Transport for Wales Celebrates Eisteddfod with Newly-Named Train

Transport for Wales has named a train after the mascot of the Urdd.
The newly named Mistar Urdd train was launched in Port Talbot ahead of the Urdd's Eisteddfod in Margam Park later this month. Additionally, TfW has supported the Urdd's Fund for All .
The train was welcomed by First Minister Eluned Morgan, along with Siân Lewis, CEO of the Urdd and Ysgol Tyler'r Ynn.
The new CAF Class 197 trains have been running all over the Wales and Borders network since 2022 and are part TfW's £800 million investment into brand-new trains.
First Minister Eluned Morgan said:
'It's great to see one of our new trains named after Mr Urdd, who has a special place in the hearts of so many of us in Wales and will bring a smile to the faces of passengers.
'What better way to travel to the Urdd Eisteddfod, and so many events in Wales this summer, than aboard one of our brand new Transport for Wales trains.'
Lowri Joyce, Welsh Language Strategy Lead, said:
'Who better and more iconic than Mr Urdd, who is recognisable by almost all children in Wales. We are also pleased to be supporting the Urdd's Fund for All, to allow children from impoverished backgrounds to enjoy a holiday at one of their many camps.
'We are proud to give him a big Croeso Cynnes onto our network ahead of the Eisteddfod in Margam Park so do keep an eye out for him as he travels all over Wales.'
Siân Lewis, Chief Executive of the Urdd, added:
'Getting to the Eisteddfod in Margam by public transport will be extremely easy. A bus service will be provided between Port Talbot train station and the Maes, and further details will be on our website.
'This goes hand in hand with our commitment to running a green festival and reducing carbon emissions.'

New £1 rail ticket will let you explore 95 destinations in this European country

Thanks to a bank holiday offer, you'll be able to explore Wales for less than the price of a cup of coffee. To promote it's Pay As You Go (PAYG) system, Transport for Wales (TfW) have slashed the price of train travel to just £1 one way. Given the announcement that rail fares are set to rise in England by 5.8% next year, it's welcome to those both living in, and visiting, Wales. From August 19 to August 28, the £1 tickets are available for travel at any station where passengers tap in and out. This means that 95 stations (all of which are in the southeast) across the TfW network are taking part, including all stops on the Valleys lines, as well as routes to Bridgend, Maesteg, the Vale of Glamorgan, Abergavenny, and Chepstow. This £1 per single journey promotion is exclusively available to passengers using PAYG, and excludes all other ticket types. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. While the savings aren't massive, they'll soon add up, especially if you're commuting around the southeast. For example, a single fare from Abergavenny to Cardiff Central usually costs £4.20, so you're saving £3.20 per day, one way. If you do that journey five days a week for a month, both ways, that's a saving of £128. Alexia Course, TfW chief commercial officer said: 'Our PAYG service offers our customers the fastest, easiest and cheapest way to travel on our network, with the added flexibility of being able to tap in and tap out. 'Since launching last year, PAYG has become our fastest selling ticketing product. Through this exclusive and time-limited summer campaign, we're offering customers the ability to travel between any of our PAYG-enabled stations for just £1 per single journey.' And, for those travellers in north Wales wondering where their cheap tickets are, cabinet secretary for transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said: 'With the introduction of PAYG across North Wales coming soon, more and more people will get the opportunity to benefit from cheaper fares.' Alexia added: 'Whilst this ticketing method is currently exclusive to South Wales for the moment, we are excited to be exploring how we can roll it out across North Wales as a part of the Network North Wales project.' It's not the first big announcement from TfW this year. Back in April, it was revealed that a £1,000,000,000 'Welsh Tube' would be coming to the country, spanning a staggering 105 miles. More Trending The six core lines will connect the Welsh capital to the likes of Aberdare, Coryton, Merthyr, Tydfil, Rhymney and Treherbert. However, it's not without controversy. Metro readers shared their takes on the ambitious project, and opinion was split down the middle. While some thought it was a 'brilliant idea' others claimed that the 'rest of Wales [is] ignored yet again.' Helen Peely Jones Irving explained: 'Far more important is a train from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth so you do not have to travel to England to go from South Wales to North Wales, but as usual anywhere after Swansea does not count as Wales.' If you're a fan of rail journeys – but you like to luxe life – there are plenty of options out there for you. Metro recently boarded the luxury Pullman, for a trip back in time. While tickets for the famous train often come with a hefty price tag, this summer, you can take a ride and tuck into a three-course lunch — all for £10, as part of their Grape British Railway experience Want to romanticise your commute? One of the UK's busiest commuter trains is bringing back first class travel, with WiFi, faster internet and improved storage — but no free snacks. Okay, this train itself might not be boujee, but we reckon enjoying a mini safari from your seat is pretty A-list. If you hop on board a train at London's Liverpool St and go to Norwich, you'll be able to spot some polar bears along the way. Do