
Slurry tunnel boring machines to be deployed for Bengaluru Twin Tunnel Road Project
The Special Purpose Vehicle, B-SMILE, has ruled out the alternative option of using hard rock TBMs, which are generally more suitable for boulder-heavy terrains. Although this was considered, B-SMILE ultimately preferred slurry TBMs due to Bengaluru's geological composition, which is a combination of boulders and soil.
B.S. Prahlad, director (Technical), B-SMILE, told The Hindu that hard rock TBMs had been used in a tunnel project in Mumbai, but issues were encountered there. 'So, we opted for slurry TBMs instead,' he said.
Slurry TBMs use hydraulic methods to transport the excavated material and are best suited for mixed terrain. Namma Metro has traditionally used a combination of slurry TBMs and Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBMs.
'As our terrain is mixed in nature, there's a high risk of damage to the blades of Hard Rock TBMs. In contrast, slurry TBMs use bentonite, which allows the springs or blades to adjust based on the pressure exerted on the excavator, making it ideal for Bengaluru's terrain,' Mr. Prahlad explained.
Bentonite, a type of clay, plays a crucial role in slurry TBM operations by helping regulate pressure.
The government has finalised the use of eight TBMs for the project. These will be deployed from five to six different launching shafts to begin excavation. Mr. Prahallad mentioned that the entire project tender has been issued under the Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model, which means that the winning bidders will be responsible for procuring the TBMs themselves.
When asked about the technical specifications of the TBMs, Mr. Prahlad clarified that it is up to the contractors to decide whether to purchase the machines outright or assemble them locally.
Historically, TBMs used in Bengaluru (by Namma Metro) have averaged a progress rate of 1.6 to 1.7 km per year. While similar efficiency is expected for this tunnel project, the deciding factor will be the nature of the terrain encountered during excavation.
According to Mr. Prahallad, B-SMILE has only provided the borewell survey report along with the tender documents, in compliance with guidelines from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Any further geological analysis is the responsibility of the contractors, given the BOOT model structure of the project.
'The tender clearly states that supporting documents, such as geotechnical data, are to be treated as references only. The contractors are required to conduct their own in-depth analyses,' Mr. Prahlad said.
The Detailed Project Report had originally specified that intrusive surveys would be conducted well before the tendering process. However, with the current model, the responsibility for detailed analysis now rests with the successful bidder.
B-SMILE has rolled out tenders for the 16.7 km long twin tunnel project, aimed at decongesting the city by connecting northern and southern parts.
T.J. Renukaprasad, retired professor of geology, explained that the rationale behind choosing slurry TBMs could be to seal the fracture points in the terrain. 'Bengaluru has hard rock terrain, which predominantly has peninsular gneissic rock and is also intruded by many rocks like granite and dolerite. Due to geotechnical activities, there are fractures developed in the terrain; to cement those fractures, they may be using slurry TBMs,' Mr. Renukaprasad said.
He explained that these rocks in the Bengaluru terrain are over 3,200 million years old, and some are 2,500 years old.

A.P. well-positioned to supply skilled workforce to global market, says German official
Germany is facing a major demographic challenge as an aging society, resulting in an urgent need for skilled workforce. On the other hand, India, with its youthful population and emphasis on education, holds a strategic demographic advantage, said Balasubramanian Ramani, Head of Talent Acquisition for Skilled Workforce in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Government of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Germany. Speaking to The Hindu during his recent visit to Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) to explore collaboration between Andhra Pradesh and Lower Saxony in skilling and employment, Mr. Ramani said a partnership between the two can be mutually beneficial. Mr. Ramani, who met Secretary (Skill Development and Education department) Kona Sasidhar and Advisor to the A.P. government for International Skilling Seeta Sharma said, with institutions such as ITIs, universities and vocational training centres, A.P. is well-positioned to train and supply skilled workers for global markets. The State's commitment to becoming a hub of renewable energy and quantum technologies further enhances its relevance, he said. He said that though the current focus was on the healthcare, partnership in renewable energy will also be explored actively, given that Lower Saxony leads Germany in renewable energy (offshore and onshore wind and solar). 'The idea is to attract, train and retain skilled professionals,' he said, adding that to take this forward, an invitation will be sent to A.P. government to send its delegation to Lower Saxony for a first-hand experience of its industries, training centres and political engagement. 'A concrete agreement should happen in six months,' he said. Technical sectors, metal industry and higher education and research segments will also be discussed in the days to come, he said. Language training As proficiency in German is crucial for workforce integration in Germany, he said A.P. government has expressed readiness to set up joint language academies, sending 15 trainers to Germany for language training and hosting German language interns from Germany to train local teachers. Referring to A.P.'s vision to become a quantum technology hub, Mr. Ramani said Lower Saxony has strong physics and quantum research universities and suggested cooperation in higher education mobility, research and student exchange. Speaking about broader economic cooperation, he said besides skilling, the collaboration can extend to investment and joint ventures, food processing (Lower Saxony is a major agricultural state) and ports and shipbuilding, suggesting links between Visakhapatnam and German ports.

Land acquisition initiated for new line from Ringas to Khatu Shyam temple: Ashwini Vaishnaw
Advt Advt To provide direct connectivity to the Khatu Shyam temple from Ringas in Rajasthan, a new 17-km line project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹254 crore and land acquisition has been taken up, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw said, "Ringas, which serves as the rail head for Khatu Shyam Ji temple, is presently connected to Delhi by 8 pairs of Mail/Express train services. Of these, 3 pairs of services are operating as daily service.""To provide direct connectivity to Khatu Shyam Ji, Ringas-Khatu Shyam Ji (17 km) new line project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹254 crore. An outlay of ₹43 crore has been allocated for the year of 2025-26. Moreover, Delhi to Alwar is already connected via Rewari," he said that presently, 29 pairs of trains connect Kota to Jaipur and Kota is also connected to Ringas by three pairs of regular trains."Further, 3 pairs of special trains are also being operated which cater to the needs of the Kota-Jaipur-Ringas sector," he said.
