‘Hacks' stars and creators feel they're a family ‘forged in fire' after Covid, Hollywood strikes and LA fires

CNN03-04-2025

Themes like job loss, death, aging, family dysfunction and generational divide may not sound like comedy material, but the Emmy-winning series 'Hacks' manages to find the laughs around life's roadblocks.
Ahead of the Season 4 premiere next week, star Jean Smart – who plays feisty comedienne-turned-late night host Deborah Vance on the series – talked about how that dichotomy is drawn from real life at a recent press conference.
'We've all had that in our own lives. You know, tragedy and comedy. I mean, that's just what life is,' she shared, emphasizing the value of being able 'to do that and to still have the tone of the show be essentially kind of fun and joyous.'
'But then the reality of, there's always the flip side of the coin,' she added.
The cast and crew of 'Hacks' were in production on Season 1 during the Covid pandemic, they navigated the dual strikes that hobbled Hollywood in 2023, and faced the wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles earlier this year.
'I think we have been through a lot together,' the show's co-creator and costar Paul W. Downs said, pointing out that 'Hacks' is 'a show that was made pre-vaccine.'
'We started out wearing two masks and a shield, and being six feet away from each other. And I think it's kind of like we're forged in fire,' he continued. 'And I feel like what we've experienced as a family, as 'Hacks' family, has just made us closer. It's just made the work better.'
'I think every film and television show, they say is a miracle, and it's true,' Downs added. 'It takes a huge community of people. But I think, weirdly, when you're on a show or you're on a set where you do have all of these hurdles, and you can see them tangibly, it just bonds you and brings you closer together.'
Downs plays Deborah and Ava's overwhelmed agent Jimmy in 'Hacks.' Offscreen, he is married to series co-creator Lucia Aniello. (Jen Statsky is the third co-creator and writer on the series).
'Comedy and tragedy exists sometimes simultaneously in life,' Downs said. 'It weirdly has reflected, I think, the tone of the show, the things we've gone through because we're making a comedy, but we've been through, you know, pandemics and fires and deaths and all kinds of things.'
Wildfires are referenced in Season 4, which sees Deborah and company relocate from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in order for her to start hosting her late-night show. After an episode titled 'I Love LA,' a title card appears in tribute to the filming location used for Deborah's LA abode, a pink mansion built around 1930, according to Smart, that was destroyed in this year's fires.
'It's been sitting there and hasn't been touched by fire in 100 years almost. And it burned. And it was really sad,' Smart shared. 'We had just, just finished shooting there, I think the week before or something? And to envision those beautiful rooms and that beautiful fountain and the back, the yard and the couple that lived there and their dog – I mean, they're safe, thank God – but yeah, that was shocking.'
Einbinder highlighted how these experiences have brought the show team closer, some of whom she said have known each other since high school.
'We have a crew that is such a cohesive group. And every department is so close and there's so much love,' she said. 'We have, as a collective – beyond just us on the stage – we have as a collective come together and really gotten close in a way that I am told is not really the industry standard, frankly.'
'Like we all really go through it side by side. It's really, really special to be a part of it,' she later added. 'Tragedy, in the good times, throughout everything. Like we really have something special.'
Smart echoed the sentiment.
'I think that the crew is as proud of the show as we are, even though they don't get the accolades and the attention and the acknowledgment,' she observed. 'The fact that they virtually – almost to a man – come back every season because they like being on our show is really heartwarming, flattering.'
Season 4 of 'Hacks' premieres on Max on April 10 at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET. Max, like CNN, is a unit of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Art meets Pride at Orlando's Renaissance Theater Co.

The Renaissance Theater Co., or the Ren, as it's affectionately called, is a theater that goes beyond showcasing performances and provides a dynamic community initiative devoted to uplifting and empowering the LGBTQ+ community. Walking into the Renaissance Theater Co. on Princeton Street in Orlando is like being surrounded by art – costumes, stages and music are everywhere. Not only that, but the place is constantly changing its setup to accommodate whatever production they have. 'We've been trying to find those voices and uplift those voices in everything that we do. I'm really proud of the work we've done and I think we continue to do that today,' said Donald Rupe, co-founder of The Renaissance Theater Company. The theater officially opened its doors back in 2021. Since then, its performers, members and visitors alike have found a way to advocate for their community while consistently celebrating diversity through art. 'We've got an incredible response ever since we opened. It's been amazing,' Rupe said. 'We noticed right away that the people coming to this show are not the kinds of people that you traditionally see in many theaters across the country.' The Ren also offers a chance for younger performers to jumpstart or develop their careers. 'We're creating a space here to showcase the amazing talent that's in Orlando,' said Abby Cash, a choreographer from Texas who has been calling Central Florida home for years. 'It's been really cool. Experience and a growth experience for me.' As part of Pride Month, The Ren is debuting another new show: the Tony Award-winning musical 'Hair.' 'The story follows this group of hippies in the 1960s that are protesting against the Vietnam War, specifically against men being drafted,' said Bruno DeSouza, who plays Berger in the show. 'Then one of our best friends decides who wants to go for the sheer hope of it protecting us.' Throughout the year, the creative brains behind the operations at The Ren work on ways to bring brand-new shows and performances to the stage while also fostering an environment where each voice is heard and considered. 'It represents love and acceptance and diversity, especially in this production [Hair], and those are all things that The Ren takes very seriously,' said Rupe. 'I am proud every single day of what The Ren has become and what Renaissance Theater Company means for people.' The Renaissance Theater Company has performances scheduled all year long. The Traitors Cast Including Michael Rapaport Causes Backlash

