Sabah PAS open to supporting GRS in state polls
PETALING JAYA : Sabah PAS has signalled its willingness to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, citing confidence in chief minister Hajiji Noor's leadership.
State PAS commissioner Aliakbar Gulasan said while the party remains part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, it was open to discussions for political cooperation ahead of the polls.
Speaking to FMT, Aliakbar said PAS was ready to contest under the banner of any coalition it partners with.
'We are looking for suitable partners who share our principles,' he said.

'Honestly, I must say that Sabah under Hajiji's leadership has been excellent compared to previous chief ministers. My colleagues and I in PAS are open to supporting GRS.'
He added that PAS hopes to contest at least six out of the 73 state seats up for grabs – primarily in Muslim-majority constituencies – and emphasised that any candidate fielded must prioritise Sabah's development.
'PAS could become a kingmaker for any political partner we work with,' he said.
There are a total of 79 seats in the state assembly, six of which are filled by appointment.
PAS has never won any state assembly seat in Sabah, although Aliakbar is one of the six nominated members.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said seat allocations had yet to be finalised but confirmed that the party was exploring cooperation with local entities, including GRS.

On Sunday, PAS deputy election director Annuar Musa said PN should support GRS in the upcoming Sabah polls as Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional had already announced their own alliance.
Annuar, a former Umno secretary-general, said PN should study the option of contesting under the GRS banner, or sit out the polls altogether.
Sabah PN chairman Ronald Kiandee however criticised Annuar for his comments, saying he should have brought the matter up at the coalition's Supreme Council meeting before airing his views in public.
Kiandee said Sabah's ever-shifting political landscape made it challenging for any party, including PN, to take a firm stance on alliances.

Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the two colleges are MRSM Besut in Terengganu and MRSM Balik Pulau in Penang, with the appointment of not more than 10 male and female wardens, Bernama reported. 'We have conducted a series of interviews and we've shortlisted candidates. God willing, they will begin their duties in August. 'The standard operating procedures have also been provided and we will continue with the training,' he told reporters after opening the Bukit Gantan Umno meeting today. In April, Asyraf announced Mara's plan to appoint hostel wardens from among former police and military personnel for selected MRSMs to curb bullying. He said Mara would monitor the six-month trial period to evaluate the pros and cons of the initiative. Asyraf said today the appointment of wardens from among retired military and police personnel did not mean they would use harsh disciplinary methods. 'We are starting this initiative with clear SOPs and strong foundational guidelines so that our children receive proper supervision and attention for their development in a safe hostel environment. 'We want to reassure parents that we do not compromise when it comes to bullying, be it physical or mental,' he said. FMT previously quoted criminologist Shahul Hamid Abd Rahim as urging Mara not to grant full authority to former military and police officers appointed as hostel wardens at MRSMs. Shahul Hamid said proper supervision and clear SOPs were needed to manage students, not harsh methods, commonly used in training security forces. He said there was a real concern that these former officers might rely on a forceful approach towards students. Last month, six students from MRSM Besut were expelled for bullying a 14-year-old student. In April, seven students from an MRSM campus in Penang faced expulsion after a video showing the bullying of a fellow male student went viral.

Avoid ‘Turun Anwar' rally, civil servants told
The first 'Turun Anwar' rally held in Shah Alam on July 6 attracted about 300 participants, but the organisers say they expect as many as 300,000 to attend Saturday's event. PETALING JAYA : Civil servants have been told to avoid the 'Turun Anwar' rally in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. Chief secretary to the government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said it was inappropriate for civil servants to take part in the rally 'because the action is not in accordance with the principle of loyalty to king and country as espoused by the Rukun Negara'. 'They are civil servants, how can they (be part of the rally?) Every day, every week, we recite the pledge (of) loyalty to king and country,' Bernama quoted him as telling reporters after launching a sports carnival in Putrajaya today. Perikatan Nasional has planned the rally at Dataran Merdeka to push for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's resignation. The organisers expect up to 300,000 participants, although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300. Police were reported as saying, however, that they expect between 10,000 and 15,000 people to join the rally. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said more than 2,000 officers and personnel will be deployed to facilitate the rally and ensure the safety of all involved.

Another assembly sitting possible - Masidi

KOTA KINABALU (July 20): There is a possibility of another State Assembly sitting before its dissolution ahead of the coming state elections, said State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. Masidi made the statement when asked about the potential tabling of the Sabah Budget 2026. He explained that the State Budget must be presented by the Finance Minister either before or after the state elections to avoid any disruption in government operations, including the implementation of programmes and the payment of civil servant wages. 'If the elections are held earlier, then I think we still have time to table the budget around November. But if the assembly is dissolved later, we might be able to table it around December,' he told reporters at the sidelines of the International Business Review (IBR) ASEAN Awards here on Saturday night. When asked whether the budget would be tabled before or after the State Assembly is dissolved, Masidi said the decision rests with the Chief Minister. On the possibility of another sitting before dissolution, he added, 'The possibility is always there.' Previously, after the July 8 State Assembly sitting, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had hinted that it might be the final session for the current term. When asked by reporters if it marked the end of the legislative term, he responded it was 'more or less,' noting that all bills beneficial to the state had already been passed. Political analysts expect the dissolution of the state assembly after Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has held its congress from July 25-27. They speculate that Hajiji is likely to call for polls before National Day on August 31 or after Malaysia Day on September 16. Hajiji said that he would consult the presidents of all Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties before making any move to dissolve the Sabah State Legislative Assembly. The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year if it is not dissolved earlier. Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya said the five-year term of the assembly is calculated from the date of the first sitting of the 16th Sabah State Assembly, which was on Nov 12, 2020, making Nov 11 this year the end of the term. Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, STAR, SAPP, Usno, PCS, PHRS and LDP are members of GRS. PBS and STAR have called for GRS to contest solo in the 17th State Election.
