Cotton prices fall after India lifts import duty

1 2 Nagpur: Rates of ginned cotton fell by Rs1,100 in two days after India lifted duty on imports until Sept 30. The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), which is offloading the processed cotton, cut prices by Rs 600 a candy (per 356kg) on Tuesday, followed by another Rs 500 cut on Wednesday. After two consecutive cuts, the rates have come down to the range of Rs55,200 to Rs56,900 a candy. CCI, which purchases cotton at the minimum support price (MSP) as part of market intervention measures when the rates are low, later sells processed candies in the open market. As the move comes amid the ongoing US tariff war, falling cotton price has left farmers worried. If the rates of processed cotton fall, farmers may fetch lower prices for raw cotton during the harvest time in October. Even a temporary dismantling of duty may impact cotton prices, admit traders. The US is sitting on a stock of 2.87million tonne and of which it plans to export nearly 2.72million tonne. Exports have just begun with 40,000 tonne cotton shipped till last week, said a source. Till August first week it has exported to Vietnam, Bangladesh, Turkey, Pakistan and Mexico. The highest exports have been to Vietnam at 25 lakh tonne. Roshan Kothari, a member of an Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) at Wani tehsil of cotton growing Yavatmal district, said if the rates fall private ginners will have to further lower raw cotton rates. "In case the govt extends import duty benefit to consignments booked or loaded in vessels before Sept 30, a major jump in imports can be expected. This would lower the local prices during harvest time in October," he said. As the rates fall, private ginners may not be able to buy raw cotton at MSP, which is fixed at Rs8,110 a quintal. Even for CCI to profit after purchasing at MSP, the rates per candy of processed cotton must be at Rs65,000, said Kothari. Vyttila Jn may get Kerala's tallest elevated highway

Kochi: Vyttila Junction may soon witness a one-of-its-kind engineering feat, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) considering the construction of an elevated highway 32 metres above ground—soaring above the Kochi Metro line. If approved, the structure would become one of the tallest elevated highways in Kerala, transforming traffic flow at the state's busiest junction. A similar model—where the elevated highway passes above the Metro Phase II (Pink) line—was first proposed at Palarivattom. The latest revised alignment report, prepared by the Highway Engineering Consultant for the Edappally–Aroor elevated highway, now recommends adopting the same model at Vyttila. A comparable proposal had earlier been explored at Edappally, where the Metro viaduct crosses above the flyover. That plan was eventually dropped, with NHAI instead opting for two underpasses near Oberon Mall and Lulu Mall to ease congestion. For Vyttila, however, officials say the elevated highway will run parallel to the existing Kundanoor flyover, rising above the Metro viaduct. The revised alignment report has been submitted to NHAI's Kochi project office and will soon be forwarded to Delhi for clearance ahead of DPR preparation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 16 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo Officials admit the construction will be technically challenging and costly, but unavoidable. "The cost of a 32-metre-high elevated highway will be substantial, but it is the only viable solution at Vyttila. We will recommend the alignment to NHAI's central office soon," an official said. The urgency stems from the traffic load on the Edappally–Vyttila–Aroor stretch of NH 66, which carries over one lakh passenger car units (PCUs) daily — the highest vehicular density in Kerala. With inspections confirming that only an elevated highway can handle the growing traffic, NHAI has prioritized this model as part of the NH 66 six-laning project. The corridor is also strategically critical. The stretch connects to the proposed Angamaly–Kundannur bypass, the Kochi–Theni National Highway and the NH link to Willingdon Island. Traffic volumes are expected to rise further with the completion of six-lane works on 23 adjoining stretches, including the Kodungallur–Edappally corridor and the Aroor–Thuravoor elevated highway, both slated for completion by late 2025.