Peacock just announced the cast of Season 4 of The Traitors, and so far, the response has not been great. You expect a random mix of celebrities for this show, but some fans think the show took things a step in the wrong direction by adding Michael Rapaport to the cast. If Peacock's goal was to get people talking, it definitely worked. Michael was one of 23 stars confirmed for Season 4 of The Traitors. If history repeats itself, there might be one or two late additions to the game as well. Either way, social media immediately lit up with reactions to seeing Michael in the lineup, and it's not because of his terrible acting skills. It's because of his extensive history of using racist language and sharing far-right talking points on his social media. 'Amazing Traitors cast sans Michael Rapaport. He's a piece of sh*t and it's extremely annoying that Bravo and Peacock keep giving him a platform,' wrote one Traitors fan. Another said, 'Peacock and NBC continuing to platform Michael Rapaport as he spews bigoted hateful ideology is so dangerous. I desperately need him to be the first murder #TheTraitorsUS.' Scroll through Twitter/X for as long as you want, and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone thrilled about having this man on the beloved, Emmy-winning show. Plenty of Traitors fans, however, are hoping to see him get kicked out of the castle sooner rather than later. 'Traitor or not, banish Michael Rapaport first,' one person quipped. Although most fans are bashing Peacock for including Michael, it's worth highlighting that there are some positive elements to this cast. They've got five Real Housewives in the cast, including the return of Dorinda Medley. There's also a wealth of LGBTQ representation, with Monet X Change, Kristen Kish, and Johnny Weir in the lineup. Let's hold out hope that it's enough to erase the stain. The Traitors Season 4 comes to Peacock in 2026. TELL US – WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE TRAITORS SEASON 4 CAST? And the Emmy goes to … Trea Turner? Documentary on Philadelphia Phillies star's ovation wins award.

PHILADELPHIA — And the Emmy goes to … Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner? Turner already won an NL batting title and a World Series championship ring in his 11-year MLB career. How about adding an Emmy Award to that trophy case? 'Trea Turner's an Emmy winner, absolutely,' sports documentary producer Kyle Thrash said. 'He definitely held it up like he owned it.' Turner may not actually have the award in hand to keep for good, but he got to hoist the real deal ahead of Friday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in a short celebration for the Emmy won for a best sports short documentary produced on the 2023 standing ovation credited with turning around his season. 'The Turnaround' won a sports Emmy in May, and Thrash and Phillies fan Jon McCann — whose personal struggles with mental health and kinship with Turner were the heart of the film — attended the game to show off their new bling to Turner. 'Cuz, we did it, huh?' McCann said as he shook Turner's hand on the field after batting practice. 'Trea Turner, we share an Emmy together.' Turner read the inscription at the bottom of the Emmy and promised fans he would wave to them in section 301 if he stole a base in Friday's game. 'We get to bring a trophy back to the ballpark tonight and share it with so many people that were involved in the standing ovation. It's pretty incredible,' Thrash said. Philly sports fans — often billed as some of the worst in sports — gave a slumping Turner standing ovations in at-bats throughout the weekend in an August 2023 series to show he had their full support. Turner was in the first season of an 11-year, $300 million deal with the Phillies but was batting just .238 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was even dropped to eighth in the batting order headed into that series against the Royals. In three games over the weekend against the Royals, Turner went 4-for-12 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs and he would eventually help lead the Phillies to the playoffs. Turner later helped pay for 'Thank You, Philly' digital billboards in the greater Philadelphia area. The documentary was produced by Higher Ground, the media company founded by former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama McCann, also known as 'The Philly Captain,' is a Philadelphia based YouTuber and was one of the fans — along with a Philly sports talk radio host — credited with rallying the fans to get behind Turner. 'During the ceremony, one of the award presenters said, 'When you go up against the Olympics, you lose.' So I kind of thought we already lost,' McCann said. 'We didn't. It was a great, great shock.'
