Lord Sebastian Coe named chair-designate for Old Trafford Regeneration project

Lord Coe, who chaired London's 2012 Olympic and Paralympic bid, has been appointed as chair-designate of the Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) for the Old Trafford Regeneration project.
The former IOC president previously chaired a task force set up by United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to look at stadium options for United amid a wider regeneration of the surrounding area.

He will now play a key part in the development of the 100,000-seater stadium, which Ratcliffe wants to be the 'Wembley of the north'.
Coe's appointment was announced at an event in Manchester city centre on Wednesday.
He said in a statement which appeared on Manchester United's website: 'Throughout my career, I've seen the difference that sports-led regeneration can make in fostering strong communities and acting as a catalyst for economic growth.
'That was certainly true of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics – and now, I believe, Greater Manchester's moment has come.
'Working with Trafford Council and the Mayor, there's huge potential to bring new homes and jobs to the area around the Manchester United stadium. And looking ahead, I see a chance to bring the FIFA Women's World Cup to a new Old Trafford Stadium in 2035. The home nations are the sole bidder, which presents a rare opportunity to bid to host the global football family.
'But this is about so much more than just a stadium. It's about listening to and working with residents to create a vibrant, inclusive district, with high quality housing, green spaces, world class leisure and education facilities, and improved transport links.
'Twenty years on from securing the Olympic and Paralympic Games for this country, I'm ready to help deliver a vision of equal scale and ambition. I can't wait to get started.'
United revealed a potential design for their new home and chief executive Omar Berrada says this is a big step forward.
'This is an exciting decade for the region, and we warmly welcome the inclusion of the Old Trafford Regeneration project at the heart of the Greater Manchester Strategy.

'We are also delighted by the appointment of Lord Coe as chair-designate of the Mayoral Development Corporation; the continuity it brings for the wider project will be a huge positive.
'In addition, Lord Coe's proven leadership and track record in delivering transformational projects will be invaluable as we work together to turn our collective vision into reality.
'In March, we announced our ambition for a new stadium and since then we have been progressing those plans.
'Today's announcement is a significant step forward in our shared vision for the revival of this area of the city that requires investment to thrive again.'

UK companies face record profit warnings amid geopolitical tensions

UK listed companies have issued a record level of warnings over geopolitical tensions as they face higher trade costs under the Trump administration. The number of profit warnings issued by public companies rose by 20 per cent to 59 in the second quarter of 2025, according to research from EY, as concerns over international affairs mounted on businesses. Government policy changes and geopolitical uncertainties were cited as a leading factor behind 46 per cent of warnings to investors, up from 4 per cent in the second quarter of 2024. EY stated this was the highest percentage recorded for companies citing geopolitical issues in more than 25 years of its reporting on profit warnings. There was a notable uplift in profit warnings after the United States threatened to impose wide-ranging tariffs on imports in April. The number of such warnings rose by 24 per cent year-on-year to 26 in April, with half of those companies blaming tariff threats and US economic disruption for their financial difficulties.

'Hard to come by' - Man Utd urged to sign £34m former Chelsea star

Manchester United have been urged to consider a move for Atletico Madrid's Conor Gallagher to beef up their options in central midfield. The Red Devils' early transfer activity has focused on improving their attacking output after a dismal season last time out under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves, while United are now close to signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. A move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson could also be in the works after United held talks with the striker's representatives. But United are looking to make signings, elsewhere, and will no doubt need further cover in central midfield following the departure of Christian Eriksen at the start of the summer. And former United midfielder Gordon Strachan reckons Ruben Amorim's side would benefit from Gallagher's talents to provide some much-needed energy in the middle of the park. 'Man Utd don't need a bit more bite, they need legs, real legs, real closing down,' he told OLBG. 'Can Conor Gallagher do that? Yes he can, he's definitely got legs, he's a good team mate. 'Has he got enough imagination? I don't know, but if you have people like that with legs in there and have imagination around them, then he'd be a good signing. 'The days of the luxury player, if you want to be a top side, are gone. So, Conor Gallagher has definitely got the legs. 'He's got the robustness. Has he got goals? Has he got that flair? These players are hard to come by. More Trending 'Would I take him compared to some of the players that I've played over the last couple of years at Man Utd? Yes, I would.' Gallagher enjoyed an impressive maiden season at Atletico after joining from Chelsea for £34million, but could find his future in a state of limbo after the signing of Thiago Almada from Botafogo. Almada's arrival means Diego Simeone's side now has four non-EU players, which exceeds the threshold of three allowed within a La Liga squad. Samuel Lino and Nahuel Molina are the other two non-EU players at Atletico, with Spanish outlet COPE reporting that one non-EU player is now expected to leave this summer. Marcus Rashford travels to Catalonia as Barcelona move appears close

Rashford posted on social media a picture of himself travelling on a private plane, and Spanish media reported that the Manchester United forward had arrived in Catalonia at around 9.30pm local time. The PA news agency understands a broad agreement is in place following talks between United and Barcelona over a season-long loan that would include an option to buy. The 27-year-old has not played for his boyhood club since being hauled off in a Europa League match away to Viktoria Plzen on December 12 and ended the season on loan at Aston Villa. Rashford is among five players to have informed United they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford, where he came through the academy and scored 138 goals in 426 first-team appearances. He has been training away from Ruben Amorim's first-team since pre-season began while seeking a fresh start elsewhere. In December, the England international admitted he was 'ready for a new challenge' and last month revealed he would like to play alongside Barcelona's teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. Barcelona sporting director Deco in May told Catalan radio station RAC1 that the club 'like' Rashford, who does not have a squad number at United having lost the 10 shirt to new signing Matheus Cunha. Cunha is one of two new signings at United this summer, with the club having also added left-back Diego Leon. Bryan Mbeumo is set to join them at Old Trafford, with the Cameroon forward in the final stages of completing his move after United finally struck a deal with Brentford worth £65million plus up to £6million in add-ons.
