Ruturaj's appointment as CSK captain set me on cloud 9, says childhood coach Mohan Jadhav

New Delhi: India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad's childhood coach Mohan Jadhav was confident that his ward would one day lead Chennai Super Kings, but he never thought it would happen so soon.
Gaikwad, who has been part of the franchise since 2019, was named CSK skipper on the eve of the 2024 IPL season after MS Dhoni stepped down from the role. In Gaikwad's first season as captain, CSK narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2024 IPL Playoffs. The Chennai side had seven wins and losses each in their 14-game campaign, which saw them finish fifth, below Royal Challengers Bengaluru on net run rate.
Jadhav said he was on cloud nine when Gaikwad was named CSK captain — a moment that lit up his heart.
"I was definitely expecting it, but not this early because there were equally talented people already in line. But as and when CSK announced this decision, it set me on cloud nine. We felt like we are finally achieving our aims," Jadhav said on 'House of Glory' podcast.
'During his last year as his coach, I gave him the captaincy for the first time. His attitude at that time was astoundingly mature. Reflecting on that, when I see him today as CSK's captain, it really does not astonish me. He was meant for it. And I'm sure CSK was on the lookout for someone like him only,' he added.
Speaking about Gaikwad's dedication and maturity towards cricket ever since childhood, Jadhav shared the journey of how he began as a fast bowler when he joined the academy at the age of 3. However, he later shifted focus to his batting and has been a slick 360 degree-batter, now having bagged the captaincy for the 5-time IPL-winning team Chennai Super Kings.
Gaikwad's 2025 IPL season was cut short after he had taken a blow on his right forearm while trying to step down the pitch off during CSK's defeat to Rajasthan Royals (RR) on March 30.

Women's ODI World Cup: Delay In Forming LOC Raises Concern Within BCCI

Last Updated: The Women's ODI World Cup is nearing, but the BCCI hasn't formed the local organizing committee. The tournament runs from Sept 30 to Nov 2 across five venues, including Colombo. The Women's ODI World Cup is imminent, and yet the host Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to establish the local organising committee (LOC) responsible for the smooth operation of the ICC event. The LOC's formation was tabled during the BCCI Apex Council meeting in March, but a decision was deferred. Earlier this month, the ICC announced a partial schedule for the tournament, which will be played across five venues from September 30 to November 2. Colombo will serve as the neutral venue for matches involving Pakistan, as per the hybrid model agreed upon by the BCCI, PCB, and ICC for all ICC events until 2027. The BCCI's senior officials were occupied with the Indian Premier League (IPL) until 3 June, and with the Apex Council expected to meet soon, the LOC may finally be formed. 'There is no deadline per se to form the LOC but it is always better if these things are done well in advance. In countries like England and Australia, you would normally see the LOC in place a year before the event and even the schedule is out well in advance so that the fans can plan," a BCCI source was quoted as saying to PTI. 'As far as the conduct of the tournament goes, the LOC is the main body responsible for sorting out the logistics for the participating teams. Needless to say, it has a massive role to play," the source added. India will host a women's ICC event for the first time since 2016, when it last staged the T20 World Cup alongside the men's tournament. It is worth noting that there was a considerable delay in announcing the schedule for the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup hosted by India, which was finalised at the last minute owing to logistical challenges. The four Indian venues for the Women's ODI World Cup are Bengaluru, Guwahati, Vizag, and Indore. The last 50-over women's World Cup was held in India in 2013. Despite the recent equal pay initiative by the BCCI and the resources at its disposal over the past decade, the women's team is yet to win an ICC trophy. First Published: June 11, 2025, 18:36 IST

‘Was Consulted': Siddaramaiah Changes Stance On RCB Event Week After Bengaluru Stampede

Last Updated: Siddaramaiah said: "Govindraj called up the governor and handed me the phone...I told the governor that since I was attending the Vidhana Soudha event, he should too..." After distancing himself from the June 4 RCB felicitation event for days, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has now changed his stance — he said he was consulted for the Vidhan Soudha function. The Karnataka government went ahead with a felicitation ceremony for IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Vidhana Soudha on June 4, despite a clear warning from the police about potential security risks. Later that evening, a massive crowd of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for celebration of RCB's maiden trophy win in 18 years, resulting in a stampede that left 11 people dead. Siddaramaiah had earlier said his government the state administration had no role in organising the felicitation event at the stadium and that he was merely invited to the Vidhan Soudha function. 'On the 4th of this month, the KSCA and RCB representatives held a felicitation programme for the players. At around 11:29 am, I was invited. They requested to hold the programme, and I agreed. The Chief Secretary also called me about this, and I said yes." 'The governor also attended the felicitation. The media is played it out in such a way, saying that the governor came of his own volition. That's not correct." 'My political secretary Govindraj called up the governor and handed me the phone, telling that the governor too was coming. I told the governor that since I was attending, he should attend as well. He attended, and the felicitation ended in 20 minutes due to the rains. He left from there, and I headed back to my residence," said the CM. In a letter dated June 4, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) MN Karibasvanna had warned of security concerns and flagged these to the DPAR. In a letter addressed to DPAR head G Satyavathi, Vidhana Soudha security division officials flagged serious concerns about inadequate personnel to manage security arrangements for the high-profile event. WTC Final: South Africa win toss, put defending champions Australia to bat under overcast conditions at Lord's

London [UK], June 11 (ANI): South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl against the defending champions Australia under the gloomy sky of London's iconic venue, Lord's, in the World Test Championship final on Wednesday. It has been a year where jinxes have been broken across different sports. Bologna lifted the title for the first time in 51 years, while Newcastle United ended the drought after 56 years. Tottenham Hotspur lifted the Europa League for the first time in decades, and Paris Saint-Germain got their hands on the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. In cricket, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's 18-year-long wait ended after they trounced Punjab Kings to lift their first IPL trophy. South Africa, still waiting for its first ICC title since 1998, has the opportunity to trounce the defending champions Australia and end their years of agony, which saw them falter on numerous occasions in the knockout stages. They have been surrounded by criticism stemming from the number of matches they played to finish at the top of the standings and earn the right to fight for the WTC mace. On the other hand, Australia has been a dominant force en route to defending its title. They left India bamboozled in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade to qualify for the final. Josh Hazlewood is fit and running to join yet another final with hopes of maintaining his flawless streak. The Baggy Greens have been deemed the on-paper favourites to defend their title, but spirited South Africa is looking to rob them of the opportunity. After winning the toss, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said, 'Will have a bowl first looking at the overhead conditions. Too late to change the team, we have selected the best combination. All 15 of us are confident. It is a massive final, it should be a spectacle out here.' Australia skipper Pat Cummins was happy to bat and said during the time of the toss, 'Happy to bat first. Looks like a good wicket with a few clouds. Prep wise it has been unreal, 15 guys working very hard for that title. You get used to it the more you are playing, we have had about 10 days prep and we are ready. Doesn't feel like any extra pressure. WE've been here before and we've won it. This week is all about enjoying the moment.' South Africa (Playing XI): Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma(c), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne(w), Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi Australia (Playing XI): Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey(w), Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
