BBC News06-06-2025
Artists from Suffolk and around the world will explore the rich history of a former weapons development site through a series of short-term residencies. The Research Art Lab project, led by the National Trust and the University of Suffolk, will see one of Orford Ness's former military buildings turned into a temporary studio.Over the summer it will be occupied by 11 different creatives from Suffolk, London or California, each of whom will produce pieces inspired by the unusual landscape. Now owned by the National Trust as a nature reserve, Orford Ness is a vegetated shingle spit previously used by the Ministry of Defence, make weaponry during both world wars and the Cold War.
The present and past of the site will act as the stimulus for the artists, who will create everything from sculptures, paintings and films to performances and installations.During their three-week residencies they will explore and incorporate early camouflage techniques and colour palettes and contemporary botanical drawings inspired by the flora found on the shingle and marshland. And during open days at Orford Ness visitors will be able to see the process of "creative research and experimentation" in real time as it happens.Glen Pearce, property operations manager at Orford Ness, said the landscape had long "inspired artists and creatives from all walks of life"."We're really excited to see how this fascinating landscape, with its complicated history, further inspires artists and visitors this year," he said.

Most iconic TV theme tune of all time revealed… as telly addicts admit biggest bugbears when watching with others

DOOF, doof, doof, doof, do do doof... the most iconic TV theme tune of all time belongs to EastEnders, according to research. A poll of 2,000 adults found soap rival Coronation Street placed second on the list, followed by iconic sitcom Friends. 3 3 3 Rounding out the top five were The Simpsons, and Will Smith vehicle The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But Gen Z were the age group most likely to rank animation Family Guy as having their favourite theme. It also emerged, on average, Brits will watch TV with other people four times-a-week. With the top telly bugbears found to be people asking loads of questions about a show, switching between channels - and accidentally giving away spoilers. A quarter (24 per cent) who watch with others get cheesed off when their sofa-mates eat snacks too loudly. While 21 per cent find it frustrating when other people keep the volume too low. The research was commissioned by M&M'S to launch its latest platform, It's More Fun Together, turning TV quirks into something worth celebrating, with a Couch Confessions pop-up in London, hosted by TV-lover celebs Sam Thompson and Scarlett Moffatt. Reality TV star Scarlett Moffatt, said: 'TV nights at home are my love language, chaotic, full of theme-tune singalongs and subtitle debates. 'But hunkering down on the couch with Scott and Jude is what makes it so special. 'I love celebrating the little quirks that turn ordinary nights into unforgettable family moments, because watching together is always more fun, even if Jude is the remote-control-king nowadays.' A quarter of those polled confessed to being a nightmare to watch TV with, because they're always asking questions themselves. For 40 per cent of them, they're just trying to understand a plot point better - but 31 per cent admitted they simply weren't paying enough attention. The research also revealed what TV viewers would like to make watching telly collectively better - with 20 per cent opting for snack bowls that perfectly divide portions between people. And 19 per cent would like a family-sized footstool, so everyone could put their feet up, and 15 per cent long for a device that sets the TV at the 'perfect' volume. Brits also found an appetite for celebrity company in front of the box, with David Attenborough, Ant and Dec and Olivia Colman ranking top three of Britain's most sought-after telly companions. TV personality and radio host, Sam Thompson, added: 'I'm all about turning TV nights into a proper event with bean bags, onesies and volume up. 'It's my favourite time to just hang out with mates, even if it takes us an hour to agree on what to watch and someone always falls asleep halfway through.'

Final batch of rare £1 Queen Elizabeth II coins released

The Royal Mint has announced the release of the final batch of Queen Elizabeth II £1 coins into circulation across the UK. More than 23 million coins bearing the late Queen are being introduced, alongside 7.5 million new £1 coins featuring King Charles III. These 2022-dated Elizabeth II coins are set to become the rarest £1 denomination in active circulation, according to the Royal Mint. This dual release, totalling almost 31 million coins, marks a historic transition for UK coinage, symbolising the shift from Britain's longest-reigning monarch to her successor on the £1 denomination. They represent the last £1 coins featuring Queen Elizabeth II's portrait to enter public hands. Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, underscored the significance, stating: "This release represents a pivotal moment in British coinage history. 'As we release more of the King Charles III £1 coins into circulation alongside the final coins of Queen Elizabeth II, we're witnessing the physical representation of our monarchy 's transition. 'This dual release creates an exceptional opportunity for both seasoned numismatists and those new to coin collecting.' The Royal Mint is encouraging the public to check its change over the coming weeks, as the new coins begin to appear in pockets and tills across the nation. Ms Morgan added: 'Finding these new coins in your change could spark a rewarding hobby that connects you with the heritage, history and craftsmanship behind British currency.' Since the introduction of the King's effigy on UK coinage in 2023, the 50p and £1 are the only denominations with Charles's portrait to have entered circulation so far. The King's £1 coins feature an intricate bee design on the reverse and are part of the Definitive collection, inspired by the flora and fauna of the British Isles. Some 2.975 million £1s with the King's effigy were released in August last year. In total, there are around 24.7 billion coins in circulation across the UK, with the King's coins representing only around 0.004% of those, making his new coins highly desirable to collectors. All UK coins bearing the Queen's portrait will remain legal tender and in active circulation to allow a smooth transition and minimise the environmental impact and cost.