you have a story to share? Luxury cabin with private sauna is like your own mountainside spa Book a stay at this bespoke countryside bolthole in Prestatyn and start planning lots of walks and adventures in north Wales Book a stay at this bespoke countryside bolthole in Prestatyn and start planning lots of walks and adventures in North Wales (Image: Sykes ) If you're craving a Welsh countryside escape without leaving behind comfort or good coffee then The Nest in Prestatyn will tick all the staycation boxes.. It's not a sprawling hotel or an overly polished spa resort – it's a single-storey luxury cabin with a private sauna ideally situated near cycle tracks, waterfalls, and the 177-mile-long Offa's Dyke trail. No wonder this Welsh property has just been shortlisted for the accommodation with the "best for walks" at the Sykes Gems 2025 Awards, the annual celebration of the UK and Ireland's most memorable and high-quality holiday homes. The awards are split into categories such as Best Farm Stays, Best for Beaches, and Best for Couples plus regional titles such as Best in North Wales and Best in Mid and South Wales. You can see Wales' regional shortlist top 10 here. Every finalist has been picked for outstanding service, stand-out style, and a thoughtful guest experience that makes you start planning your return before you've even checked out. This clean-lined, modern property sleeps three (Image: Sykes) You arrive via an electric gate that opens to a secure elevated parking area. This gives you a brilliant first glimpse of the coast before you've even unpacked your bags. You head down a sloping path to the front of the cabin and as you step through the bifold doors it's instantly clear this place is a pretty special staycation spot. This clean-lined, modern property sleeps three (one double bedroom and a sofa bed) but has a cosy vibe. Electric underfloor heating warms your feet the moment you're inside and gentle plinth lighting keeps things calm and low-lit. The open-plan living space is sleek without being stark. There's a comfy sofa bed in the centre – ideal if you've brought a little one along. Directly opposite is a smart TV and Bose ceiling speakers ready to fill the room with music or your latest binge-worthy Netflix series. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you'd need including an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge, and dishwasher. There's no faffing about here – no missing corkscrews or blunt knives. You'll have everything you need for a decent home-cooked meal. It's a snug stay (Image: Sykes) A clever little pocket door slides back to reveal the snug bedroom. The double bed has a lush Tempur mattress providing a restful slumber after a day of exploring. There's another smart TV in here for cwtchy film nights and the en suite shower room is sleek and bright with an illuminated demister mirror. The walk-in shower is powerful and, yes, the towels are fluffy. A hairdryer and iron are on hand too though you'll probably leave the ironing board well alone. You're on your holiday after all. Outside things get even better. On one side there's a private patio with outdoor furniture and a barbecue ready for those long summer evenings of sizzling steaks and sunset views. But the real highlight is at the back of the property. Hidden away behind The Nest is a traditional Finnish sauna complete with chromatherapy lighting and Bluetooth speakers so you can steam with your favourite songs. It's not just some basic, boring sauna – this is floor-to-ceiling glass surrounded by trees and birdsong. You can splash water over hot peridotite rocks and let clouds of steam roll in or add essential oils and pretend you're at a pricey mountain spa. There's even an outdoor shower for that brave post-sauna cool down. What makes The Nest shine isn't just what's in it but what's all around it. You're in Bishopswood, part of an area of outstanding natural beauty, and you're absolutely spoiled for walking routes. The Offa's Dyke trail is right on your doorstep and if you enjoy a ramble you'll love having Gop Hill and Graig Fawr within strolling distance. If you fancy a challenge Eryri National Park is just under an hour's drive away. You can chase adrenaline on the world's fastest zip line at Zip World or get out on the water for kayaking and paddleboarding in dreamy locations. There are loads of adventures nearby like hiking and outdoor swimming (Image: Portia Jones) But you don't need to trek far to find something brilliant. There's a cracking cycle trail that takes you all the way to Dyserth Waterfall located right in the middle of the town of Dyserth. Here the water cascades more than 70ft from the river above into the pool below. There's a path that goes around and above the falls with stairs that take you to the top. From there you can see epic views across the Clwydian range. Prestatyn is an easy walk downhill from The Nest. You've got the train station, the high street, a retail park, and a decent mix of restaurants and pubs if you fancy a night out without having to book a taxi. Dishes By Andrew Sheridan is worth a visit and was added to the Michelin Guide this year. The Michelin series of guides has been published since 1900 and is renowned worldwide. While Michelin stars specifically rate the quality of a restaurant's food, their guides recommend various restaurants for their excellence. For the latest restaurant reviews sign up to our food and drink newsletter here. The guide praises the "stylish" restaurant for its "relaxed atmosphere" and encourages diners to "relish the opportunity to delve into a roll-call of terrific Welsh ingredients." The menu is designed for sharing and typical plates include spicy chicken and pork