Positive Points Suncorp Group Ltd (SNMCY) reported a net profit after tax of $1.823 billion, supported by the sale of Suncorp Bank and New Zealand Li operations. The underlying insurance trading result increased by 20% to $1.566 billion, reflecting strong business performance. The company announced a $400 million buyback, demonstrating confidence in its financial position and commitment to returning capital to shareholders. Investment returns were significant contributors to the financial results, showcasing the resilience of investment markets and the outperformance of the manager panel. Suncorp Group Ltd (SNMCY) declared a final ordinary dividend of $0.49 per share, bringing the full-year dividend to $0.90 per share, the highest since 2008. Negative Points Natural hazard costs were $1.355 billion, although $205 million below the allowance, they remain a significant expense. The company experienced deteriorating loss ratios in both the Queensland and New South Wales CTP portfolios. Elevated fire and water claims in the home insurance segment impacted margins. The New Zealand commercial market faced competitive pressures, impacting growth. The company noted ongoing challenges with insurance affordability and the impact of natural hazard claims. Q & A Highlights Q: Can you discuss the quarterly trends in Home and Motor insurance, particularly in the third and fourth quarters? A: Steven Johnston, CEO, explained that the company maintained a disciplined approach to pricing, ensuring they stayed ahead of inflation. In Q3, they observed a moderation in inflationary factors, especially in motor insurance, which allowed them to adjust pricing and increase marketing in Q4. This led to a positive response in the portfolio, with volumes picking up and continuing into FY26. Q: How did the reinsurance renewal impact your strategy, and what are your future plans regarding reinsurance? A: Jeremy Robson, CFO, noted that the reinsurance market was bifurcated, with favorable conditions for main covers but constrained and expensive aggregate covers. The company benefited from lower costs and maintained similar risk retention. They remain open to future reinsurance opportunities if they align with their strategic framework for optimizing capital and shareholder value. Q: What is the breakdown of the 13% growth in the natural hazard allowance? A: Jeremy Robson explained that half of the increase is due to exposure and inflation, while the other half is an increase in sufficiency. The changes in reinsurance did not impact the natural hazard allowance. Q: Can you provide insights into the inflation environment and your assumptions for next year? A: Steven Johnston highlighted that motor insurance inflation is moderating due to improved supply chain and repair shop capacity. However, home insurance faces challenges with fire and water claims, driven by factors like lithium batteries and flexi pipes. Jeremy Robson added that home inflation was in the high single digits last year and is expected to decrease, while motor inflation remains in the mid-single digits. Q: How do you view potential M&A opportunities, and what areas would you prioritize? A: Steven Johnston stated that while their bias is towards organic growth, they are open to inorganic opportunities, particularly in the commercial and New Zealand sectors. They will consider opportunities that align with their strategic goals and offer potential for growth. Gold Holds Gain After Bessent Urges Fed to Slash Interest Rates
(Bloomberg) -- Gold held a small gain after traders increased bets the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month, following pressure from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Bullion rose as much as 0.6% on Thursday before paring gains to trade near $3,365 an ounce. Prices saw a modest increase in the previous session, supported by a fall in Treasury yields after Bessent suggested the Fed's benchmark rate ought to be at least 1.5 percentage points lower than it is now. Lower borrowing costs and declining yields tend to support gold, as it pays no interest. The consensus is now for a quarter-point move next month, with some betting on a larger reduction. Gold has climbed 28% this year, with the bulk of those gains occurring in the first four months. It has been supported by heightened geopolitical and trade tensions that have spurred haven demand, while central bank purchases have also underpinned its strength. Spot gold was up 0.2% to $3,363.35 an ounce at 8:14 a.m. in London, after rising 0.2% in the previous session. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was steady. Silver and platinum were little changed, while palladium edged higher. The market is still seeking official clarification over whether US imports of gold bars would be subject to tariffs, after days of confusion that prompted a spike in the premium for gold futures in New York over the spot price in London. President Donald Trump said on Monday that there would not be a levy — causing the two markets to converge — but he didn't elaborate.
