Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO handed over these products to Rear Admiral Sriram Amur ACNS( SSP), Naval HQ at a special ceremony held at Defence laboratory Jodhpu
The six indigenously designed products include
Gamma Radiation Aerial Surveillance System
(GRASS),
Environmental Surveillance Vehicle
(ESV), Vehicle Radiological Contamination Monitoring System (VRCMS),
Underwater Gamma Radiation Monitoring System
(UGRMS), Dirt Extractor and Cross Contamination Monitor (DECCOM) and Organ Radioactivity Detection System(ORDS).

"DRDO handed over six strategic indigenously designed and developed products against NSQR to the Indian Navy, namely Gamma Radiation Aerial Surveillance System (GRASS), Environmental Surveillance Vehicle (ESV), Vehicle Radiological Contamination Monitoring System (VRCMS), Underwater Gamma Radiation Monitoring System (UGRMS), Dirt Extractor and Cross Contamination Monitor (DECCOM) and Organ Radioactivity Detection System (ORDS)," DRDO said in a post on X.
Earlier, on June 11, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted the flight-test of indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air missile (BVRAAM) 'Astra' equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) Seeker from Su-30 Mk-I platform off the coast of Odisha.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, during the tests, two launches were carried out against high-speed unmanned aerial targets at different ranges, target aspects and launch platform conditions. In both cases, the missiles destroyed the targets with pinpoint accuracy.
During the tests, all subsystems performed as per expectations including the RF seeker which has been indigenously designed & developed by DRDO. The flawless performance of the Astra weapon system was validated through flight data captured by Range Tracking instruments deployed by Integrated Test Range, Chandipur. These successful flight tests have re-established the accuracy and reliable performance of Astra weapon system with indigenous seeker, the release emphasised.
Astra BVRAAM has a range exceeding 100 kms and is equipped with an art guidance and navigation system. In addition to various laboratories of DRDO, more than 50 public and private industries, including
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
, have contributed towards the successful realisation of the weapon system.

'Basic sciences grew, too. Indian Institute of Science was paving the way for this. Meanwhile, there was a lot of interest in spectroscopy, with Nobel laureate C V Raman's work. All this led to an increased demand for engineering education in the state,' he said. Then came privatisation of professional colleges in Karnataka. In 1946, BMS College of Engineering (BMSCE) became the first private sector initiative in engineering education in India. Soon, several others followed. 'The ecosystem for science and engineering was already set in the city with the PSUs in 1960s. At a time when other states were just beginning to set up private engineering colleges, Karnataka already had 50-60 of those. However, Karnataka did not unscrupulously increase the number of colleges and maintained it at 213, thereby ensuring quality education,' said K N Subramanya, principal of R V College of Engineering. Karnataka was one of the first states to build an umbrella university VTU that brought all technical education under one roof. While many educationists were not in favour of the affiliation system, they agreed that formation of VTU brought in standardisation and quality in technical education. Karnataka was also one of the first states to bring in a Common Entrance Test (CET) in 1994 that ensured meritocracy in admissions, setting benchmarks in engineering education. As a result of these initiatives, in the 1990s, Bengaluru emerged the cradle of IT revolution in the country. The rest, as they say, is history! Bengaluru's story in engineering education is now about keeping up with the times. S Sadagopan, the founder director at International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore, said: 'While institutes like IITs provide quality education, they have not been able to scale up student intake to the extent required. However, many colleges in Bengaluru are now providing quality education with intake as high as 1,000 for some branches. They're able to offer quality education at scale. This is Karnataka's contribution to the nation,' he observed. In addition, there are private universities offering engineering education. Colleges from other states and cities are also venturing into Bengaluru to have a piece of the pie. With artificial intelligence (AI) taking the world by storm, colleges have also undergone makeovers to keep pace. Currently, there are 133 streams available, of which at least 105 are related to computer science and its allied programmes. 'Bengaluru's evolution into India's premier engineering education hub is deeply tied to its thriving tech ecosystem, the early establishment of top-tier institutions, and close industry-academia collaboration,' said Neeti Sharma, CEO, Teamlease Digital. 'Over the past two decades, top engineering colleges in the city have consistently attracted high-quality talent from across India due to robust placement records and proximity to leading tech companies,' she further said. 'With around 12,000 IT/software firms and more than 10,000 startups, Bengaluru offers unmatched industry exposure to engineering students. The city's colleges routinely see the highest number of companies visiting for campus placements,' Sharma added. 'The packages offered are also among the highest in the country. Institutions such as IIIT Bangalore and IISc report average packages of Rs 27-28 LPA, with top offers reaching Rs 65-86 LPA,' Sharma said. According to Sharma, core engineering domains, especially semiconductors, are seeing renewed interest. 'Bengaluru is home to a vast majority of India's chip design workforce, with firms such as AMD, Qualcomm, and Intel expanding their design operations,' she said. It's not just engineering, but colleges in other streams also have mushroomed in the state. According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021-22, Bengaluru Urban district has the highest density of colleges in the country, with 1,106 institutions. In comparison, Jaipur has 703, Hyderabad 491, Pune 475 and Prayagraj 398. What Bengaluru has always lacked is an IIT, but there are now colleges in the city that can boast of education on par with the best in the country.

An analysis linking census and climate data in 29 countries between 1969 and 2012 showed that exposure to higher than average temperatures during the prenatal and early life period is associated with fewer years of schooling, especially in Southeast Asia. "A child experiencing temperatures that are two standard deviations above average is predicted to attain 1.5 fewer years of schooling than children experiencing average temperatures. High temperatures reduced high-stakes test performance in China and led to reductions in both high school graduation and college entrance rates," the report said. Very hot school days disproportionately impacted African American and Hispanic students, due to poor infrastructure conditions, accounting for roughly 5 per cent of the racial achievement gap," it added. The report noted that about half of public school districts need to update or replace multiple heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. "In the most disadvantaged municipalities in Brazil, which were also amongst those most exposed to heat risk, students lost about 1 per cent of learning per year due to rising temperatures," it said. The global report flagged that climate-induced education vulnerability is worse for marginalised populations. Of the 10 countries most affected by extreme weather events in 2019, eight were low- or lower-middle-income countries. Of the 33 countries identified as bearing extremely high climate risks for children, where nearly 1 billion people live, 29 are also considered to be fragile states. In the United States, those with low income or without a secondary school certificate are 15 per cent more likely to live in areas with the highest projected increases in childhood asthma diagnoses due to climate-driven increases in particulate air pollution. "School districts in the United States that received federal disaster recovery funds had higher proportions of students from socially vulnerable groups," the report said. The team flagged that increasingly frequent natural disasters, including floods and cyclones, have led to the deaths of students and teachers and have damaged and destroyed schools. "Following the 2013 floods in Jakarta, access to schools was disrupted, schools were used as emergency shelters and some schools closed because of damage. Among schools surveyed, 81 per cent of those with disaster management plans and a standard operating procedure for dealing with flood emergencies agreed that these were effective in times of crisis," it said.
