It's New Music Friday, and the weekend brings an exciting batch of new albums to stream.
Miley Cyrus is back with her highly-conceptual, Pink Floyd-inspired visual album Something Beautiful, while The National's Matt Berninger returns for his second solo effort, Get Sunk. Plus, there's new releases from yeule, Garbage, and Mt. Joy, as well as a collaborative project between Low's Alan Sparhawk and Trampled by Turtles.

After sharing the experimental White Roses, My God last year, Low's Alan Sparhawk returns today with a collaborative album made with the folk band Trampled by Turtles. It's a fitting combination, as both acts emerged from the Duluth, Minnesota area and have shared the stage together dozens of times over the years.

Singer-songwriter Ben Kweller returns to music with Cover the Mirrors, his first project since the tragic passing of his son Dorian Zev in 2023. The new album, releasing on Dorian's 19th birthday, is a raw, emotional journey through grief and loss, with support from Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman, The Flaming Lips, and Coconut Records. Three years removed their self-titled debut album, London eight-piece band Caroline have returned with the aptly-named Caroline 2. To keep things as 'Caroline' as possible, the group recruited Caroline Polachek for lead single 'Tell me I never knew that' and included a song on the album called 'Coldplay cover' that, in fact, is not a Coldplay cover.

While Garbage are often masters at depicting darkness, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light searches for a more uplifting message. 'This record is about what it means to be alive, and about what it means to face your imminent destruction,' said the band's Shirley Manson. 'It's hopeful. It's very tender towards what it means to be a human being.' They're also supporting the album with their first headlining North American tour in seven years.

The National frontman Matt Berninger is back with his sophomore solo album Get Sunk, a rich, sorrowful exploration of the human experience. The single 'Bonnet of Pins' showcases Berninger's knack for storytelling, offering a taste of the hero's journey to the self that Berninger delivers on Get Sunk.

Coldplay's Shocking Hit Reaches New Peaks On Five Billboard Charts At Once
For the past several months, Coldplay's song 'Sparks' has been rising on charts everywhere. The tune, which was originally released decades ago as an album cut, became one of the rare largely-overlooked cuts from the past that goes viral on TikTok and finds its way to meaningful rankings as both sales and streams exploded. This week, in particular, is especially huge for 'Sparks,' as it doesn't just reach a new high point – it does so on multiple tallies published by Billboard. 'Sparks' Soars to New Highs in America 'Sparks' hits never-before-seen highs on three United States-based rankings. The track jumps to No. 7 on the Hot Rock Songs chart, No. 9 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs tally, and No. 13 on the Rock Streaming Songs roster. Coldplay collects a seventeenth career top 10 smash on the list of the most consumed rock and alternative compositions in America as 'Sparks' leaps from No. 13 to ninth place. Coldplay on the Global Charts The same cut also ascends to newly-established peaks on both of Billboard's worldwide rosters. The cut jumps from No. 86 to No. 78 on the Billboard Global 200, and it almost enters the highest half of the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. 'Sparks' could easily manage that feat in a few days, but for the moment it settles at No. 104, up 15 spaces from where it sat last frame. 'Sparks' Keeps on the Hot 100 Last week, 'Sparks' hit No. 79 on the Hot 100, and this time around, it keeps in that position, which marks its best showing on the ranking of the biggest songs in America. Even though 'Sparks' was released decades ago, it has only spent four frames on the competitive roster, two of which have been at its all-time peak. Coldplay's Surprise Hit Lives on Multiple Lists The same tune, which has still not technically been promoted as a single, can be found on both the Hot Alternative Songs and Alternative Streaming Songs charts. This frame, 'Sparks' keeps at No. 8 — its more impressive placement — on the Hot Alternative Songs roster, and it slips outside the highest tier on the Alternative Streaming Songs ranking, descending from No. 10 to No. 11 after once rising to No. 9. 'Yellow,' 'Something Just Like This' and 'A Sky Full of Stars' Coldplay fills half a dozen spaces on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S., and amazingly, 'Sparks' isn't even the group's most notable appearance, even though it reaches new highs. 'Yellow' lives inside the upper quarter of the 200-spot rankings, while 'Viva La Vida,' 'The Scientist,' 'Something Just Like This' with The Chainsmokers, and 'A Sky Full of Stars' decline on the two tallies.

Coldplay regularly lives on the Official Singles chart in the group's home country of the United Kingdom with some of its most famous songs like 'Yellow,' 'Viva La Vida,' and 'The Scientist.' In 2025, a seemingly long-forgotten cut, 'Sparks,' became a surprise win for the Grammy-winning outfit. The tune went viral on social media, and that success translated to a massive increase in both streams and sales. For several weeks now, 'Sparks' has been on the rise in the U.K., and as it jumps up the most important songs tally again, the Coldplay cut reaches a new peak position. Coldplay's 'Sparks' Hits a New High On the Official Singles chart — which uses a methodology that combines both streaming activity and sales to determine the 100 most consumed songs in the U.K. — 'Sparks' lifts from No. 39 to No. 36. The new smash makes it to that position eight weeks into its life on the competitive tally. An Immediate Top 40 Success for Coldplay 'Sparks' debuted on the Official Singles chart in late June of this year. The song immediately became another top 40 success for Coldplay when it launched at No. 40. Since then, the track has risen and fallen, but not dramatically at any point. This turn is the second in a row in which 'Sparks' has hit a new high. 'Sparks' Reaches an All-Time High on the Streaming Roster While 'Sparks' is selling better than it has in years, plays on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and other competitors is playing the main role in sending the track upward. On the Official Singles Streaming chart, 'Sparks' jumps five spots to No. 75. A month into its time on the streaming-only roster, the viral tune sets a new high point. 'Yellow' and 'Viva La Vida' Coldplay claims a trio of wins on the Official Singles chart this frame. 'Yellow' improves from No. 98 to No. 91, while 'Viva La Vida' dips two spaces from No. 97 to No. 99, and barely holds on. The Official Charts Company developed a rule several years ago that states that all musical acts can only claim three successes at one time as a lead figure. Both 'Yellow' and 'Viva La Vida' join 'Sparks' on the Official Singles Streaming chart, as does 'The Scientist.' That latter track can often be found on the Official Singles roster, but since 'Sparks' is on the rise, there's no room for 'The Scientist' this week.
