BBC News2 days ago
Following the success of Diddy on Trial, Anoushka Mutanda-Dougherty returns with a bold new series exploring the trending stories in celebrity culture - Fame Under Fire.
When scandal collides with celebrity, Fame Under Fire will be listeners' backstage pass to the truth behind the headlines, examining the stories of high-profile figures unfolding in the media – from musicians, film stars, athletes, politicians, influencers and even royalty.
In an age of AI-generated 'evidence', misinformation, and unqualified 'newsfluencers', Anoushka and expert guests will myth bust and fact check the stories lighting up social media and beyond.
Episode One will be available on Thursday 24 July on BBC Sounds. The trailer episode is out now on BBC Sounds, listen here.
Diddy on Trial topped the podcast charts and saw Anoushka report on every day of Sean 'Diddy' Combs's trial from outside the courthouse in New York.
Anoushka Mutanda-Dougherty said: 'Diddy on Trial was unique because we were in conversation with our listeners throughout the case. This was audience driven journalism from the start, but it was clear after week one at the trial that the Diddy case was just the beginning.
We got thousands of messages and requests to look into other powerful figures. We put people in the spotlight on pedestals and invest in them. So when they fall, we want the truth. In Fame Under Fire, each week we'll be investigating the stories of high-profile people who wield a different kind of, but no less influential, power in the world of pop culture.'
Rhian Roberts, Commissioner Podcasts & Formats, said: 'Anoushka is the perfect presenter to host these conversations. She brings an authentic love and knowledge of this social media driven space. Fame Under Fire will be the podcast where listeners can get the best intel on the stories dominating their feeds. It'll also give us all a bit of a moment to weigh up how important these stories are, where they come from and why we can get so caught up in them.'
Fame Under Fire will be made out of Salford by the BBC's Long Form Audio department, the team also behind Diddy on Trial and the Mangione Trial. It will be visualised on the BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sounds YouTube channel.
Clare Fordham, Editor Long Form Audio: 'I'm thrilled that Anoushka will be heading up this exciting new project from our base in Salford. The Long Form Audio team here have led the way in impactful youth-targeted visualised podcasts. Fame Under Fire will be on hand to debunk what you're hearing on social media and get to the truth of what's going on.'
Anoushka joined BBC's Long Form Audio team in Salford in 2022, where along with hosting Diddy on Trial, she also contributed to Witness History and The Global Story on BBC World Service. She began her career making documentaries for BBC Radio 4 and her programme Degrees of Love was a New York Radio Award finalist. In 2020, she produced 'Back to Uni' for BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 4, working with BBC investigative journalist Sue Mitchell (To Catch a Scorpion). She has also presented an episode of The Documentary Podcast on BBC World Service English which explored why young people are having less sex.
Episode 1 will be released on the 24 of July on BBC Sounds, BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sounds YouTube channel and wherever you get your BBC podcasts.
If you are outside the UK, it's available wherever you get your BBC podcasts.

Lauren Lyle is best known for her role as Marsali MacKimmie Fraser in Outlander, but she's returning to screens as Karen Pirie in the second season of the ITV detective series Lauren Lyle is set to grace our screens once again as Karen Pirie in the second series of the ITV detective drama. ‌ The 32-year-old actress is perhaps most recognised for her portrayal of Marsali MacKimmie Fraser in Outlander, where she stars alongside Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan. ‌ Her acting repertoire also includes roles such as Jade Antoniak in BBC's Vigil, as well as parts in Netflix's Toxic Town and The Bombing on Pan Am 103. ‌ On the theatrical front, Lauren has shone in productions of The Crucible, Wuthering Heights, Consensual and Merchant of Venice. She first made a name for herself on the West End after relocating to London at 19, which was swiftly followed by her television debut on BBC Three's BBC Comedy Feeds, in an episode titled Radges, reports the Express. Subsequent appearances included a stint in Holby City, and a starring role opposite Sean Bean in the BBC drama Broken. ‌ Her breakthrough role arrived in 2017 with Outlander, and the following year saw Lauren feature in the film adaptation of Fiona Shaw's novel Tell It to the Bees, alongside Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger. In addition to her acting career, Lauren hosts a podcast, She's A Rec, where she engages guests in discussions about their favourite albums, films, books and influential female heroes. ‌ Her portrayal of the intrepid young Scottish detective Karen Pirie earned her the accolades of Best Actress - Television and Favourite Scot on Screen at the 2023 Bafta Awards Scotland. Lauren previously opened up to The Sunday Post about her journey to stardom, recalling her move to London where she lived with four strangers and juggled various odd jobs while chasing her dream. ‌ She recounted: "I came to London to audition for drama schools and came close but didn't get in. I think I'd only been to London once before as a kid but didn't remember it." Her passion was undeniable as she expressed: "I was so hungry for it, and being around other actors in this world was so thrilling and I knew this was what I wanted to do and the place to do it." Despite having what she described as "deluded confidence" and a competitive nature, Lauren shared that she worked as a dog walker, handed out flyers, manned reception desks, and even sorted stock at Zara for months before landing transformative roles in Outlander and Broken, which both came her way within weeks of each other. ‌ Reflecting on the tough times, she said: "It was bleak at times but I loved going to the theatre and seeing this life dangled in front of me. It was quite inspiring." Away from the limelight, Lauren maintains a private life, with her social media accounts highlighting her career achievements and travel experiences. In the 2023 interview with The Sunday Post, she did share a glimpse into her personal life, confirming her relationship status and revealing that her boyfriend joined her in celebrating the Baftas. She divulged: "My parents are coming - my dad has a new velvet jacket to go with his tartan troos - as is my boyfriend, who is South-African-Australian, but we've recently discovered he has lots of Scottish heritage, so he might wear a kilt."

