Telangana Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy vows to stop Banakacharla Project by AP

Hans India3 days ago
Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has vowed to resist the Banakacharla project being pursued by the Andhra Pradesh government. He stated that the Central Water Commission (CWC), Godavari River Management Board, and the Polavaram Project Authority have all rejected permits for the project due to objections raised by Telangana. The Centre has halted environmental clearances in response to concerns raised by the state's irrigation department.
Reddy made the remarks while participating in a ration card distribution event in Dharmaram, Peddapalli district, alongside Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Adluri Laxman Kumar. The minister stressed that Telangana had strongly voiced its objections during a recent Chief Ministers' meeting in Delhi. He argued that the project violates the State Bifurcation Act and the 1980 Godavari River Water Distribution Agreements. Reddy also criticised Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders for making irresponsible statements despite these concerns.

If Telangana's BC reservation Bills don't get approval, BJP will be proven anti-OBC: Revanth Reddy

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday led a dharna in Delhi's Jantar Mantar, demanding the President's assent for two Bills passed by the State Assembly, to provide 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, employment, and local body elections. Mr. Reddy said if the Bills are not cleared, it will mean that the BJP is 'against Backward Castes'. The Congress leader said his government had delivered on their promise to the people by conducting the caste census and passing the Bills for 42% Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation. The Bills are awaiting Presidential assent for the last four months. Mr. Reddy accused the Centre of being indifferent to the pleas of the State government regarding the Bills. 'That is why we have decided to protest -- on the streets and in Parliament,' he said. He also said that he and his Cabinet had sought an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu but hadn't received any response. 'If the Bill is not granted assent, it will be clear that the BJP is against Backward Castes. If we are denied an appointment with the President, and if Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi refuses to answer in Parliament, we will not return to Delhi. Instead, anyone from the BJP who comes to Telangana will have to answer for this. The BJP will be wiped out in Telangana,' he added. Addressing the crowd earlier, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said he hoped Mr. Modi, who claims to be a champion of the OBCs, would hear the voices of those suffering at the hands of his government in Telangana. Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav said the Modi-led government made lofty claims of taking care of Backward communities but rarely delivered on its promises. 'Though the government claims they will count caste during the Census, we need to remain vigilant,' Mr. Yadav said. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in a post on X thanked INDIA leaders who extended support to the protest and said, 'This fight is not just for Telangana. It is a collective fight to ensure that Indians from marginalised communities have their rightful share in power and progress.'

Uttam meets Philippines Agriculture Secretary over paddy export

Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy met Philippines Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. in New Delhi on Wednesday, and the latter responded positively to the State's proposal to export paddy to the country. The first consignment of 12,000 metric tonnes (MT) of rice from Telangana was exported to Philippines in March this year. Mr. Reddy assured full cooperation and commitment in consolidating and expanding the trade ties between Telangana and the Philippines. Mr. Laurel Jr. said that Philippine's total requirement of rice and paddy might be around 2 million metric tonnes next year. He also enquired about the possibility of importing maize from TG. Mr. Reddy extended an invitation to Mr. Laurel Jr. to visit Telangana later this year, which was accepted. Civil Supplies Commissioner D.S. Chauhan suggested the State's Sona (RNR 15048) rice variety for export.

Yamuna nears warning threshold again

Once again hovering close to the warning mark, the water level in Yamuna was recorded at 204.14 m at 5 pm on Wednesday, as per the Central Water Commission. While the warming threshold is 204.5 m, the danger level stands 205.33 m. The highest flood level ever recorded is 208.66 m at the Old Railway Bridge monitoring station. The river has been rising steadily since July 30, when the water level stood around 202 m. The water levels dipped slightly on August 5, and rose again on Wednesday. According to Google's Flood Hub forecasting system, the river is expected to rise another 10–50 cm by Thursday evening. As the situation escalates, the Delhi government had last month decided to formally approach the Haryana government once again seeking control of the ITO barrage, which plays a key role in managing Yamuna's flow through the city. 'The Delhi government will formally request the Haryana government to hand over the control of the ITO barrage to bolster the city's flood management,' underlined an official statement. Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh had approved the proposal. The move follows last year's flooding crisis, when jammed gates at the ITO barrage which has been under Haryana's jurisdiction were blamed for worsening the situation. Over 25,000 people were displaced and water treatment plants were shut down. Even as the gates have since been repaired, officials said full operational control is essential for swift emergency action. The ITO barrage remains a politically sensitive site. While Delhi controls the Wazirabad barrage and Uttar Pradesh manages Okhla, the ITO barrage is with Haryana which has been a source of friction in recent years.
