As Gen Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, enter maturity, it's restructuring industries worldwide. Branded for their tech eloquence, realistic financial behaviours, and social cognisance and responsiveness, this generation has become the most dominant consumer group. However, despite their expanding economic leverage, there is one industry that's struggling to connect with them—insurance.
Many studies expose a conspicuous gap between Gen Z and those within the insurance industry. With Gen Z's acceptance rates and deep-seated cynicism, it's obvious that the conventional approach is not working. According to a 2024 study by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) featured in a recent article from Finance Yahoo, less than 21% of Gen Z adults have renters' insurance. The numbers decrease even further with other major products—only 5% have contents insurance, 24% have life insurance, and 30% have travel insurance.
This gap is not merely because of indifference. Since Gen Z individuals are evolving in an environment fraught with economic uncertainties, grappling with rising housing costs, student loan debts, and a volatile job market, insurance becomes a distant concern, a luxury they're considering getting 'someday.' Gen Z's unwillingness also came from a profound distrust of legacy financial organisations. Having matured during economic recessions and amid online half-truths, many view underwriters as multifaceted, profit-driven individuals who are difficult to deal with and even harder to trust.
There is also a prevalent opinion that insurance is something you need later, once you have a loan, start a family, or develop health problems. Until then, it's easy to depend on the mentality of 'I'll deal with it if something happens.' As a consequence, many Gen Z-ers either postpone insurance decisions or completely disregard them. Approximately two-thirds of Gen Z mention a lack of knowledge and understanding about getting insurance. Likewise, trust is a key barrier to buying one. To alter these scenarios, insurance providers must meet Gen Z where they are—online. Gen Zers are not anti-insurance—they merely can't see themselves in the way it's presently promoted or designed. With low homeownership rates, economic setbacks, and a preference for speedy, user-friendly digital solutions, they need insurance that feels relevant, accessible, manageable, and reliable.
The industry has a fundamental choice to make—continue with 'business as usual,' or advance and transform into a space that speaks directly to this generation. This is not just about transforming a brand; it's a call for an in-depth modification, one that streamlines, digitises, and, most significantly, personalises how insurance is made available.

US dollar declines as traders assess tariff outlook
TOKYO :The U.S. dollar edged lower on Monday, giving back some of its gains from last week, as markets weighed the outlook for President Donald Trump's tariff policy and its potential to constrict growth and unleash inflation. The greenback starts the week on the back foot after Trump said late on Friday that he plans to double duties on imported steel and aluminum to 50 per cent from Wednesday. The U.S. currency has been whipsawed for weeks by Trump's on-again-off-again trade war, falling when a flare up in tensions stokes worries of a potential U.S. recession. The dollar witnessed weekly tumbles of 3 per cent against major peers in the days after the April 2 "Liberation Day" tariffs and 1.9 per cent two weeks ago, when Trump threatened 50 per cent levies on Europe. Last week, the greenback got a bit of respite, rising 0.3 per cent after talks with the European Union got back on track and a U.S. trade court blocked the bulk of Trump's tariffs on the grounds that he overstepped his authority. Although an appeals court reinstated the duties a day later as it considers the case, and Trump's administration said it had other avenues to implement the levies if it loses in court, many analysts said it shows there are still checks in place on the President's power. The dollar dropped 0.3 per cent to 143.57 yen as of 0023 GMT, giving back some of its more than 1 per cent rally from last week. The euro gained 0.2 per cent to $1.1372, and sterling advanced 0.3 per cent to $1.3489. The Australian dollar added 0.3 per cent to $0.6454. The U.S. dollar index, which measures the currency against six major peers, eased 0.2 per cent to 99.214. The dollar has also been weighed down by fiscal worries in recent weeks, amid a broad "Sell America" theme that has seen dollar assets from stocks to Treasury bonds dropping. Those concerns come into particular focus this week as the Senate starts considering Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill, which will add an estimated $3.8 trillion to the federal government's $36.2 trillion in debt over the next decade. Many senators have already said the bill will need major revisions, and Trump said he welcomes changes. The fate of section 899 of the bill could be crucial, according to Barclays analysts. "S899 would give the U.S. free rein to tax companies and investors from countries deemed to have 'unfair foreign taxes' (and) could be seen as a tax on the U.S. capital account at a time when investor nervousness towards U.S. assets has grown," they said in a research report. "Actively reducing foreigners' total return on their U.S. investments would dent inflows and weigh on the dollar, all else equal," they added.

Trump, Xi likely to speak soon on minerals trade dispute, aides say
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will speak soon to iron out trade issues including a dispute over critical minerals, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday (Jun 1). Trump on Friday accused China of violating an agreement with the US to mutually roll back tariffs and trade restrictions for critical minerals. "What China is doing is they are holding back products that are essential for the industrial supply chains of India, of Europe. And that is not what a reliable partner does," Bessent said in an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation". "I am confident that when President Trump and Party Chairman Xi have a call, that this will be ironed out. But the fact that they are withholding some of the products that they agreed to release during our agreement - maybe it's a glitch in the Chinese system, maybe it's intentional. We'll see after the President speaks with the party chairman." Trump said on Friday he was sure that he would speak to Xi. China said in April that the two leaders had not had a conversation recently. Asked if a talk with Xi was on Trump's schedule, Bessent said, "I believe we'll see something very soon". White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said no specific date for the conversation has been set, but there have been discussions that the leaders will talk about last month's Geneva agreement on some tariff disputes. "President Trump, we expect, is going to have a wonderful conversation about the trade negotiations this week with President Xi. That's our expectation," Hassett said.

Bouanga's extra time strike takes LAFC into Club World Cup
Denis Bouanga scored an extra-time winner to lift Los Angeles FC to a 2-1 victory over Club America in a Club World Cup qualifying playoff match at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday. The Major League Soccer side go into Group D alongside Brazil's Flamengo, Tunisian club Esperance de Tunis and Premier League side Chelsea. The playoff was held to decide the 32nd team in the Club World Cup after Club Leon were kicked out of the tournament in March due to an ownership rule breach. The Mexican club also had their appeal rejected at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The expanded 32-team Club World Cup runs from June 14 to July 13 in the United States with prize money of $1 billion at stake.
