andy Byron with a woman other than his wife on a "kiss cam" shot. File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo July 19 (UPI) -- Software developer Astronomer says former Chief Executive Officer Andy Byron resigned amid controversy following his attendance at a recent Coldplay concert. New York-based Astronomer confirmed Byron's resignation on Saturday and said co-founder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy is its interim chief executive officer while its board of directors seeks a permanent replacement for Byron. "Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding," Astronomer officials said Saturday in a post on X. "Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met." Byron is married but was caught attending a Coldplay concert with another woman on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The stadium's "kiss cam" zeroed in on Byron with his arms wrapped around a woman standing in front of him during the concert, NBC News reported. When they realized they were on the kiss cam, Byron ducked out of the camera shot, while the unidentified woman covered her face. Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin noticed the pair's reaction during the concert and opined: "Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy." The video of the moment went viral, and social media sleuths identified the man as Byron. Astronomer placed him on leave on Friday before accepting his resignation a day later, according to NBC News. The tech firm is a relatively small company with fewer than 500 employees and noted the viral incident's impact on its operations. "While awareness of our company may have changed overnight, our product and our work for our customers have not," Astronomer said in its X post. "We're continuing to do what we do best: helping our customers with their toughest data and AI problems."

MLB broadcaster cracks Chris Martin joke amid Coldplay 'kiss cam' drama that led to CEO's resignation

Chris Martin has been the talk of social media this weekend after an embarrassing jumbotron moment during a Coldplay concert caught the CEO of Astronomer and its head of human resources cozying up. A different Chris Martin took the mound for the Texas Rangers against the Detroit Tigers Friday night. Tigers broadcaster Jason Benetti used the moment to reference the controversy. "CEOs beware …. Chris Martin is here. Out of the Rangers bullpen," Benetti said as Martin took the mound. Benetti was far from the only person in the sports world to poke fun at the moment. Martin has pitched in the majors since the 2014 season with the Colorado Rockies. He's played for the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox. He won a World Series with the Braves in 2021. He struck out one batter in his relief appearance, and the Rangers won the game, 2-0. Astronomer CEO Andy Byron resigned from his job Saturday. "As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding," the company said in a statement Saturday to Fox News. "Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and, recently, that standard was not met." Astronomer said Byron tendered his resignation, and the board of directors accepted. The unspecified relationship between Byron and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot was revealed to the nation Wednesday night when they were spotted by the concert's "kiss cam." Cabot hurriedly turned and covered her face, while Byron awkwardly ducked behind a stadium seat, catching Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin's gaze. "Oh, look at these two," Martin joked to the crowd. "All right, c'mon, you're Ok. Oh, what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy." A social media frenzy started almost immediately, which led to Byron's resignation.
