Local credit union launches home buying discount
The credit union announced Tuesday that it is offering mortgage rate discounts and waiving origination and other loan fees for those affiliated with 7 17. Different offers are being made available to 7 17 employees and also to employees of partner businesses.
Current 7 17 Credit Union employees can receive a 1% mortgage rate discount for a home purchase anywhere in Trumbull County and a 2% rate discount for a home purchased specifically in the city of Warren.
In addition, for employees buying in Warren, 7 17 Credit Union will waive fees for application, loan origination, credit report, processing and documents, appraisal, and title insurance.
7 17 Workplace Partners can also receive the same mortgage fee waivers as those buying in the city of Warren. The savings could amount to about $3,500 on the purchase of a $130,000 home.
Credit union leaders said they adopted the programs in response to recommendations from the Eastgate Council of Regional Government's Housing Study, which called on employers to play a more active role in addressing the region's housing challenges.
In May, the City of Youngstown teamed up with 717 Credit Union to tackle affordable housing. The two-pronged program offers grants and loans to qualifying homeowners up to $10,000 at a 1% interest rate for exterior improvements like painting, window replacements and siding. It also provides help for landlords of up to $50,000 to get their properties up to code.
717 says they expect the Youngstown Affordable Loan program to begin sometime this summer.

New Youngstown resident wins $300K lottery prize
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A woman from Youngstown is richer after winning the jackpot in an Ohio Lottery scratch-off game. The woman won the top prize of $300,000 on the game Special Edition Cashword. The ticket was sold in January. The winner is originally from New Jersey but moved to Youngstown with her fiancé for his job in late 2024, according to the Ohio Lottery Commission. The woman told lottery officials that her fiancé bought her five $5 scratch-offs at a gas station, and she won $15. She left to visit family in New Jersey and when she got back, she ended up spending her winnings on three more tickets at Certified Oil on North Canfield Niles Road in Austintown. 'Something told me to get three Cashwords,' she told the commission. One of the tickets was the $300,000 winner, but she thought she had only won $5,000 because she couldn't find the 10th word in the game, so she scanned the ticket and the app showed the message, 'Congratulations! You won $300,000!' The woman said she plans to use the winnings to go on vacation and treat her fiancé. After mandatory state and federal taxes totaling 28%, she will receive $216,000. Wealthy steel magnate and family killed after their plane crashed in Ohio moments after takeoff
A wealthy steel magnate and his family were the victims killed in a plane crash in Ohio — after their twin-engine aircraft went down just minutes after taking off for their vacation to Montana. James 'Jim' Weller, 67, owner of Liberty Steel Industries Inc; his wife Veronica, 68; their son John, 36; and daughter-in-law Maria, 34; were traveling to Bozeman, Montana when the Cessna they were traveling in suddenly went down, WMFJ reports. The pilot, Joseph Maxin, 63 and co-pilot, 55-year-old Timothy Blake, were also killed when the plane crash just seven minutes after taking off from Youngstown Regional Airport on Sunday. Seized cars, former police vehicles up for auction in Pa.
(WKBN) – Approximately 400 used vehicles, including former state police vehicles, will be up for auction during the Commonwealth Auction next week. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services' Bureau of Vehicle Management (BVM) announced that the auction is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday, June 17, at 10 a.m. at Manheim Keystone Pennsylvania, located at 488 Firehouse Road in Grantville. An in-person preview of vehicles begins on Saturday, June 14, and will run through Monday, June 16. Previews will take place each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grantville auction site. Vehicle offerings will include a variety of 4-wheel drive SUVs, utility vehicles, and pickup trucks, as well as front and all-wheel drive sedans and minivans. This auction will also feature numerous vehicles seized by state law enforcement agencies. Pre-registration is mandatory for the auction and must be completed on or before 4 p.m. Monday, June 16. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17. Buyers must make purchases with cash, a money order, a cashier's check or a certified check made payable to 'Cox Automotive.'
