I'm confident but there's no room for error in Sardinia, admit Josh McErlean

McErlean led the M-Sport Ford charge in Portugal last month with an eighth-place finish to win his inter-team rivalry against more experienced team-mate Gregoire Munster.
The Kilrea man's decision not to tinker with the set-up of his car at service paid dividends as he ended the gruelling fixture 45 seconds up on the Luxembourgian.
It was the result McErlean had been craving following a disappointing end to the previous round on the Canary Islands, where an incorrect pace note contributed to a final day accident.
He is now aiming to maintain that upward trajectory in Sardinia where the abrasive gravel tracks cut through mountainous forests, meaning an inch-perfect approach is required.
'Sardinia is one of the toughest rallies on the calendar,' said the 25-year-old Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy-backed competitor. 'There's no room for error here. It is narrow, rough and can catch you out at any second but after the positive result in Portugal, I feel we are progressing in the right direction.'
Based in Olbia on the rugged northeastern coast of the Italian island, round six of the FIA World Rally Championship follows a traditional format: two loops of three stages on Friday and Saturday, followed by a slightly shorter day on Sunday that includes the Power Stage.
'You have to learn to love this rally, you can't fight it or it will bite you back,' explained McErlean who, last year, chalked up eight top-five stage times in WRC2.
'It is a test for both car and crew, that is what makes it so rewarding. To go against these guys, to match and beat them is a nice confidence boost — but you still have to stay modest and realistic.'.

Cesc Fabregas' Serie A side won the clash 3-2, but not before trying to go 12 rounds with their rivals after a stunning brawl broke out at the end of the first half. Former West Ham star Pablo Fornals was at the centre of the brawl as he exchanged blows with Máximo Perrone. The rivals were seen squaring up to one another before they got involved in a shoving match. However, he was unable to do so as Betis and Como players rushed over to intervene, before many of them also ended up in grappling matches of their own while trying to diffuse the situation. There was one unfortunately funny moment in the melee as Cucho Hernandez came flying in to try and land a punch on a rival, only to punch his own team-mate, Natan, in the face instead. Fornals avoided being sent off despite landing the first blow, with the same lack of punishment also going to Hernandez following his attempted flying punch. In the aftermath, ex-Arsenal star Hector Bellerin tried to speak to the referee to get the situation under control. The 30-year-old was guided away from the official while still protesting, before tempers between the teams flared again by the tunnel. Mercedes happy to secure Russell's future after Verstappen talks

Verstappen confirmed for the first time that he would stay with Red Bull ahead of last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, putting to an end speculation that he could make a sensational move to rivals Mercedes ahead of the 2026 season. Mercedes and Wolff have made little secret of their desire to sign the four-time world champion, which heightened talk that Russell – who is out of contract at the end of this season – could lose his seat. Team principal Wolff admitted that the possible availability of Verstappen, 27, had to be explored. 'I've always said I'm happy with my team, with Russell and Kimi Antonelli, but suddenly Max's future became uncertain, so we talked to him too,' Wolff told Gazzetta dello Sport. 'But I've always been very clear with George: 90 per cent of the time he would stay with us, but I needed to talk to Verstappen too. Now the situation is clear, and everything can go back to normal.' Verstappen had a break clause from his Red Bull deal which can no longer be activated. Confirmation that he would stay with the team came 23 days after Christian Horner discovered he had been ousted as Red Bull team principal and CEO. "I'm useless, absolutely useless" 😔 A devastated Lewis Hamilton after his Q2 exit in Hungary 🎙️ — Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) August 2, 2025 Russell claimed his sixth podium of the season at the Hungaroring and has excelled in an inconsistent Mercedes car, while also stepping up to lead the team alongside 18-year-old Italian rookie Antonelli following Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari. Hamilton, who won six of his seven world championships under Wolff at Mercedes, endured another difficult weekend for the Scuderia and labelled himself 'useless' after qualifying. The downbeat 40-year-old said Ferrari should change their driver but Wolff is convinced he will bounce back from his first-season struggles with the Prancing Horse. 'It's a characteristic of the greats: if they know they haven't been up to par, they don't blame the team but look within. Once this moment has passed, he'll come back with the same motivation as always,' Wolff said. Formula One will have a new set of regulations for next season, with major changes to power unit and aerodynamic rules that will bring an end to the ground-effect era in which Mercedes have struggled to match Red Bull and, this season, McLaren. Wolff is optimistic that his team will be stronger next season and admitted he would relish the chance to go head-to-head in a title battle with Hamilton and Ferrari. 'Seeing Ferrari against Mercedes would be fantastic,' Wolff added. 'I have no doubt this duel will happen, next year or in the future. We will experience it and it will be fantastic.'
