Transport for Wales Celebrates Eisteddfod with Newly-Named Train
The newly named Mistar Urdd train was launched in Port Talbot ahead of the Urdd's Eisteddfod in Margam Park later this month. Additionally, TfW has supported the Urdd's Fund for All .
The train was welcomed by First Minister Eluned Morgan, along with Siân Lewis, CEO of the Urdd and Ysgol Tyler'r Ynn.
The new CAF Class 197 trains have been running all over the Wales and Borders network since 2022 and are part TfW's £800 million investment into brand-new trains.
First Minister Eluned Morgan said:
'It's great to see one of our new trains named after Mr Urdd, who has a special place in the hearts of so many of us in Wales and will bring a smile to the faces of passengers.
'What better way to travel to the Urdd Eisteddfod, and so many events in Wales this summer, than aboard one of our brand new Transport for Wales trains.'
Lowri Joyce, Welsh Language Strategy Lead, said:
'Who better and more iconic than Mr Urdd, who is recognisable by almost all children in Wales. We are also pleased to be supporting the Urdd's Fund for All, to allow children from impoverished backgrounds to enjoy a holiday at one of their many camps.
'We are proud to give him a big Croeso Cynnes onto our network ahead of the Eisteddfod in Margam Park so do keep an eye out for him as he travels all over Wales.'
Siân Lewis, Chief Executive of the Urdd, added:
'Getting to the Eisteddfod in Margam by public transport will be extremely easy. A bus service will be provided between Port Talbot train station and the Maes, and further details will be on our website.
'This goes hand in hand with our commitment to running a green festival and reducing carbon emissions.'

Thanks to a bank holiday offer, you'll be able to explore Wales for less than the price of a cup of coffee. To promote it's Pay As You Go (PAYG) system, Transport for Wales (TfW) have slashed the price of train travel to just £1 one way. Given the announcement that rail fares are set to rise in England by 5.8% next year, it's welcome to those both living in, and visiting, Wales. From August 19 to August 28, the £1 tickets are available for travel at any station where passengers tap in and out. This means that 95 stations (all of which are in the southeast) across the TfW network are taking part, including all stops on the Valleys lines, as well as routes to Bridgend, Maesteg, the Vale of Glamorgan, Abergavenny, and Chepstow. This £1 per single journey promotion is exclusively available to passengers using PAYG, and excludes all other ticket types. While the savings aren't massive, they'll soon add up, especially if you're commuting around the southeast. For example, a single fare from Abergavenny to Cardiff Central usually costs £4.20, so you're saving £3.20 per day, one way. 'Since launching last year, PAYG has become our fastest selling ticketing product. Through this exclusive and time-limited summer campaign, we're offering customers the ability to travel between any of our PAYG-enabled stations for just £1 per single journey.' And, for those travellers in north Wales wondering where their cheap tickets are, cabinet secretary for transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said: 'With the introduction of PAYG across North Wales coming soon, more and more people will get the opportunity to benefit from cheaper fares.' There's a cracking cycle trail that takes you all the way to Dyserth Waterfall located right in the middle of the town of Dyserth. Here the water cascades more than 70ft from the river above into the pool below. There's a path that goes around and above the falls with stairs that take you to the top. From there you can see epic views across the Clwydian range. Prestatyn is an easy walk downhill from The Nest. You've got the train station, the high street, a retail park, and a decent mix of restaurants and pubs if you fancy a night out without having to book a taxi. The four-mile promenade is worth a stroll with an ice cream and hikers can hop on the Wales Coast Path which passes Prestatyn's Beach. Golfers can work on their swing at St Melyd Golf Course, just a stone's throw from Bishopswood, and follow it up with a meal at the onsite Paddock Lounge and Bar. The Sunday lunch is particularly highly rated. It's all close by at The Nest and that's part of the charm. You're in nature but never too far from decent food or a forgotten pint of milk. Constitution Hill rises dramatically from the coast, providing spectacular views of Aber and can be accessed by a historic train. At 778 feet, the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain. It operated via a water balance system until its electrification in 1921. This lovely funicular opened in 1896 and has been transporting visitors to the Constitution Hill summit ever since. It has also been a Grade II listed structure since November, 1987. Once you reach the top of Constitution Hill, you'll be spoiled with an epic panorama of Cardigan Bay and, on a clear day, the 26 mountain peaks spanning much of the length of Wales. You'll need to consider that this ethereal-looking peak does not have car parks, road signs, or clearly marked trails, and it's not an easy trek in these isolated uplands. In this massif and the surrounding hills, you can discover the dreamy lakes and streams that are the source of mighty rivers and enjoy uninterrupted views of the mountain ranges of Wales and Ceredigion's remote inland landscapes. Located in Ceredigion near Ponterwyd, at 2,468ft, Pumlumon Fawr is the highest point in Central Wales (Image: Portia Jones ) For a less challenging day out, the National Trust site of Hafod Estate is right on the doorstep of the property, at the end of the village. It was world famous as the centre of the 'Picturesque' movement in the 18th Century and is still today regarded as one of the finest examples of a Picturesque landscape in Europe. The estate features cascading waterfalls, gorges, woodland trails, spectacular views over the Ystwyth river, a Gothic arch in a stunning setting and a cave that ends halfway up a powerful waterfall. Nearby, you'll also find the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which is named among the best attractions in the world. The retro rail journey starts at Aberystwyth and takes you deep into the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, reaching its destination at one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Wales: Devil's Bridge.