wonton, Welsh beef, chimichurri and charred padron pepper, lamb kebab, pea and mint, whole skate wing, chorizo, and mussels. Prestatyn Central beach (Image: Ian Cooper/North Wales Live) If you want a beach day Prestatyn's sandy Blue Flag beach is just under two miles from the property and is part of the North Wales Cycle Trail and Offa's Dyke Path. It's super-accessible and has plenty of amenities, including parking, toilets, cafes, a play area, a leisure centre, and amusements. The four-mile promenade is worth a stroll with an ice cream and hikers can hop on the Wales Coast Path which passes Prestatyn's Beach. Golfers can work on their swing at St Melyd Golf Course, just a stone's throw from Bishopswood, and follow it up with a meal at the onsite Paddock Lounge and Bar. The Sunday lunch is particularly highly rated. It's all close by at The Nest and that's part of the charm. You're in nature but never too far from decent food or a forgotten pint of milk. The nearest shop is less than a mile away and the pub's even closer. Handy. You're not too far from Offa's Dyke Path (Image: Daily Post Wales) The Nest is designed with care and is perfectly sized for two adults and one child. It's even decorated for Christmas if you decide to swap the stress of December for a quieter, fairy-lit escape. You'll find all the basics included: wifi, smart TVs, heating, fuel, towels, the lot. There is no faffing with meters or hidden extras that tip you over your holiday budget. You can book your stay at The Nest here. While you have the option for a digital detox, if you're keen to keep up with your favourite Netflix series, the pod has WiFi, a TV projector, and a pull-down screen for a cwtchy movie night. Don't forget to bring popcorn! Despite the pod's compact size, the kitchen has plenty of amenities for whipping up a meal, including a microwave oven and hob, fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster and coffee machine. (Image: Sykes) You can then enjoy your home-cooked food in the lounge area or rustic outdoor dining space, listening to the sounds of nature. Outside is a sitting area where you can unwind with a book, or head out onto the decking to take in the epic views of the hills, valleys, and woodlands beyond. These views are a dreamy backdrop for your evening spent with a cheeky glass of wine or indulging in a dip in the opulent copper bath in a hidden private garden. Bliss. The pod is also well positioned to explore Ceredigion and the small villages and walking trails nearby. For a coastal day trip, visit lovely Aberystwyth. Here, you'll find a castle, a promenade, the National Library of Wales, the Arts Centre, more than 50 pubs, and one of Wales' oldest universities. This buzzing student town was also recently named one of the 'happiest places to live in the UK' by the Guardian and was the setting for the hit Netflix TV series Hinterland. A 19th-century railway takes you up to an incredible coastal viewpoint in Aber (Image: Portia Jones) While many come to explore Aber's sandy shores, something curious rises from the northern end of Aberystwyth promenade. This area features unique attractions that may have escaped the attention of newbie visitors. Constitution Hill rises dramatically from the coast, providing spectacular views of Aber and can be accessed by a historic train. At 778 feet, the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain. It operated via a water balance system until its electrification in 1921. This lovely funicular opened in 1896 and has been transporting visitors to the Constitution Hill summit ever since. It has also been a Grade II listed structure since November, 1987. Once you reach the top of Constitution Hill, you'll be spoiled with an epic panorama of Cardigan Bay and, on a clear day, the 26 mountain peaks spanning much of the length of Wales. There is also a cafe, family-friendly amusements, and one of the world's largest camera obscuras The carriages are hauled to the summit at a stately four miles per hour (Image: Portia Jones ) For the more adventurous, Pumlumon Fawr (the highest mountain in mid-Wales at 2,468ft) is just over 14 miles away. You'll need to consider that this ethereal-looking peak does not have car parks, road signs, or clearly marked trails, and it's not an easy trek in these isolated uplands. In this massif and the surrounding hills, you can discover the dreamy lakes and streams that are the source of mighty rivers and enjoy uninterrupted views of the mountain ranges of Wales and Ceredigion's remote inland landscapes. Located in Ceredigion near Ponterwyd, at 2,468ft, Pumlumon Fawr is the highest point in Central Wales (Image: Portia Jones ) For a less challenging day out, the National Trust site of Hafod Estate is right on the doorstep of the property, at the end of the village. It was world famous as the centre of the 'Picturesque' movement in the 18th Century and is still today regarded as one of the finest examples of a Picturesque landscape in Europe. The estate features cascading waterfalls, gorges, woodland trails, spectacular views over the Ystwyth river, a Gothic arch in a stunning setting and a cave that ends halfway up a powerful waterfall. Nearby, you'll also find the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which is named among the best attractions in the world. The retro rail journey starts at Aberystwyth and takes you deep into the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, reaching its destination at one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Wales: Devil's Bridge. It is actually three bridges built on top of each other, standing high above the rushing Mynach and Rheidol streams. More information You can book your stay at The Kites Nest here.