Scuffle breaks out on stage of Royal Opera House after performer unfurls Palestinian flag

A brief scuffle broke out at London's Royal Opera House after a performer unfurled a Palestinian flag during a show. The incident took place during a performance of Il Trovatore on Saturday. During the final night of the 11-night run of the show, a performer held up the flag on stage. In video footage, shared online, someone backstage could be seen attempting to take it off the performer. The performer grabs it back following a brief scuffle. A spokesperson for the Royal Ballet and Opera said: "The display of the flag was an unauthorised action by the artist. "It was not approved by the Royal Ballet and Opera and is a wholly inappropriate act." The reaction to the flag was mixed, with some people heard applauding and cheering, while another audience member was heard saying "oh my God". One poster on X, who claimed to have been a member of the audience, said: "Extraordinary scenes at the Royal Opera House tonight. "During the curtain call for Il Trovatore one of the background artists came on stage waving a Palestine flag. Just stood there, no bowing or shouting. Someone off stage kept trying to take it off him. Incredible." Performers show support for Palestinians A number of performers have shown support for Palestinians amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. During Glastonbury Festival, numerous acts offered messages of support during their sets, including Kneecap, Bob Vylan, Wolf Alice, and Amyl And The Sniffers. During her band's set, Wolf Alice singer Ellie Rowsell told the crowd at the Other Stage: "Whilst we have the stage for just a little bit longer, we want to express our solidarity with the people of Palestine. "No-one should ever be afraid to do that." Following their performances, both Kneecap and Bob Vylan faced investigation by Avon and Somerset Police. 2:06 Bob Vylan were widely criticised after leading on-stage chants of "death to the IDF" (Israel Defence Forces). The performance was live-streamed by the BBC, sparking a backlash against the broadcaster - which later issued an apology. The investigation into Kneecap was later dropped, with the police saying there was insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction for any offence".

Recently, Lewis opened up about his troubling 2023 Glastonbury set, in which he couldn't sing after struggling with Tourettes and anxiety from which he then took a two-year hiatus. Lewis said the performance was a wake-up call after neglecting his mental and physical health for years. He told The Sun at the time: "I think I probably knew two songs into the set at Glastonbury that I couldn't do it. "I was on stage and I was on complete autopilot. In my head I was feeling a thousand miles away and I watched it back and I feel sad. As far as I was concerned, I was done indefinitely. "I didn't take a break to just focus on getting better. I took a break because I needed a break to release the pressure value a little bit." The star ultimately made a triumphant return to music at Glastonbury 2025. In a heart-warming video posted on his social media, he revealed his true feelings surrounding the burn-out. Speaking from the heart, he told fans: "One word to describe how I'm feeling now is... spectacular." Looking back over his Glastonbury experience in 2023, he admitted: "This should be like, a really happy moment, and it isn't. "I'm like, achieving my dream here. If there was a film about being a singer, and starting as a kid, and they'd be like, Oh, I'd love to be a singer one day and perform in front people, I've done it. "I've got to the end of the film and it's not how I thought it was going to be. "And all these people are singing at me and I feel 1,000 miles away there, and I watch it back and actually feel sad. "Second song in, I was probably just thinking, this has to be it, like... I can't keep doing this to myself. "As far as I was concerned, it was like, I'm done. I didn't take a break to just focus on getting better. "I took a break because I needed a break and to sort of release the pressure valve a little bit."
